Alright, it's been few weeks since I entered the army. I'm still at the bottom but, according to what the warrant officer(Clark) declared.....

There were three ways to secure a higher rank for yourself:

*Your training and battle performances are the most important.

*Secondly, engaging in duels & dethroning

*Thirdly, through recommendation.

He also mentioned other guidelines, which I didn't pay attention to.

Speaking of the devil, his cold stare almost caught me off guard, and his eyes were as hard as a rock, even though it was right behind his transparent goggles.

His eyes were red, pointed nose and black hair which he typically keeps slicked-back.

Slim fitted white shirt on black trousers, alongside a pair of white sneakers to complete his attire.

"Good day sir!" I bowed, before walking swiftly to avoid an eye contact. Even though I took a quick glance at him.

His facial expressions was as stern as usual but, observing people wasn't in my schedule today.

Oh yeah, time for my first duel ever!

I looked at every single freshman that were here for their first duel as I walked, brimming with supreme confidence.

During the first eight weeks, each freshman were given a chance to duel with themselves, in which they are divided into different sets per week with selected matchups wherein everyone would have their opponent to duel during the first eight weeks.

According to my estimation, we were around fifty. Which of them was my matchup?

"Oh! That's the captain's son!" A dude with a mohican exclaimed, while he pointed towards my direction.

"Is it? I don't think so". A voice retorted.

"Idiot! He is". *Another echoed.

"Yo!" A deep voice echoed. He was around 6'0"/183cm tall. And, he was also one of the top ten during the trials that took place. He had gray eyes and a 'quiff' silver hair-(hairstyle) that was quite pointy.

"Your matchup has been decided already". He uttered calmly.

"That means he is my matchup." I concluded inwardly.

"William is your opponent!" He said with a bored look.

"So William is his name huh?" I mused.

Immediately I asked the question in my mind, he corrected my blunder.

"I'm Johnny Sean, this is William your opponent!" He paved way for William who was standing behind him to emerge.

"No way!" I whispered. It was the guy with 360 waves. He he he!. Time to show him how things were done in the barracks.

"Nice to meet you!". I pointed my hand towards him for a shake.

"I won't go easy!" He said as he received my hand gently to deliver a friendly shake.

"Everyone else has finished their duels". The dude with the mohican broke the silence, then continued talking. "The fastest duel was John's. It lasted fifteen seconds".

Fifteen seconds?! That's way insane! No wonder he sounded so confident.

Everyone paved way for both of us, as they left space in the middle like it was a traditional wrestling.

"Okay, at the count of one---

Doof! That was the sound we all heard as William charged towards me.

The speed at which he used to dash towards me, breezed past the announcer's face.

In response to his attack, I used my right arm to parry his attack. "Huhn!" His nonchalant look made me even angrier.

"You didn't wait for my countdown". Said the announcer who was one of the freshmen.

"They aren't even listening to what you are saying". John said as he heaved a sigh.

"Well, weapons aren't allowed". The announcer implied further as he stepped back, after noticing talking wasn't helping the situation.

Still using my right arm to parry his attack, he forces his punch through, using it as a diversion for the main attack.

Boom! I was sent crashing with a left handed smash.

"Are you okay?" The announcer asked with slight pity.

"Yeah, he he he!" I chuckled slightly as I rubbed my face to ease the pain.

What?! Just a punch, and I'm already bleeding. It was then I realized. I wasn't his type. He was way stronger.

Pretending to be alright, I stood up instantly with a warm smile as I took my fighting stance.

As he got closer, I launched a side kick to his lower ribs but, before my legs could hit, he held my leg, leaving me standing with a leg only. And I wasn't skilled enough to use my other leg to deliver an impact like they did in martial combats or wrestling.

Countering my move, he swung my leg down, then crashes a balled fist right into my solar plexus(floating ribs).

It was so painful, that I could feel the effects in my spine as I coughed out water.

"The match is already decided". John whispered to the announcer.

"What?" The announcer asked in clarification.

"Tssch!" I muttered. "I guess I bit more than I could chew."

Almost immediately, he launched a chop towards my spine, which I escaped narrowly.

My ribs began to hurt, and my throat was exceedingly dry.

"Alright, take him down!" A familiar voice reverberated throughout the whole field.

It was Shinsui!!!

Inspired by his support and praises, I launched a kick that was aiming straight for William's skull.

*Blam!!!

"That should do it." Or so I thought.

I was happy internally after landing an attack successfully. However to my surprise, it was evenly blocked by his hands although I had already hit his radial nerve.

I quickly regained my balance, before aiming a punch at his chin.

"I got you wide open!" He uttered as he bent down swiftly. Thus, evading my attack.

"Huh? Crap!"

*Swoosh!!!

He delivered a very strong leg sweep that sent me falling.

"Foul, that's a card!" A voice echoed mockingly.

'Thud!' I fell flat in a supine manner to the ground. As William walked up to me, I tried to get up but to no avail as I was still panting heavily.

"Match over, William wins." Declared the announcer.

"Not yet!" I whispered, forcing my way up. a

Albeit, it looked like everything were in fours and twos. I was probably feeling dizzy.

"Here!" William stretched his arm so he could help me get up. If I had enough strength, I would have probably hit his hands but, that last sweep sent me falling in a prone manner which allowed me to take various damages as I fell on my back. I couldn't even move a single arm. In t even s single limb.

"Huh?! You can't even move a skeleton?" The guy with the mohican grinned as he moved closer.

"Wake up!" He screamed his lungs out, as he launched a rocket kick to my lower belly, but before it could hit, it was blocked by William's foot.

"Don't get in my way!" William muttered coldly, before delivering a knockout punch to his chin that sends him falling.

"Wooooaaaahh!!!" Everyone echoed in excitement, making it sound like the rhythmic cheers of staunch football fans when a goal had just been scored.

"It's our battle, do not interfere". He added.

Still noticing my hesitation, he left me lying on the floor as he spoke.

"Thanks for the duel!" He then walks further away from the scene.

"Damn, I can't believe I lost." I cursed inwardly.

As I was getting weaker momentarily, a voice could be heard calling my name.

It was Shinsui.

"Damn! Why did you join the army instead?" He asked in sympathy.

"Look who's asking the question". I replied with a broad smile.

"Why did you join? Instead of the air force". I asked.

He sighs slightly then speaks;

"Truly, I wanted to join the air force as a means of evading the problems in the army.

That's how every lay man would think also.

But, I realised that no matter the section I join, our lives were still on the line and besides, I was waiting for your decision. And after seeing your behavior during the practicals and hearing your decision, I too had decided that I have a lot to render unto the army with my brain and my mind." He beats his chest as he concluded for emphasis.

"He he he!" I chuckled, straining my eyes to have a clearer view of him.

"Well I on my own parr, just decided that I'm in control of my life. I just want to thread through the path of becoming the strongest militant ever. And no matter what I find myself doing, I would always aim to be the best. Whether as a hero or villain". I said passionately.

After my lame speech, I looked at the fiery furnace of passion burning in his eyes as my eyes got dimmer. I don't seem to understand what he sees in me. What's so special in the trash I just said, that he already sees me as his motivator?

"What a small world!" I whispered as my eyes closed finally.

"Hey! Oi! Hey!" He shook me from one side to the other, then he stopped for a moment, leaning in slightly further to listen to my heartbeat.

"Phew! He's still alive but, he's unconscious". Shinsui had a relieved expression on his face, after knowing that I was only unconscious, not dead.

"We'll see this through!" He muttered with a thin smile.

That was the first time I battled him, and the result remained the same during the eighth duel. The only difference was that, I didn't pass out. I was only lying (supine) on my back due to injuries and exhaustion.

I held my face with my hand as I let out a cold hysterical? laughter that caught everyone's attention. I looked at everyone's faces with a grin one after the other.

"Over here Bro". Shinsui stretched his hands towards me, few minutes after the place had been cleared.
