Zale POV
Eventually, I left Leona in the hall, and excused myself to go back to Adeline. Leona was a good friend, but I couldn’t help but feel that there was something else going on under all of her words. Maybe it was wrong of me, but I just couldn’t shake the suspicion that there was something else going on.
Either way, I didn’t particularly care to hang out with her for much longer. I went back to Adeline’s room.
And nearly had a heart attack at what I saw. Or what I didn’t see.
The bed was completely empty. The room was empty.
But more than that, the hospital clothes that Adeline had been wearing when I left her were abandoned on the bed. And the clothing that I had bought for her to change into when she recovered was nowhere in sight.
She was gone.
I went to the nearest nurse’s station and asked about her. But by the confused look on their faces, I knew that she hadn’t spoken to any one of them. And none of them knew where she was.
