The next few weeks were the same, well with the addition of vivid dreams all surrounding the green eyed stranger. I would wake up in the middle of the night and almost swear he was in my room but it was just my mind. I was officially insane, obsessing over a guy that I had seen only once and for five minutes and WHO CLEARLY HAD A GIRLFRIEND!
Could life get any worse than this? The dinner bell rang and we all shuffled out of our hostels. Maria couldn't shut up about one of the boys they had snuck out to see last night. Was I irritated? Yes. Was I jealous? Yes. It wasn't fair that security only seemed to tighten whenever I had tried to sneak out. The nuns were just looking out for me as subjects of my father but still. It was complete bull. Believe it or not, the only times I had ever left this school was on my birthday. Again, though I understood it was complete bull.
We sat down at our table and that was the only time she dropped the conversation. I was about to put in a spoonful of spaghetti when she slapped it out of my hand. I turned to her about to smack the back of her head and the next thing shook me way passed my core.
Maria was beside me coughing up blood and foaming from her mouth. Blood started to ran down her eyes like tears and from her nose too. I was stunned with fear and then in a blur the girl who I was pretty sure sat at the end of the table was next to me pulling me out of my chair. When my best friend and roommate's body slumped over lifelessly that's when I started to scream. Reality had sunk in.
I was fighting back, struggling to get to her completely hysterical. Fat tears fell from my eyes as screams ripped from my throat. She was my best friend and I had known her for what felt like forever so how? WHY!
Next thing I knew two girls were dragging me out of the cafeteria towards the nuns who walked to me rather fast. "She's been compromised, inform the king and have her moved right away," one of the girls said and sister Anne nodded. "what's happening?" I asked.
The two looked at each other and bowed, "your highness we are part of your personal guard. Maria was your taster and personal guard, seeing as she has been poisoned your food might have been as well. It means someone found out about who and where you are. We must get you out of the state as soon as possible."
I couldn't wrap my head around it at first but it all made sense. Of course my family wouldn't just leave me in the hands of the nuns but that's not the elephant in the room. Someone knew exactly who I was and as I had always thought they were out to get me, but who?
When we emerged from the back entrance there was a black SUV waiting to take me away. My mind still wondered to Maria, she might have been hired by my family but she was still my friend, my best friend. Fresh tears started to flow as every memory flashed before my eyes.
The SUV left the gates and I bid farewell ti the place I'd been dreaming of leaving as soon as I was able to understand my situation. It was a moonless night and there were no stars in sight. I took it as a sign that the moon goddess was mourning with me. We had been driving for an hour when the car windows were smashed in and smoke filled the entire car.
Our driver lost control and started to convulse in pain just like everyone else except me. The SUV swerved and slammed into a tree making me hit my head against the front seat. Dots clouded my vision as my head pounded like someone had just slammed me into a brick wall.
The next thing I knew, the door right by me was ripped off it's hinges and I was dragged out like a sack of potatoes. I didn't know what they used and how it wasn't affecting me but it did make my vision hazy. I started to panic even more. First I was almost poisoned and now I was being kidnapped!
Somehow my body finally started to cooperate with my mind and I thrashed around furiously, screaming at the top of my lungs. Before I could even register what happened my head whipped to the side and a stinging sensation spread across my face quickly turning into pain. He hit me. The taste of my own blood in my mouth was stomach churning and brought my fear to new heights.
Something was sharp was jabbed into the side of my neck. The world became even more hazy, melting into a mess of undefinable colors. Darkness started to creep in from the corners of my eyes and then that's all there was.
pure oblivion.
The first thing I recognized were muffled voices. They were unfamiliar and seemed so far away, I was lost for a moment and then everything came rushing back. I was consumed by unparalleled fear. My heart was being so hard and fast that it hurt and I could hear it in my ears. The voices stopped and then footsteps started to get closer and closer to me. I was pretty sure my body was shaking like a leaf.
"pretending to be asleep won't help you," a male voice said but I didn't open my eyes. I just held myself in a fetal position trying to go to my happy place. Alas I was forced back to reality with a kick to the gut. It was so violent that I actually rolled on to my back. The pain spread and I couldn't help crying out in pain. "what do you want?" I asked them. There were three people in the room but only two actually acknowledged my presence.
"You'll know soon enough, who would've thought that the prestigious house Lycaon had such a dirty little secret?" The lady asked but it was more like a statement. There was no use in denying it. "Who are you?" If they wouldn't reveal what they wanted then maybe they could reveal enough for me to know who they might be.
"That really isn't your concern but seeing as dead men tell no tales, there's no harm," for the first time but remained where he stood. "We have orders to dispose of you once you cease to be of use to us," I was about to asked what he meant by that until a door I didn't even notice opened and the person who walked on left me stunned to my very core.
His girlfriend.
