Chapter 20 - Rebuilding her walls

Chapter 19 (Vicky's POV)

When I woke up, the spot beside me was empty.

I went to look for Andrew but stopped around the corner from the kitchen when I heard their conversation.

I couldn't help it. His words hurt me deeply.

Especially when he said I wasn't the right woman for him, and that I would make someone really happy one day, but that someone wouldn't be him.

I don't understand it really. How can he be so cold after a few days we spent together?

From his words, it seems like I am just a good f**k buddy and nothing more.

And I couldn't lie to myself anymore. His mother's words drove home the point.

Once more, I fell fast and hard for an i***t. But this time I won't be a toy. I am my own person.

And since he has already decided I will only stay a few more days, that's what I'll do.

So silently, I went back to Andrews' bedroom and was just about to open the website for scheduling your flight when there was a knock on the door.

It opened a crack and Andrew's mother poked her head inside.

A huge smile spread across her face and against my inner turmoil I returned the smile.

"Hey sweetheart. I was just wondering if you'd like some breakfast. I was just about to make some omelets. And there is also fresh coffee brewed if you'd like some."

"I'd love to join you, Mrs. McCAarthy just let me use the bathroom and I'll come to help you with breakfast."

"First you need to stop with that nonsense. Please call me Marge. If I had it my way you would be calling me mom, but my son is sometimes too stubborn for his own good."

I couldn't help but laugh. It was apparent she loved her son even if he wasn't perfect. And that was a perfect mom in my book.

"OK Marge, I'll use the bathroom real fast and I'll come to the kitchen."

She smiled at me and left me in the bedroom alone with my thoughts once more.

I decided not to dwell on things I couldn't change and went to relieve my bladder, then went to the kitchen.

Once I was there, I saw Amy was already in her chair babbling happily.

When she saw me, she spread her hands signaling for me to take her.

I picked her up immediately and put her on my hip.

"Hey there princess. You slept well? I didn't hear you even once throughout the night!"

I tickled her belly and she giggled with joy.

I lifted my head to see Marge looking at me with shock on her face.

"I am so sorry Marge, did I do something wrong? Should I put Amy back in her chair? Of course I should. I don't know what I was thinking. How am I supposed to help make breakfast with a little girl in my arms..."

I was rambling nervously and trying to get myself back on track when suddenly Marge's laugh stopped me in the middle of my rant. This time it was my turn to be shocked.

She looked at me and said softly: "You did nothing wrong, my dear. I am just not used to someone being happy to see Amy first thing in the morning, aside from Andrew, me and my husband. Shawna always just gets mad with her about being too loud in the morning."

"Oh" was my only response.

I looked down at the pretty little girl in my arms. How could anyone not be happy to see her smile in the morning? It was a mystery to me.

"But she is not loud. She is just a happy little monster. Probably just trying to tell us about her dreams. Isn't that right, my little princess? I am sure you had a great dream. Let me think. Was it dragons and castles and princes?"

She clapped her hands and shrieked in excitement.

Marge was also laughing.

"I think you are right. Now how about feeding my girls first and then we can go grocery shopping and maybe even find some clothes for you, Vicky. What do you say?"

"Um yeah, that would be amazing. I need some more warm clothes, it seems. Let me just put Amy in her chair and we can move her closer to the counter so she won't feel like she is left behind."

"Sounds amazing to me sweetheart. And please could you maybe pour me a cup of coffee?"

"No problem, I'll make myself some anyway, so one more shouldn't be a problem."

I prepared our coffees and Marge prepared all the ingredients.

Amy was blabbing on her stool and we both answered her like we understood what she was saying.

We were laughing, chatting, sipping coffee and making breakfast. It felt nice.

I turned to the fridge to get some more vegetables for our omelets and once I turned around, Amy had her hand in the flour and when she swung her hand in the air, all the flour hit me in the face.

I could see Amy and Marge were both waiting for me to explode. But in my eyes, it was only a kid playing. And an accident. There was no way I was getting mad with Amy over some flour.

"Now missy. You turned me into a ghost. And this ghost, loves to eat little princesses for breakfast."

With those words, I picked her up and blew a raspberry on her tummy. And we went back to laughing.

But this time two more laughs joined us.

I turned around to see Knox and Andrew standing in the doorway.

"Hey mom. This stray came around my garage and since he invited me and Vicky to breakfast I thought he could eat with us."

Knox punched him in the arm and Marge slapped him on it.

"Why all this violence so early in the morning, people?"

He moved next to me and Amy while Marge hugged Knox and they started chatting.

Andrew kissed Amy on the cheek and took her from my arms. The little monster cuddled closer to her daddy and I can't say I blame her. I wanted to do the same.

He gave me a soft smile and a peck on the lips before he pulled me next to him so he could whisper in my ear.

"Morning gorgeous. I think you look sexy as a ghost. And thank you for being so amazing with my girl here. It means a lot."

I turned around and looked at Amy.

"Little princess here deserves only the best."

Amy just smiled at me and when I looked up to Andrew, he was smiling as well.

My heart skipped a beat at the sight. He really was a perfect male specimen. But I had to keep my walls up. So instead, I cleared my throat and said.

"Now, if you will excuse me. This ghost needs a shower if she wants to be presentable for breakfast and then shopping. Marge, are you OK with finishing breakfast on your own ?"

She grinned at me.

"Offcourse dear. I fed these two when they were growing, so I'm used to cooking big meals. Go take a shower and be down here in 30 when breakfast will be ready."

I went to Marge to give her a hug and a peck on the cheek.

"Thank you Marge. I'll be fast I promise."

With those words, I was off to take a shower and I was still smiling, because my day was getting better.
