Chapter 3 - 003 - Learning about Ice Wyvern

After that Claude also explains all other things related to the Northwellen territory. He talks about the area that is included in the territory, how many towns and villages are in this place, important places like rivers or mines, and many other things.

"… and that is all that I need to report. There are many things that I still don't know but this should be enough for now," concluded Claude. I listened to his explanation for about 30 minutes.

"Looks like we need a good plan if we want to live here," I said. "Now there is something that I want to ask."

I pick the leather bag that was delivered by some servant when Claude was explaining. I put the big egg on the table and the book beside the egg.

"So, do you know what egg is this?" I asked pointing to the blue-whitish egg.

Before Claude can answer, the book beside started to open itself. It stopped when the page title 'Ice Wyvern' is opened by the book.

Both I and Claude are shocked by this.

"Looks like I don't need to ask you anymore," I popped a joke.

Claude asked, "Master, where did you get that?"

"I get this from an old woman that I met when I took the stagecoach. It is said this egg and the book are gifts for me. I also don't understand the detail, but I brought it with me."

"Eh?" Claude can't help but be shocked.

If I think again, why did I bring these with me? Why don't I just leave these in Timberville?

"So, what will you do with the egg?" asked Claude.

"I think I will let it hatch and tame it." I look at the book and there is indeed a part that talks about how to tame the Ice Wyvern. "I don't have anything to do in this place after all."

"Will that really be okay? A long time ago, I heard a story about someone that tried to tame a wyvern. That someone steals a wyvern egg from a mountain. In the end, that man can't tame the wyvern and is killed by that wyvern. I don't know if the story is true or just hearsay… But is taming a wyvern really possible?" says Claude, wanting to stop me but he can't say it to my face.

"Don't worry, I have experience battling a wyvern before. I know how to defend against them," I said. It is only five years or so since I become a knight, but I have fought against many kinds of magical beasts before, Wyvern is one of them.

"I understood… If master says so." I can see that Claude is still not convinced by my reasoning but he also knows that I have decided on this.

* * *

In the end, I can win over Claude with my idea. So I will tame this wyvern.

I look at the information written in the book. The information about the Ice Wyvern is written in detail.

Wyvern is a magical beast that looks similar to the legendary creature—Dragon. The difference is that Wyvern only has a pair of feet, meanwhile, a dragon has two pairs of feet. The average Wyvern is around 4 meters tall, can stretch for around 12 meters, and weigh from 500 kilograms to a ton. They also have a wing that spans around 25 meters.

I then found an interesting point on the page. It is said that a young wyvern can fly using its own wing but an adult wyvern can only fly with the help of wind magic. "This is the first time I heard about this… Is this true?" I keep a note to myself to look more into this later.

I then read information about the Ice Wyvern.

Ice Wyvern is the most common species of Wyvern in this kingdom—Forleik Kingdom. Ice Wyvern got its name from its appearance, it has a beautiful snow blue color with a white belly.

Most of the Ice Wyvern in this kingdom is living in the northern mountain range. The Ice Wyvern that lives in the northern mountain range usually preys on magical beasts inside the sacred forest. Because of the number of Ice Wyverns, the people that live in the Northwellen area most likely have seen an Ice Wyvern. They usually see an Ice Wyvern when it flies around hunting for food. Ice Wyvern is not fond of getting close to a human settlement. That is because many Ice Wyverns that get close to human settlement usually didn't come back alive.

After that, I read about the food of Ice Wyvern. Ice Wyvern likes to eat a big herbivore magical beast. An adult wyvern needs to eat 20 to 75 kilogram of meat every meal and they need to eat twice every week. In a difficult time, a wyvern can delay their meal for 2 weeks. After not eating for that long, they will slowly die of starvation.

"Seventy-five kilogram? Th-that is a lot…" I read that part again and make sure that I didn't misread. "Seventy-five kilogram per meal means that a hundred and fifty kilograms per week… Where can I get that amount of meat?"

Then there is the information about the egg. The visual looks of the egg, the average size of the egg, the number of eggs an Ice Wyvern can lay in each period, and many more are all written in the book.

There are also instructions on how to tame the wyvern. Many ways to tame the wyvern are written. From giving food to a wild adult wyvern. To steal the egg and let that egg hatch. It is said that the easiest way to tame a wyvern is to hatch an egg and then give food to the baby wyvern. That way the wyvern can become familiar with human and sees that human are not food or enemy.

"Even with that said, I still need to be careful. Claude's story might be based on a real story after all."

"Now, how to incubate the egg?" I read the book carefully so that I didn't miss any steps. I also didn't forget to write the important part.

"I see… So a wyvern egg can be said as a tenacious egg. It can endure even the harshest environment. It doesn't matter if the egg passes the winter outside, it will still be able to hatch. Only a predator or other wyvern can harm the ice wyvern egg. So… there is no special preparation needed to hatch a wyvern egg," muttered myself.

I also see that while the Ice Wyvern egg can survive in harsh conditions, it is better to have a good condition with a stable temperature for the egg.

"I only need to prepare a room with a stable temperature… I am pretty sure there is magic for that. I will ask Ema later, she should know about that magic."

I'm pretty sure the magic that I think about was used in the storeroom of the Lockway family. Most noble houses should have that cold room to store meat and other ingredients. There is a high chance this house also has a room with temperature-regulating magic.

From the meeting with Claude and me reading the info regarding Ice Wyvern. I make a list of goals and categorize them into short-term goals, medium-term goals, and long-term goals.

I have two short term goals. The first is to look at how to get meat for the Ice Wyvern. Second, I need to search about the temperature regulating magic.

Meanwhile, the medium-term goal I had is to search for an item special to this place to be sold.

And I don't know when I write this on my note, but there is a text on my long-term goal. It says, 'Learn the wind magic that the wyvern uses'.
