Eva's POV
After my grandmother's funeral, I returned to my chambers. We did not have dinner as a family and my food was sent to my room. According to tradition, if the mother of the king dies all members of the royal family were to stay indoors for a sum of seven days. Our faces were not to be seen by anyone. Not the guards, the servant, absolutely no one. It was called the royal mourning seclusion.
It symbolized our family's solidarity and unity during a difficult time. By staying together and indoors, we demonstrated our shared sorrow and support for one another. Because Josephine's caretaker was not allowed to see her face I volunteered to take care of her for the seven days. I would also be taking my first step in keeping my promise to grandmother.
