Chapter 23 - Chapter 23 | Aftershocks

As Eryk stepped out of the grand chamber, he kept his thoughts tightly controlled. The special session had gone as expected, though there were still pieces in motion. The investigation committee was formed, but it would take time for their influence to reveal itself. He glanced around at the departing nobles, observing the undercurrents of tension and satisfaction playing across their faces. Some seemed relieved, while others, like the representatives from House Vale, appeared less content.

Good, he thought, keeping his real plans concealed, even in his own mind. There were still things to unfold.

...

Casandra clenched her fists as she watched Eryk Lavelle leave the chamber, her irritation barely contained. She had expected the session to yield more in her favor, but now it felt as if the ground was shifting beneath her. That boy… she thought bitterly. He was hiding something, she was certain of it. The way he had presented his arguments, subtle and poised, left her wondering what moves he had made behind the scenes.

But there was no proof. Not yet, at least. Casandra's mind raced with possibilities as she walked away, her thoughts filled with suspicion.

…..

Selene kept her distance as the nobles dispersed, her mind clouded with unease. The session had gone smoothly, but her grandmother's words continued to echo in her mind. Lady Elara had warned her to stay cautious, to be aware of hidden agendas. And yet, the more Selene thought about Eryk, the more conflicted she became.

He's not telling me everything, she thought, her loyalty to him battling with her loyalty to her own bloodline. She had placed her trust in Eryk, but her grandmother's shadow loomed large over the unfolding events.

...

In the privacy of their estate, Lord Lavelle sat across from Eryk, his eyes betraying a mixture of pride and concern. "You handled yourself well today," he began, his voice measured. "But this committee… it could uncover things we're not ready for. There are too many variables at play."

His thoughts shifted to the growing pressure on their house, the delicate balance between keeping their power and avoiding scandal. I've trained him for this, he reminded himself, though there was always a part of him that worried about his son's safety.

Eryk listened to his father's concerns, nodding thoughtfully but keeping his true thoughts guarded. There were moves he had made that even his father didn't know about, and while the investigation was a risk, it was one he had anticipated. "I've taken precautions," Eryk replied, his tone calm but deliberately vague. "We'll be fine."

He offered no further explanation, knowing that the less said, the better. He had set the pieces in motion long before the session even began, but what those pieces were remained hidden.

...

Sitting quietly among the other nobles, one of the lesser-known representatives felt the weight of the committee's formation settling on their shoulders. They had been selected to serve, despite their own reluctance. I didn't ask for this, the noble thought, their internal monologue betraying the fear of being caught between the more powerful houses.

Being on the committee could provide leverage, but it also meant walking a tightrope between the interests of families like Lavelle and Vale. There were no safe choices in a game this high-stakes.

An overseer mage assigned to the committee felt a knot of dread in their stomach as the meeting concluded. Their mind replayed the competitions, the subtle manipulations they had allowed—under pressure, of course—but the consequences of those decisions now seemed far too real. How much do they know? the mage wondered. If the investigation went deep enough, everything could unravel, and that was a risk they were not prepared for.

...

Eryk met with Selene after the session, their usual dynamic strained. She shared her concerns about her grandmother's involvement, but there was more that weighed on her. "You're holding something back," Selene said quietly, her tone both accusatory and pleading.

Her thoughts swirled with uncertainty. I've trusted him with so much already… but how much can I really trust?

Eryk gave her a reassuring smile, but it did little to calm her. "I'm doing what's necessary," he said, his words carefully chosen. "We're still in this together."

....

Casandra found herself face-to-face with Eryk later that day, her frustrations bubbling to the surface. She tried to keep her composure, but every word Eryk spoke felt like a calculated move, and she couldn't shake the feeling that he was always one step ahead.

He's hiding something, her thoughts echoed. "I hope you realize," she said, her voice low, "that the investigation won't go unnoticed by certain families. If you have anything to hide, now would be the time to come clean."

Eryk's smile was small but sharp. "I don't think you need to worry about me."

...

As the day wore on, Eryk set his plans into motion. He knew the investigation would draw attention away from his true goals, but the details of his strategy remained obscured, even to him. False leads were placed, and quiet conversations were had with minor nobles who could be swayed.

His thoughts, as always, were deliberate but hidden from prying eyes. There were too many factors in play for him to reveal everything, even to himself. What mattered was that the board was set, and soon, his moves would be clear.

Minor Noble's.

One of the minor nobles who had confessed during the session reflected uneasily on their interaction with Eryk. Did I make the right choice? they wondered, feeling as though they had been pulled into something far larger than they had anticipated. Eryk had offered protection, but the noble couldn't shake the feeling that they had walked into another trap.

Lilia stood with Eryk in the estate's garden, her mind whirling with the recent developments. She had never been this involved in their family's affairs before, and part of her relished the newfound power and responsibility. But another part of her worried that Eryk was keeping too much from her.

Does he trust me as much as I trust him? she wondered.

Eryk, ever composed, reassured her as best he could, though his words felt rehearsed. "Everything is under control," he said. "I need you to keep doing what you've been doing—gathering information. It's important."

Lilia nodded, but her doubts remained. She would do as he asked, but she would also watch him closely. I'll find out what you're hiding, brother.

.....

Later that evening, Eryk returned to his chambers to find a small note waiting for him on his desk. The handwriting was familiar—elegant, precise, and unmistakably Lydia's. His fingers brushed the paper as he unfolded it, revealing a cryptic message written in coded language, one that only the two of them shared.

The note warned of a new player in the game, someone outside the noble families. Eryk's mind raced as he deciphered the hidden meaning. Someone else is pulling the strings… but why?

Whatever Lydia's intentions were, he would have to find out quickly. The message left more questions than answers.

Just as Eryk began to process the implications of Lydia's note, a loud crash echoed through the estate, followed by frantic shouting. Eryk's heart raced as he rushed outside to see the commotion. Servants were gathered around a collapsed structure—a stone balcony that had crumbled unexpectedly.

Amidst the chaos lay the body of one of the nobles from the investigation committee. Blood pooled on the stone, and the scene appeared to be a tragic accident, but Eryk's instincts screamed otherwise.

'Was this truly an accident?' he wondered, his eyes scanning the area.
