Chapter 18 - 18

He shook his father's hand.

David looked startled at the nickname. "You know me?" He questioned, narrowing his eyes suspiciously.

Will laughed. He couldn't help it. "Yes, of course. You know every single movie I've ever seen, you practically own Star Wars."

Now it was his turn to be surprised. His dad didn't know a lot of movies and he definitely didn't own any Star Wars movies. At least not anymore. But David had always been obsessed with them.

Davey chuckled. "Ah, that must be the reason."

"Anyway," Will said, changing the subject. "Thank you for taking care of things here. I appreciate this."

David shrugged casually. "Oh, no problem. We wouldn't have left otherwise."

The older guy stepped forward. "We are Will's sons." He extended his hand. "Mike."

"And I'm Ray," the younger one interjected before Will could.

When Will ignored his hand, Mike put it back in his pocket, smiling apologetically. "Sorry about that."

For a while they exchanged small talk. Apparently Will's family was from Los Angeles and his parents worked as lawyers for a big law firm. They seemed nice enough. They had offered to help Will, but he declined their offer. He'd rather have his own doctor. But now that he actually had a doctor, he wanted to keep him close at hand.

He had expected a lecture about being responsible and living up to expectations like his parents had, but all they did was sit on his bed and talked. At first it was awkward and stiff and he got the impression that they were both avoiding eye contact with each other. After awhile however, they managed to relax around each other. And slowly Will found himself relaxing too.

At some point, his father brought up another topic entirely, one that confused him immensely. He was pretty sure that none of the other three members of this strange group had ever met his father. He seemed familiar though. He was probably famous or something. Maybe he was the president or something. That made Will wonder, why was his father suddenly so interested in helping him? He hadn't been able to explain the whole situation to anyone, except for David and Mary, so the best thing he could really think of was that they all grew up in the same neighborhood in L.A. or somewhere along the way they had known one another. Maybe his father knew them all or something.

As he pondered all these questions, Davey got up and moved to stand next to his desk. There were papers scattered everywhere, with some of them lying haphazardly over the surface. One was open and had a picture frame sitting on the page. His dad stared blankly at the picture for a second and then looked back at Will.

"This was my wife, Jane. She was my best friend, you know."

Jane, Will remembered. He had read about her on Facebook. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen and apparently his father had loved her for years. Will frowned and turned his attention away from the photo. His mom wasn't even worth thinking about. What would he even tell the cops anyway? That his dad and a couple of strangers saved him and took him to their house? Who would they believe? They didn't live far away so it was possible that he had only dreamed it all.

"You're married?" He asked, not really expecting an answer.

"Yeah, actually."

He frowned. He knew that his father had a girlfriend. In fact he was pretty sure his father had been cheating on her for quite a long time. But seeing a picture of her in front of him, Will doubted it. The guy who looked a bit like him was wearing black shorts, white t-shirt, and a cap, showing off his shaved head. He looked like a nerd. His hair was slightly curly and messy and his face looked kinda sad.

He didn't look happy at all
