Zach was bedridden in a big and modern hospital from France, actually it was only one more time for him as he already went to hospitals countless times and in several different countries.
He went through so many things and each one of them could have killed a regular human. But for Zach he survived all of this though he didn't escape it unscathed, as he lost one of his arm as a result.
One time he fell from his appartement which was on the fifth floor, another time he got in a car accident, there was a time he got an heart attack causing him brain lesions and leaving him with some light permanent sequels, the time he got stabbed next to his heart and got saved at death's door and for how he lost his arm it was because he was bitten by a poisonous snake and his left arm had necrosed because of the snake's poison and was amputed to prevent more complications. He underwent all of this and more, he was merely 28.
Most of the humans that would have gone through that would have secluded themselves, gone crazy or would have simply killed themselves. But Zach kept his sanity and lived his "normal" life with death around the corner waiting for him at every second.
He worked as a programmer although it became harder after he lost his arm but he managed to continue. He got some days off to go on a trip to France and as unlucky as he was he happened to reach it when a storm was raging.
The day before yesterday, one more time death was waiting for him as he got struck by lightning, to everyone surprise he survived it. He was now in his hospital bed alone thinking about his life and wondered why death was next to him from his birth to now.
'That's very strange even if I could be considered as the unluckiest man in the universe that's a bit much as I nearly died more than 50 times and never done something to endanger my life. Or could I be considered as one of the luckiest as I survived all of this ?' he pondered, in fact at the level it was, his bad luck could be considered a curse.
Zach was alone in this world, his parents died when he was 6 and they were the last relatives he had, he never kept any friend as once they remarked that he was a magnet to danger they distanced themselves from him.
He was alone in his hospital room, lost in his thoughts 'For how long I can continue to make it out alive ?'
Even if Zach was neither worried about dying nor fearing to live his life like he wanted to, he knew that sooner or later there will be a time when he would not make it out alive.
In fact he was utterly surprised that his time had not come sooner and he was surprised that he could still use his body almost like a regular man if we don't account for his missing arm.
With this in head, exhausted, he gradually shut his eyes and fell in a deep sleep. 12 hours later he wakes up and notice that he got new bandages 'Damn I must have been dead beat for not noticing someone changing my bandages' 'How long did I slept ?'. Zach turned his head to look on the clock that was hung above the door.
"What !?" he exclaimed "I slept for a whole 12 hours !" it is important to know that Zach never needed much sleep to recover his energy, usually only 6 hours would suffice and even when he was very tired he never slept more than 8 hours and a half.
After so much sleep Zach was feeling little dehydrated and was starving so he pressed the button to call a nurse, 3 minutes later a nurse came and asked.
"How are you ? Do you need something in particular ?" she gently said
"I am fine nothing out of the ordinary for me, I would like some water and a meal please."
"Sure I will come back with that in a few minutes" she said while smiling to Zach.
Ten minutes later the nurse came back with a plate of beef meat and green beans in addition she brought him a water bottle and there was also a chocolate bar, actually she bought the bar with her money as she took pity for him and wanted to bring him some happiness even if it was not much.
"There, what you asked me. Do you need my help for something else ?" She asked while putting the plate on the table next to his bed.
"Thank you, I would like to know when could I be discharged from the hospital ?" he inquired while picking the water bottle.
"I don't know, I will go seek the doctor, he will come to examine you and you could ask him directly." She replied kindly
"Ok, thank you" Zach said before starting to dig into his meal.
After finishing his meal, Zach grabbed the book that he somehow managed to keep with him, he started reading it, it was a fantasy story about a hero in a world of swords and magic who needed to slain the dragon king that threatened the kingdom.
While he was reading Zach sighed and mumbled "I wish I could be in a world like this, in this kind of world my injuries could be healed and my issue with the death could resolved. But I would not be like that shitty hero I prefer do whatever I want while staying true to myself."
Zach was still reading and waiting for the doctor to come and auscultate him when out of the blue he got the most powerful headache he ever had, he threw up and started to see everything double.
Zach knew, he knew what was happening to him because once he remarked that he got near death more than every single one human on this earth, he got a good understanding of what could kill him.
'Fuck ! I have a ruptured aneurysm !' He was already feeling death, but this time this feeling was more powerful so he understood ; 'Finally, here I am, after dodging death for so long I will die and this time I am sure of it, I won't get out of it' that was one of the last thoughs he had as he was slowly passing out.
He already fainted but he felt like he was floating with his mind relaxed, he had no thoughs, he was just enjoying this feeling that intoxicated him.
Life was slowly seeping out of him and eventually Zach who fell from his bed and was lying on the floor in his own vomit, due to his bad luck, it was his end, he died in this hospital after avoiding death for so long. The question that should be posed : Was it really a matter of luck ? Was it really his end ?
