Matthew was the first to wake up, he dreaded today, he liked practicing but it was Thursday, and it was 5:30 in the morning. "Argh, I don't want to get up." He complained while stretching on his bed. "Why did I have to wake up so damn early?" He questioned himself while getting up and stretching out his body. He walked out of his room and into the bathroom. Matthew didn't have the privilege of having a bathroom in his room like Evelyn did. He was a guy, and his mom could care less if he wanted to walk around the house in his boxers. Matthew brushed his teeth and washed his face. He got out of the bathroom only to bump into his best friend who was also wearing only boxers.
"I'm tired…" Alexander commented as he walked into the bathroom.
"Join the club…" Matthew replied with a yawn as he walked back into his room while scratching the side of his thigh. He lazily put on his practice uniform and threw random clothes into his duffel bag. Once he had finished, he turned his attention towards the alarm clock, it was 6:08, practice didn't start until seven. He let himself fall back onto the bed with a soft thump. Fifteen more minutes of sleep will do no one any harm…"
Alexander got out of the bathroom; he walked back into the guest room only to do exactly the same routine as Matthew. He looked at the time and threw himself on the bed, "Five more minutes…"
It was around 6:30. Evelyn was dressed and ready. Waiting for the guys to come down and eat some breakfast. "Mmh that's odd, usually the guys are down here before me." She furrowed her eyebrows and walked back upstairs, she knocked a couple of times on Alexander's door, no answer. "Alexander, hey are you okay?" Evelyn called out, still no answer. She slowly opened the door and peeked in, only to find her boyfriend still sleeping. "Seriously? Alexander come on, have you seen the time?" She sat down next to his sleeping body and shook him gently. "Wake up baby or you're going to be late." Alexander slowly opened his eyes, he looked in pain, which concerned Evelyn a lot. "Baby what's the matter?"
"I… I don't feel so good. It's freezing in here." He said while his entire body shivered. Evelyn placed her hand to his forehead and felt the heat.
"Oh God, Alexander you're burning up!" She stood up and walked towards the closet, on the top railing was the First Aid Kit. "Uhm, what should I do? What should I give him?" She asked herself. Sitting on the bed and searching through the kit. Evelyn took out a cold pack, wrapping it with some gauze; she popped it and placed it on Alexander's forehead. "Where's Matthew? Baby I'll be right back." Alexander just nodded; his eyes being shut the whole time; Evelyn placed the blanket over him before she left the room. "Matthew…" She called out knocking on the door, when she heard no answer, she walked in, only to find her brother in the same situation as her boyfriend. "Oh brother, don't tell me you're sick too." She walked over to his bed and felt his forehead. He was also burning up. "That answers my question. What am I going to do? I have no idea how to take care of two sick guys." She walked over to Matthew's closet and grabbed the First Aid Kit. In every room their mother had placed one just in case of an emergency. Evelyn wrapped her brother up with his blanket and placed a gauze covered cold-pack on his forehead. "See this is what happens when you guys are out late at night." Evelyn commented as she walked out of the room, grabbing the phone from the hallway and dialing Alexander's home phone number.
"Hello?" A female's voice answered, sounding still sleepy.
"Auntie Jane, sorry to wake you up, it's Evelyn." Evelyn apologized as she checked the time; it was 6:57, meaning she was going to be late for morning practice.
"It's ok Ev; I was already getting up…" she yawned. "Ngh, what's wrong honey?"
"Auntie Jane, your boys are sick, they both have really high fevers. I was wondering if you could take care of them since I'm already running late for practice." Evelyn said.
"Of course, Ev, you get to school; I'll be there in a few."
"Thanks Auntie Jane, I'll leave the key under the usual pot." With an 'ok' from Alexander's mom, Evelyn hung up the phone. She walked back into Matthew's room to get his car keys. "Matthew I'm going to school; Auntie Jane will get here shortly to take care of you and Alexander." Matthew only groaned in response. She walked out and into Alexander's room. "Baby I'm leaving for school; your mom is coming over soon." She gave him a kiss on the cheek and walked out; grabbing her bags she left the house and drove to school.
Evelyn arrived at school at 7:20 and walked directly towards the field, spotting the boy's coach. She walked to him, explaining to him how his lead players had a high fever. The coach understood the situation and just hoped they both would get better for the competition on Saturday.
"Evelyn, you're late." Kristine stated as she saw her friend reaching the team. "What's wrong? You look awful."
"I feel worse than I look. Matthew and Alexander both decided to choose today to get sick. I know they're best friends, but do they really have to do everything together?" Evelyn flop her things down on the grass. "I need to go for a run." She said while pulling her hair up into a ponytail, a golden small object shining while she did so. Kristine took notice of it but decided to leave it for after practice.
"Be my guest." Kris pointed to the field and Evelyn took off. 'Was that a ring?' Kristine thought to herself as she saw her friend increasing her pace little by little. She let it pass and returned to her own training.
"You're so small yet you run so fast."
"Hey Dean… uhm it's not that I'm small, you're just too big. How tall are you 5'8 – 6'0?" Evelyn continued running without decreasing her pace, Dean running beside her having no trouble keeping up.
"About." He shrugged with a playful smirk, his icy blue eyes looking right into hers. Once again, those eyes have some weird effect on her. "Are you ok?" Dean asked. Evelyn rapidly blinked a couple of times.
"Yes, I'm fine." Evelyn turned her sight in front of her paying much more attention to where she was going than the guy beside her.
"So, what happened between you and Khinbert yesterday? I saw that fight you two were having. I found it strange how he suddenly hissed at you." Dean wanted to grab her attention and he knew that subject would most definitely do the trick.
"Oh, it was nothing we worked it out last night at my place. It was just a misunderstanding."
"He was at your place?" Dean confusedly questioned.
"Yes, he's been staying over since Tuesday. My mom is out of town so she asked Alexander if he could stay over. She knows how responsible and mature Alex is, so she trusts that with him around Matthew will not be able to throw any parties." Evelyn smiled as she recalled last night's events and realized that she hadn't taken the ring off. Her smile widened, not caring if people were to see the ring and which finger it was on.
'What's with that smile? Damn it, Khinbert is always by her side, even at home! Shit… it doesn't matter, Evelyn McNealy you will be mine!' Dean looked at her smile and wished for it to someday be directed at him. "Evee hey I…" but before he could say more, one of the twins interrupted.
"Evee come here, you wouldn't believe what happened!" Evelyn turned to look at her friend who was yelling from across the field.
"Dean I got to go. We'll talk later." He replied with a 'yeah' and waved her bye as she ran towards the twin.
"I just wanted to know if you liked the presents…" He whispered to himself. 'This is going to be harder than I thought, but I won't give up."
Dean Lyons is a junior at Remington High School and if you have not notice he is also Evelyn's Secret Admirer. He has light brown wavy hair, tan skin, and icy blue color eyes; he is 5'9 in height. Dean is the captain of the Soccer Team and is also popular with the girls due to his playful smile and icy blue eyes. He has had an enormous crush on Evelyn since they entered High School but because of her brother and his best friend he wasn't able to get anywhere close to her, that is until now. Dean was determined to win her over no matter what he would have to do in the way.
"Hey Nat, what's up?" Evelyn questioned once she had reached her friend.
"First of all, since when have you and Dean Lyons been friends?" Natasha asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Uhm, since yesterday I guess…"
"Well, whatever… hey where are Matt and Alex?" She questioned looking around the field.
"They're both home with a fever." Evelyn said while stretching down, touching her shoes with the tip of her fingers. When she bent down her ring shone and Natasha noticed it but just like her sister, decided to leave the subject for another time. "Is that what you were so excited about?" Evelyn questioned as she flopped down on the grass to continue her stretching exercise.
"Oh, right about that… Evee I'm so happy! I can't believe it happened!" Nat was too excited this morning. Evelyn looked up at her with a raised eyebrow and confusion written all over her face.
"Ok Nat, do me a favor and rewind. You lost me at 'oh right.' Mind explaining to me in words that I can understand. What happened?" Evelyn had stopped her stretching and was now staring at her friend. Natasha took a deep breath and sat in front of Evelyn.
"Caleb Wilson asked me out yesterday!" Natasha had a huge smile across her face. Evelyn on the other hand had her mouth wide open.
"What… when, where how… where?"
"You said 'where' twice…"
"Yeah, well I want to know details." Evelyn simply said while shrugging her shoulders. Natasha giggled, remembering clearly how it happened.
"Last night when I was heading back home from The Jefferson's, the car wouldn't start and you know me, I know nothing of mechanics. Caleb was jogging by and asked if anything was wrong, he knew nothing of mechanics but offered for his dad to give it a look. Mr. Wilson got it to start; it turned out it was just a loose cable or something like that anyways that's not the point. When his dad left Caleb asked me if I could stay a little longer, I did duh. First, he asked me about sports, how I was doing and all. After some time, he noticed it was getting late, he started kicking around a few pebbles from the ground and playing with his jacket's zipper, I only looked at him wondering what was going on in his mind. Then out of nowhere he threw the bomb at me asking me flat out if I wanted to be his girlfriend. He confessed that he had liked me for a long time, but he was too shy. He thought that if he were to ask me out, I would reject him, but yesterday when he saw Kris and Jona together, he felt the confidence he needed. Caleb also said something about you and Alex having a huge fight, but you'll tell me about that later, right?" Natasha caught her breath as she had spout all that in one go. Evelyn nodded her head while she and Nat walked towards Kris who was waiting for them so they could go into the girl's locker room.
Evelyn and the twins left the locker room, not mentally ready for another school day. The three walked towards Evelyn's locker and just like yesterday morning a pink rose was taped to it with a note attached. Evelyn groaned at the sight of it, pulling it from her locker she handed it to Natasha. "I don't feel like reading whatever is written inside." She took a couple of books from her backpack and replaced them with others from her locker.
"You got a gift from him? Oh my gosh, don't tell me it's the ring you're wearing?!" Nat questioned handing the note to Kristine.
"Yes, I got a gift from him. No, it's not this ring!" Evelyn replied as she flopped down to the floor, all of a sudden feeling exhausted. The twins each sat on either side of her, Kristine on the right and Natasha on the left. Nat grabbed Evelyn's left hand and placed it flat on hers.
"Then who is this ring from?" Natasha questioned in a more serious tone. Evelyn looked up at the ceiling and took a deep breath.
"It's from my mystery guy." The twins looked at their friend with a smile.
"Meaning Alex." Kristine said in a light squeal. Evelyn turned her sight to Kris with confusion written on her face.
"How did you…"
"We've known for quite some time now, probably the entire school knows about it. You two didn't make such a good job in hiding it." She paused. "Mmh, maybe you did, nobody knows how long you two have been a couple, we just know that you are together." Natasha spoke this time making Evelyn turn to her.
"We've been together for almost four years… uhm the day of their Senior Prom will be our fourth-year anniversary." Evelyn said while she played with the small golden ring with a medium size diamond. It probably didn't cost Alexander much, but the prize didn't matter to her. He could have bought her a ring from those .25 cents machines, and she still would have loved it. "I'm sorry girls."
"For what?" The twins asked in unison.
"For not telling you two about me and Alex. You girls are my best friends, yet I hid something so important from the both of you."
"Aahw don't worry about it." Natasha said as she hugged her friend.
"That's right it was something personal and we understand." Kristine added as she too hugged Evelyn.
"Aahw, I love you girls." Evelyn returned the hug, making it a group hug.
"Look at that, isn't it sweet? We wouldn't mind joining in, right Caleb?" Jona commented while elbowing his younger classman.
"Is there any room for us in there?" Caleb added with a small smile on his face. The three girls looked up at the two guys standing in front of them and giggled. The girls stood up with the help of the guys. When Jona helped Evelyn off the floor, he noticed the ring on her left hand.
"Wow Evelyn, who's that promise ring from?" He asked as he placed his arm over Kristine's shoulder.
"Alexander." Evelyn responded while mildly blushing, with a cute smile on her face.
"The rumors were true, you two are together!" Caleb nearly yelled, causing the girls to laugh at his reaction. Evelyn nodded. "Since when?" Caleb questioned, he's in the same track team as Matthew and Alexander, but he's a junior.
"You guys wouldn't believe me." Evelyn said with a smile. She thought that telling people about her relationship with Alex would have been more difficult, but the truth was it was pretty easy.
"Try us." Jona stated, speaking for both him and Caleb.
"Around four years."
"Are you serious?" Caleb questioned his and Jona's mouth wide open. The girls laughed at their face expression.
"She's serious. Not only are they dating, but they're also engaged now." Natasha said pointing at the ring.
"Damn that's a lot; I actually thought that you and Alex barely started dating around last year or the year before, but four years. I'm seriously impressed." Jona said with a raised eyebrow, he was genuinely impressed.
"I also thought that they had barely started dating last year." Caleb commented.
"Mmh so it was last year when I let my guard down. Nice going Evelyn." Evelyn sarcastically said to herself. The group laughed. She saw the twins with their boyfriends and for once she felt lonely at school, usually when the twins weren't around Matthew and Alexander were with her and vice-versa, but today the guys weren't at school and the twins each had their boyfriends. "Kris, can I borrow your cell-phone?"
"Yeah." Kris took out her phone from her jeans back pocket and handed it to her.
"Thanks, is it ok if I give it to you first period?" Evelyn questioned as she took the phone.
"Sure."
"Thanks, see you in a bit." She grabbed her backpack and walked out towards the field. The twins stared at their friend with raised eyebrows.
"Alex." They said in unison to one another.
