Chapter 6 - Making some changes

That Night Tara had a dream after going around for the rest of the day with a new feeling in her heart She had stunned her father and everyone else in his study room when she said she was going to keep his business. Although he had just shouted at her she could tell he was happy with her decision because that finally meant his Business would not go to his brother. He even had to apologize to Anthony and his son so they don't feel embarrassed after the whole incident. How was he to know that his daughter will finally show up today? He promised in his heart fo teach her everything she would need to know

Every other member of the family began to feel the change instantly. Tara was expecting to remember every single event that would happen to her but it was not the case. Only a few events came to mind and she made sure to show changed evidence of a strong person in every event. For instance the case of her wedding dress. She looked at it and realized she could not have been the one who picked such a dress, it was not totally to her liking.

"Your husband-to-be insisted that you should were it. He said that is how all brides are dressed in the Blacwaters family" Her mother informed her on seeing the puzzled look on her face when they brought the dress to her. Only her mother at this stage was making effort to understand her as she made sure to explain many things to her again.

"And we agreed to this? She asked looking at her mother in disbelief wondering if it were not the case that her family was also weak.

" We agreed because you agreed. You didn't want any trouble to remember? Her mother replied wondering how bad her memory loss was.

" I won't be wearing that. We should return it immediately, it should be returned by whoever brought it " Tara replied stubbornly.

Her mother wasted no time arguing with her. As she neatly packaged the wedding gown and sent it back.

"Do we have any other options? Tara asked

" Yes, I have asked your friend Sharon to bring them. You spent sleepless nights with her to pick a dress, hence it was shocking to me when you agreed to wear the one suggested by the Blackwaters her mother replied.

" You left your friend bitter hence she has personally declined to help you again in your preparations. Have you not noticed I am the only one around you? You have made so many decisions for the sake of your husband-to-be that have offended many people but I am glad you are gradually making amends.

Tara smiled when she heard those words. Yes, that is what she has come to do. To make amends. But it was going to be a process. A day at a time. She was thinking of the many changes she was hoping to make to ensure people see her in a different light when a phone began to ring. Her mother had to bring her attention to it.

"Your phone has been ringing," She said tapping Tara on the shoulders.

From when she woke up that morning it was the first call she was receiving. That felt strange, anyone getting married ought to be receiving a lot of calls and getting messages of congratulations.

One glance goes the phone and she knew who it was. The husband is to be Lakan. For the first time since she decided to be different she was nervous. The fact the marriage was tomorrow was still a source of concern that she has been trying to hide. How will she deal with Lakan when they eventually get married?

"You should pick up the call, he probably must have been informed that you rejected the wedding dress" her mother pointed out.

Tara stared at the phone nervously. It was clear the fear for him was still there. Her hands were trembling as she made to pick up the phone but her mother held her trembling hand.

"You can decide not to pick the call you know, we can just allow it to ring. when he gets tired he would stop calling " she suggested trying to encourage her with a smile.

"Don't worry mum. I came back for moments like this " she assured her mother as she picked up the call wondering what his voice would sound like. She made an extra effort to put the phone on speaker so her mother would hear.

"Why have you not been picking up my calls" came a harsh voice from the other end of the phone immediately after she picked up the call. It was what she expected.

"That is not a way to speak to a lady who is to become your wife " she replied

"What did you just say? Lakan asked her getting angry from the other end. She had never spoken to him like that.

" You heard me correctly, I won't be repeating myself " She replied as she wondered in her head where those words were coming from. She could even see the look of surprise on the face of her mother.

There was a brief silence on the other end of the phone and Tara could tell that Lakan was also stunned by her outburst.

"Why did you return the wedding dress? He asked finally

" I have had time to rethink the whole situation. If your family has a particular dress their brides wear then it should be given to hour sisters and not imposed on other families. I have decided to wear a dress that I will pick myself. I expect as my future husband you will respect my choice of things and not impose your own on me. Thank you very much we will see ourselves tomorrow at the wedding " she said ending the call immediately not waiting for him to respond. If she was going to ensure he didn't bully her when they get married she was going to start showing him now that she was changed.

Her mother couldn't help herself as she clapped for her beaming with tears in her eyes. Tears of joy that her daughter was standing up for herself.

It was those thoughts that filled her head when she made to sleep that night. But the dream she had that night was one she never expected
