Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: Ravine

Saniel rolled his eyes and stood up so he could take off with us riding him. "Always with the attitude." I shook my head a little and May laughed. "You two are a lot alike!" Saniel then roared back at us as I yelled as well. "No, we're not!" May laughed again. "Sure you are. You're both stubborn and cranky and my best friends!"

Me and Saniel looked at each other for a split second before he turned his head away to take off from the ground, angrily. I didn't know what to say to that as we gained altitude. 'She really thinks I'm her friend. I've never had a friend before. What am I saying? I don't know what she's trying to pull, but I know everyone is out for themselves.' I thought. I rolled my eyes and started keeping a lookout below us for some cliffs.

May did the same, and after a while, she pointed to the ground hurriedly. "Hey, I think I see something in that ravine down there!" I turned to follow her line of sight and see what she was pointing to. There was a long ravine cutting through the trees that wasn't wide enough for Saniel to fly through, yet long and deep enough to be considered a ravine. There were some plants that grew on each side of the cliffs, and we soon landed next to it.

I jumped off of Saniel once we were on the ground again, and I let go of May so she could fly next to me. I walked to the edge and looked down into the ravine to see the tangles of plants that protruded out of the sides of the hardened soil. "Any of those look like the right one?" May studied the plants until she lit up with joy. "Yes! I see it near the bottom! It's the brown one with the large nuts growing off of it."

She pointed to it and I crossed my arms. "Alright then, go get it." She paused and her excitement became concern. "But I can't lift it. I'm too tiny." My arms dropped to my sides again as I sighed with anger. "God damn it. Fine. I'll get it then." I started to climb down into the ravine, carefully deciding where to step next. May flew down beside me as I continued to climb down, and I mumbled to myself as I did so. "Why did it have to be a cliff?"

The ravine became thinner as I descended, and the other wall crept closer behind me. After a few more steps, the rock under my foot came loose from the wall and I fell down. "Ah!" May gasped when she saw me fall, and instead of plummeting down the rest of the cliff, my back hit the other wall behind me. I bounced forward again from the ricochet and hit my chestplate on the other wall. I bounced back and forth, again and again, all the way down until I managed to pull my sword from its sheath and stab it in the wall in front of me to prevent myself from bouncing again.

May caught up to me with worry in her voice. "Are you okay? Did you break anything?" My entire body was stiff as I answered her. "Other than my dignity?" I then turned my head to see that I was right beside the plant we needed. "At least we got what we came for." I picked one of the large nuts that grew on the ends of the pokey vines and put it in May's satchel that rested over my shoulder.

I was about to climb up again when I saw something move in the corner of my eye. My gaze followed the movement to the bottom of the ravine that was gripped in darkness. There were strange and thick brown vines coming up from the cavern below that seemed to be moving on their own. They were suspiciously waving in the air, and I started to climb up faster than before. "Nope."

Before I could get a foot higher, one of the vines shot up and wrapped around my leg. It pulled me down in a quick motion, and I lost my grip on my sword. It stayed stuck in the wall as I was pulled into the darkness. "AH!" May called my name in panic as I tumbled into a cavern below the ravine, and the only light was from the sunbeams that leaked into the cavern from where the vines pulled me from.

More vines wrapped around me and I could barely fight back as I was pulled along the rocks and gravel of the ravine floor. I soon realized that they weren't vines and were actually part of a creature. The tentacles that grabbed me were a few of many that came out of the monster's mouth, and it looked like a large glob of sweaty skin and fat that was big enough to touch the floor and the ceiling of the cave.

I struggled harder as I was dragged closer into the mouth of the thing, but I couldn't loosen its grip around me. Suddenly, a tiny pebble hit the monster followed by another. It stopped and turned to see May flying near the entrance. "Let go of him, you bully!" She threw another pebble and I took the opportunity to get free from the tentacles. The creature soon noticed my escape and sent them after me again. As I ran I noticed that the cavern was held up by some pillars of rock that looked unstable.

I ran behind one and the tentacles smashed into and destroyed it. I ran toward another as they continued after me, and I yelled at May as I did it. "What are you doing?! Get out of here, you idiot!" She yelled back as I tricked the monster into breaking another pillar. "I'm not leaving you here!" Suddenly, a tentacle grabbed her from out of the air and she screamed as it pulled her in to eat her.

I sighed as I maneuvered around another pillar while reaching into May's satchel. "Please be something useful." I pulled out a small pot by the handle and tilted my head. "That could work." I then quickly moved out of the way as the tentacles destroyed the pillar I was hiding behind, and I started running towards the last one.

On the way, I jumped and struck the creature in the head with the pot. It screeched in pain as I drew out a gash of blood from it, and it let go of May. She fell to the ground with barely any sound, and I quickly grabbed her and stuffed her in the pot before putting it back in her satchel. "Hey! What are-?!" She was in the bag before she could finish her sentence and I continued to run towards the final pillar.

As soon as I was close to it I ducked and slid my feet on the gravel as the monster struck above me. The pillar burst into dust and the cave began to shake. I got to my feet again and ran toward the entrance as the ceiling above the glob collapsed. Rocks and boulders came down in large amounts, and soon the monster could no longer be seen under the rubble. It had been crushed, and silence came over our surroundings as I caught my breath.
