Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 | Second Trial

he morning air was cool and crisp as Eryk tightened the straps on his leather gloves, preparing himself for another day of challenges. His thoughts briefly lingered on the previous day's events—Lilia's unexpected confession, his success in stabilizing magic without relying on the Crimson eyes, and the whispers of schemes brewing beneath the surface. Today, the stakes would be higher.

Before heading out, he met with Lord Lavelle, who offered some last-minute advice. "Remember, Eryk," his father said with a serious expression, "these competitions will test more than just your combat skills. There's more to be gained here than points—alliances can be formed or broken based on today's results."

Eryk nodded, understanding that every step, every action, could tip the balance of power.

…..

The group combat challenge began in a grand arena where several mages, hired by three of the noble houses, oversaw the proceedings. Using powerful magic, they crafted simulated environments for each team, shaping the landscape into harsh terrains filled with dangerous weather conditions, obstacles, and magical creatures. Each arena posed unique challenges that forced the competitors to adapt quickly.

Eryk was unsurprised by the setup; he had anticipated that his team would face significant challenges. He chose his teammates carefully, including Selene and a few other skilled nobles. He also had a hunch that they would be targets for multiple teams, a suspicion that only fueled his determination to prepare.

The mages who controlled the arena were also tasked with intervening if the simulations got too dangerous or if the young nobles went too far. Their watchful presence added a layer of both security and tension, as their influence could change the outcome of any match.

…..

As the competition commenced, Eryk's team found themselves in a simulated frozen wasteland. The frigid wind bit through their clothing, and snowdrifts made movement difficult. Magical constructs resembling ice golems lurked among the blizzards, forcing the team to move cautiously.

"Stick together and keep your magic ready," Eryk instructed. "Selene, you take point with me. We'll need to conserve our strength and work in tandem."

Selene nodded, and they pressed on, maneuvering through the harsh environment with growing confidence. The synergy between Eryk and Selene became evident as they fought off a group of ice golems, combining magic and physical attacks with seamless coordination.

Eryk used the opportunity to further test his control over mana, condensing and channeling it through his circuits to enhance his spells. He noticed a marked improvement in stability compared to before, allowing him to execute his techniques more efficiently. Still, there was a sense of underlying instability that reminded him he was not yet fully in control.

…..

Halfway through the trial, just as Eryk had anticipated, their team was ambushed by a rival group. The attackers had chosen a more aggressive approach, hurling spells and using the environment to their advantage. The frozen ground shifted under their feet, manipulated by the arena mages to make the battle more chaotic.

The surprise attack forced Eryk's team to react quickly. "Get behind cover!" he shouted as a barrage of fireballs exploded nearby, melting patches of snow and leaving steam in the air.

Selene responded swiftly, casting a defensive barrier that deflected a wave of magical projectiles. Eryk seized the opening, focusing his mana to launch a powerful ice spell that momentarily destabilized the rival team's formation. The spell took more effort than he expected, causing his magic to fluctuate, but it was enough to turn the tide.

"Fall back and regroup!" one of the rival nobles shouted, realizing that Eryk's team had gained the upper hand. The ambush ended as quickly as it had begun, leaving behind an uneasy silence.

…..

After the competition, the overseer mages restored the arena to its original state, while the young nobles regrouped. Eryk observed the subtle tension between certain houses, catching whispers that suggested the ambush might not have been entirely spontaneous. The overseer mages' neutrality seemed questionable, as some appeared to favor particular noble houses with more lenient interventions.

Eryk used the opportunity to engage in conversations with members of rival houses, probing for information. His interactions were carefully measured, aimed at discerning whether the ambush was merely a competitive ploy or part of a larger scheme.

…..

Later, Eryk found Lilia resting by a stone bench. Her breath was heavy, but there was a fierce glint in her eyes—a sign that she had pushed herself to meet his challenge.

"You did well," Eryk said, offering her a small nod of acknowledgment.

She looked up, her expression softening for a moment. "I'm not done yet. There are still more matches." She hesitated before adding, "I just… want to understand what you're doing."

Eryk's gaze held hers for a moment before he replied, "You'll understand soon enough. Just stay focused."

Lilia's lips tightened slightly, as though she wanted to say more but chose not to. "I'll hold you to that," she said before standing and walking away, her earlier vulnerability masked behind a determined facade.

…..

In a secluded corridor, Eryk met with Selene, who had a grim look on her face. "There's something off about today's events," she began. "The ambush seemed too coordinated, and I noticed some of the overseer mages were less strict with certain teams. I suspect they might be allowing some incidents to happen."

Eryk crossed his arms, considering her words. "So, you think the mages could be involved in some larger plot?"

"It's possible," Selene replied, glancing around to ensure they were alone. "I'd suggest we keep a close watch on them and the noble houses that seem to be favored. This could be a way to manipulate the outcomes."

"Agreed," Eryk said, his mind already forming a plan. "If there is a conspiracy, we'll need to expose it at the right moment."

…..

As the day came to an end, Eryk reflected on the events. The competitions had revealed not only the skills of the young nobles but also the growing divide among the houses. It was clear that the trials served as more than just tests of strength—they were stages for hidden agendas.

He glanced at the setting sun, knowing that more challenges lay ahead. The real dangers, however, were not in the arenas; they lurked in the shadows, woven into the fabric of political games being played behind closed doors.

I'll be ready for whatever comes next, he thought, his resolve hardening.
