Chapter 9 - 009 - It hatched!

It is in the middle of the night when I heard a cracking sound near me. For someone like me that has been trained to be alert all the time, I can open my eyes in a short time. I then look at the source of the sound.

"Hmm?" I can see a crack forming on the Ice Wyvern Egg. Noticing that, I sprung up from my bed toward the chair where the wyvern egg is placed. I noticed that the crack is expanding and started to branch out.

"What should I do!?" I search for the Monster Catalogue book. "Where is it? Didn't I put the book at this place? Ah—"

I remembered that I put that book in the office. In a flash, I run toward the office.

I can see that there is a light coming out from the office.

"Claude, what are you doing here at this time?" I spotted Claude inside the office lit up by a magical lamp. I wanted to ask more about what Claude is doing here… but there is a more pressing matter on my hand. I keep walking briskly toward the desk where the Monster Catalogue is stored. "Here it is, my book. I don't know what you are doing here. But don't push yourself too hard."

I closed the office room door, leaving Claude inside, and walk fast toward my bedroom. Or so I thought but I changed my mind and opened the office door again, "Wait, if you have nothing to do, help me in my bedroom. The ice wyvern egg is almost hatching." I said to Claude and once again closed the door.

Arriving at the room, I can see that there are many more cracks compared to a few minutes before. While observing the egg, I turn on a magic lantern to brighten this place a little. I then tried to read the Monster Catalogue and look for info about the hatching process.

"Master, can I open the door?" Claude asked from outside the room. "I also called Ema here."

"Sure, come inside.."

Claude and Ema come inside my bedroom both bringing their own lantern. I can see that both of them didn't look very sleepy. I know that Claude is still awake, but to see that Ema is showing an expression full of energy. 'As expected of professional servants, to not show their sleepiness here.'

"What should we do, master?" asked Ema.

"Can both of you bring me raw meat and warm water?"

Based on the instruction written in the Monster Catalogue, an Ice Wyvern need to replenish its energy when they come out from the egg. The meat and warm water are used for that. There is also a guide on how to give the meat.

"Please wait a minute," said Ema. She then converses with Claude, maybe both of them are talking about who brings what.

* * *

A sky blue colored small head and a part of the neck come out from the egg. The small wyvern is trying to open both of its eyes slowly. It is still covered with some kind of sticky layer from the egg. When it is able to open its eyes, it then looked around the room and sniffs using its nose that is located in the front of its long head.

*growl* The small wyvern makes a short and soft growl. It is a growl seeking attention instead of scaring the other, that is what it said in the book.

"Ema, get me some of the meat."

I take the plate that Ema brought and grab a small part of the meat. I put that meat in front of the wyvern mouth. The wyvern smelled the raw meat but refused to eat it. I keep moving my hand following the wyvern mouth. It keeps looking around the room. After some time pass, it can't resist the meat in front of its mouth.

"Oh! It is eating the meat!" Ema exclaimed.

"Want to try feeding it?"

"Can I?"

"Here," I change place with Ema and give her the plate filled with meat. "Be careful of your hand."

"Claude, where is the water?"

"It is on the table there."

"Okay, I will get that. Can you put another chair in front of the wyvern?"

I pick up the bowl filled with water from the table and put it on top of the newly put chair. I let the wyvern drink the water on its own when it needs.

"What should we name this wyvern?" I asked Ema and Claude.

"How about 'Icy'?" suggest Ema.

Claude chided in, "Because it is an Ice Wyvern? Is it really okay to name it as simple as that?"

"So, do you have any suggestion, Claude?" I asked Claude this time.

"Well, I don't really have one…"

I looked at Ema. Both of us nodded at the same time.

"Then Icy." "Icy it is." said both me and Ema.

Icy then tried to open a bigger hole. It shakes the egg left and right. After trying for a minute or so, another hole opens on the right and back sides of the egg. Icy's right wing pushes through the hard shell and comes out from that hole. Not long after, Icy is able to come out of the egg that has shielded itself for many months.

*growl* Icy let out a short and soft growl. It also tries to crawl using its wings toward Ema.

"Looks like Icy is interested in you," I said to Ema. Well, Ema is the one that gives the most food to Icy. It is not weird for Icy to try to get closer to the one that gives it food.

"Ema keep your guard up, okay?" In the end, the ice wyvern is still not a domesticated animal. The chance for Icy to show its wild instinct is high. Better safe than sorry.

Ema picks up the wyvern using her hands. It takes a short time before Icy falls asleep.

The three of us keep tending the baby wyvern until a ray of light passes through the gap in the windows.
