Chapter 51 (Andrew's POV)
I am embarrassed to say this but I was not fast enough to push Vicky out of harm's way.
Unluckily Jessy was close enough to jump in front of her.
I could only watch in horror when she fell to the floor at the same time as Knox jumped on Nik.
He got him under control in seconds and handcuffed him to the nearest possible place.
Which was really cliche because he found heating pipes. Hardy ha ha.
He was in seconds by Jessy and was looking for the wound.
Now don't you get all panicky on me ok?
Luckily we found the wound.
And again luckily Nik didn't aim good and managed to shoot her only in her upper arm.
And it wasn't even a wound, it was a scratch.
My body overflowed with relief.
I knew Vicky.
She would never forgive herself if something serious happened to Jessy because of her.
And neither would I.
It is my job qs her boyfriend or whatever I was to protect Vicky at all costs.
And I failed. Once again I failed.
Soon after we got out of the cottage and started back to town, to get Vicky and Jessy to the closest hospital.
We left Nik in handcuffs by the heating pipes for the police to deal with him.
Yes, yes of course we gave them a call and let them know where they could find him.
I fuck up things but I am not stupid you know?
Vicky and Jessy were getting checked while me and Knox waited outside in the hallway.
"You know it's not your fault right? What happened to both of them is Nik's fault and no one else's are we clear?"
I chuckled lightly but there was no humor behind it.
"You know me too well brother. Of course it's my fault. If I didn't doubt Vicky in the first place nothing like this would happen. And if I managed to protect Vicky like I should, Jessy wouldn't get hurt."
My mind was full of self hatred.
I wanted to do one thing right for once in my life. How hard could it be?
"How many times do I need to fuck up before I will realize my gut is never lying. And before I do one thing right? How many times? HOW MANY FUCKING TIMES MAN!?"
My last sentence was shouted and I am pretty sure the whole hospital could hear me but I didn't care.
I was sick and tired of myself honestly.
"Now listen to me you stupid idiot. First stop shouting we are in a hospital after all! And second you didn't fuck up anything. If I was in your shoes and saw what you did I would come to the same conclusion you did. Because let's be honest here. Vicky's asshole of an ex is a psycho but unfortunately he is a smart psycho. We got to him in time though. Before he could hurt Vicky even more than he did. I am not saying her wounds are not serious, especially the ones on the inside, but it could be much worse."
I nodded my head because first of all I knew he was right, and second, it was pointless to argue with him.
I will just keep on hating myself.
Not like I didn't hate myself enough already.
A few tortures minutes passed by before our girls came out of examination rooms.
They were both bandaged here and there, but they wore matching smiles.
And that's all that mattered to me right now.
We got through much worse things so we can make it through this as well.
Most of all I was just lucky Nik was on his way to jail and I doubt he would get out any time soon.
We got to Jessy's car, because here's the truth. Me and Knix were here without our cars, and Vicky had a small Volkswagen polo that was enough for her, but got pretty crowded for 4 people.
But Jessy had a nice BMW x5 so enough space for everyone.
Me and Knox were on high alert even though the main danger was dealt with.
Once inside Jessy's car we relaxed a bit but as soon as we left the hospital's parking lot, Knox's phone rang.
"Oh that's the detective that's leading your case Vicky. I will put him on speaker in case he has any new information or needs any answers from you ok?"
As soon as she nodded her head Knox accepted the call and put it on speaker.
"Hey detective. Hope you have good news for us?"
I crossed my fingers so hard it hurt but it seems it still wasn't enough, because his next words will haunt us all for next few weeks at least if not even longer.
"Knox. We have really bad news. Nik managed to escape once you left him in the cottage. What he left behind is only a letter for you, Andrew, Jessy and Vicky."
Knox stiffened at his words and Vicky began shooking next to me.
I tried to comfort her with my presence but I knew nothing would help right now.
"What does it say, detective?"
He took an audible deep breath before he answered.
"You took what's mine, now I will take what's yours and you can't stop me. You will pay when you least expect it."
And I knew the threat was meant as seriously as a heart attack.
And that meant we had to look over our shoulders for the rest of our lives or at least until we manage to deal with Nik.
