Chapter 8 - Memories

As the sun rises up for a new day, Mr. Albert's family gathers around the table for breakfast. Everyone except Robin is present for the breakfast, who is enjoying a tranquil sleep in the guest room she has been offered for a temporary duration. Taking a spoonful into his mouth, during breakfast, Mr. Albert asks Sunnie

"Wouldn't she take breakfast?"

"I don't think so. She had a meal just a few hours ago and she is still sleeping." Retorts Sunnie. His father gives a slight nod and continues eating.

The needles of the clock keep moving round and round ceaselessly as usual and outstretch the sunset, when Sunnie's phone perceives a call, while he is busy reading a newspaper. Picking up the call, he says" Hello my friend! How are you doing today?"

"I am good. What is she doing?" Heartless speaks from the phone.

"She didn't come down. She's still sleeping!" Retorts Sunnie, folding the newspaper.

"What? Okay! … I will call you later." He turns astonished and ends up the phone call.

The sunset proceeds with darkness everywhere and the clock strikes 10:00p.m when Sunnie is playing a card game with his sisters in the T.V lounge when Robin beholds them from the corridor of the 1st floor. Consequently, She heads her way down the stairs with slow firm steps. As soon as they perceive her presence, they offer her to sit with them.

Sunnie asks her politely, passing a noble smile, "How are you feeling today?"

"Better!" She retorts with a mild nod.

"Aren't you hungry? We have eaten dinner." He asks.

Robin says "Yeah!"

Still possessing the same polite smile, he stands up and walks to the kitchen.

Collecting the colorful cards, Elles asks "Would you like to play with us?"

Sitting beside Elles, Robin replies "Sorry! Not now!"

Lara asks innocently "Are you going to sleep again?"

Elles frowns angrily at her little sister, directing her within her eyes to keep quiet.

Robin turns and contemples around but fails to perceive what her eyes were demanding for, then asks firmly "Where is he?"

Elles doesn't get whom she is talking about and hence she asks "Sorry, I didn't get it. Whom are you talking about?"

Robin gives a brief sign by saying "The person who left me here."

Meanwhile, Sunnie approaches back into the common and sits back in his seat, while saying, "Can you please wait for a few minutes until the food gets entirely heated."

Robin readily agrees, while continuing his question, "Yeah! Sure. I was talking about the person who left me here. What is his name? and …"

"And what?" Sunnie asks her to complete her sentence exhibiting his eagerness to know.

Robin seems a bit disturbed and distressed, trying to solve the number of queries generated within her mind "What is your name? I don't even know your name either. I just know her. (Pointing to Elles) She is Elles."

Sunnie responds with a mild smile over his face, concealing his confusion about whether he should tell her or not and what things to be told and what not? because he had to ask Heartless first.

Sunnie says coaxingly "I am Sunnie. The guy who left you here is Heartless. (passes a mirthful smile) I mean his name is Heartless. I am his close friend."

Robin doesn't believe in what she has just heard and asks in order to confirm "What? He does not seem to be Heartless."

In the meantime, the servant arrives and asks where to serve the food. After instructing him to serve dinner in the dining room, Sunnie continues to play the colorful card's game with great joy and delight along with his sisters. Robin has settled her eyes over them, discerning how happy siblings could be altogether, with her face possessing blank expressions and eyes disguising deep oceans of sweet memories. Suddenly, the home bell rings and a servant opens the door. Heartless is perceived to have set his feet in the common and is greeted with great admiration by Sunnie.

"Would you like to play with us?" Asks Sunnie with a pleasant smile.

Robin, looking very curiously and carefully at him, interrupts the two friends in a slow voice, "Oh! Heartless!"

Giving a brief glance at her face he maps out the muddled queries striking in her eyes within a moment but doesn't proceed with any reaction.

Turning back towards his lovely friend, Sunnie, Heartless refuses while passing the same lovely smile "No man! I am here to see Robin!" He turns his eyes back towards her.

"Would you like to tell me your real name please!" She ironically asks with her lips tightened.

Heartless gets a slight shock and retorts with an angry frown with his valiant eyes peering into hers, "Heartless is my only name!"

Sunnie feels better to keep staring silently rather than disturbing his wrathful friend and an incautious girl.

Robin is a little bit thrilled by his dreadful sight but tries to speak in a softer way, "Heartless can never be a name and I don't feel that you are heartless! Ah! … Actually, do you know what? We should have a detailed discussion about this."

"Do you want to be killed? …" His firm, slow voice along with his daring eyes still settled over her face discontents her soul.

Perceiving her terrified face, Sunnie babbles in order to avoid him from getting more outraged, "Your dinner has been served, Robin! Further conversation might be continued later."

"Haven't you had dinner yet? What were you doing?" He asks with an irritated accent.

She stands up swiftly and goes to the dining room with slight angry expressions over her face, unresponsive to his exasperated question. As soon as she departs from the room, Heartless turns his eyes to Sunnie.

Sunnie prates abruptly "Hey! Hey! Hey! I didn't say anything! Believe me! She asked me about who you are and what your name is at the time you just arrived. I only told her that you are Heartless and I am your close friend. That's it!"

Heartless takes his eyes off him with an infuriated sigh.

"Why are you getting angry?" Sunnie asks.

Heartless ignores his question and walks into the dining room. Robin is seen taking the meal while sitting on one of the wooden chairs. Her face still possesses mild anger but Heartless does not discern her anger because he is more focused about handling the situation.

While putting a spoonful of rice on her plate, she catches the sight of Heartless and asks abruptly "Why am I staying here?"

"I have been ordered to do so." He bluntly replies.

"Where is my dad? Who ordered you to keep me here?" She asks in the same accent.

Taking in an exasperated sigh, he explains "Your father has recovered from the disease and he is fine now. He ordered me to keep you at a safe and secure place."

Robin asks ironically while swallowing her last bite "Ordered you?"

Upon her rude accent, he speaks carelessly, "I am neither a public servant nor a hero who will save a kidnapped girl and keep her in a safe place."

Robin becomes surprised and his facial expressions turn quite the opposite. Her eyes, turned innocent, now settle over his face for a while.

He rejoins to explain for her satisfaction while inhaling a deep breath, "Listen! Mr. Robert was my father's friend and he trusted me a lot. You can ask your cousin, Ritcher about it."

Robin becomes amazed and abruptly puts forward another question,"How do you know Ritcher?"

Turning nervous for a moment, he gets the answer within a second: "We met in the hospital when your father was in the ICU."

His words mark the most recent memories of her father and his condition which leads Robin to drown in deep thoughts emotionally with grievous eyes. He glances at her mourning eyes.

He slowly whispers to himself "How irritating it is to tell a number of lies altogether."

After a minute's silence, he continues the conversation.

He speaks formally "Robin, do you know what? Your father called me to the hospital to ask me to do something for him. That's Why you are here with me right now."

Robin asks further "What did he say? I didn't see you."

He says with a little bit of hesitation "He asked me to … He asked me to run the documentation process of his property inheritance."

"What? But he was …." She shouts angrily.

Heartless interrupts her, shouting louder than her, "He was too conscious about you and your future. He told me that his property might be lost. He requested me to save it for you. He said that you don't know anything about me and you might not trust me so he gave me this."

He steadily takes out his wallet from his pocket and brings out a photograph and shows her.

Robin turns astonished and her eyes moist intensely peering at the picture while speaking abruptly "Ah!! My father!! How happy he is with me. How strong!"

"You need to follow my directions to let me fulfill the promise I made with your father." He says firmly.

Robin tries to express her confused state "But …"

He interrupts her by saying "Stop asking further questions."

"Listen! I am just asking your name!" She insists.

At the same moment, Sunnie enters the dining room asking Robin."Have you had your dinner?"

"Yes! It was delicious." She replies with a slight smile.

Sunnie appreciates the compliments and says "Thanks. It was cooked by my father and I helped him."

"I have already told you that Heartless is my only name!" He angrily retorts.

"Okay! I admit! But I never heard the name Heartless from my father." She replies with a confused accent.

Out of irritation, he replies bluntly "I am not used to giving explanations."

"Heartless, would you like to take tea?" Asks Sunnie immediately to turn his frame of mind.

"No bro! I am going back to my home." He refuses calmly.

"But why? You arrived just a few minutes ago." He puts forward a question, insisting him to stay.

"I am suffering with pain." He excuses.

Suddenly Robin interrupts, "I want to go back to my dad."

"You can't go right now. I will leave you myself after I have done my work, that is; fulfilled my promise." Suppressing his anger, he tries to speak calmly.

Sunnie speaks while passing a mirthful smile, "You can stay here with us, Robin! Until your order has been fulfilled."

As soon as he conveys his message, Sunnie, along with Heartless, departs from the dining room and walks outside. Sunnie figures out a distinguished amble in Heartless' style. Suddenly, he loses his balance and falls down with a mild stagger.

Sunnie clutches him straight away with all of the strength in his arms and says "Hey! Be careful! What happened to you?"

"Let me sit on this bench." He asks, pointing at a nearby bench.

He walks aside with the help of Sunnie and sits on the bench in his lawn whereas Sunnie keeps standing closer to him with his hand over his beloved friend's shoulder.

"Listen buddy! Stay here tonight."

Heartless nods, "Yeah! I think I must do so. I feel, I am unable to drive right now."

Sunnie, with his expressions turned worried and eyes exploring for any cut or wound over his body, steadily assists his friend to walk into the bedroom and lay down with comfort over the bed while stating,

"Anything you need…"

"I know I may ask you." He interrupts with a pleasant smirk over his lips.

"Now it seems acceptable that you haven't forgotten us." He Retorts with the same pleasant smile.

"I ever say one thing… My four friends fulfill the four chambers of my heart." He gives a spiritual statement within a slow, firm accent.

"You came to me after four months and didn't even have a detailed conversation on a phone call." Sunnie responds with a complaint.

"But you were with me in each of its seconds." Heartless retorts calmly.

"Robin thinks that you don't seem to be heartless. I guess she is right." He reacts with a joyous statement, expecting her friend's anger.

Moving his face aside, Heartless replies."Don't spoil my mood."

"Okay! (Suppressing his laughter) By the way, will you not meet Smartie and Saim again… They are feeling sorry for the misunderstanding created last time.." Sunnie opens up another topic.

"I met them during these four months, on the death anniversary of Saim's grandma." While wearing off his wristwatch and putting on the side table, Heartless tells.

They let a few unsaid minutes pass quietly.

Sunnie, trying to scrape his emotions, asks in a soft tone, "Wouldn't you ask about the fourth one?"

Heartless turns absolutely silent with his expressions growing blank.

"Come on man! You have done him a favor." Sunnie frustratedly adds.

"No! Certainly not!" He gives a brief statement.

"If he shed his blood for you, you returned him back." He adds further, trying to insist him.

"No! " Denies Heartless.

"You did not know the reality." He puts on slowly.

"Whatever! … He saved my life." Out of annoyance, he states a bit louder.

"And you saved him. Even at that time, you were not Heartless!" He adjoins his sentence.

He responds with nothing except keeping silent.

"He is well now." Adds Sunnie with a negligible voice.

Heartless seems sunk in the memories of the past while sensing aches in his entire body and even in the words he states, "I wanted to kill him, man!"

"It was a misunderstanding. You did not know anything. In fact, you were in trauma." Trying to explain to him, Sunnie retorts within a moderate voice.

"Stop talking about that! It increases my pain." Heartless states while shutting his eyes.

"Oh My dear friend! I don't want to hurt you. I just want you to see Tim just once." Sunnie speaks in a lovely accent.

"Do you think that I am hurt by anything?" He asks with an ironic smile.

"O, please! I am your friend and I know you more than yourself. You are not Heartless by birth! …" States Sunnie with the same ironic way.

"Stop!" Interrupts Heartless.

"Well! You are also a human and able to feel pain." Stubborn Sunnie completes his sentence.

"You are making a big mistake, my friend. Why doesn't a heartless person feel pain?"

"Oh seriously! I mean, I am just kidding." Replies Sunnie with a slight smile.

Both of them suddenly burst into mild laughter and cheers, enjoying their presence with one another.

"Have some rest and a peaceful night.Your condition doesn't seem well but I know I am not supposed to ask anything about your personal life but I am sure that you are hiding something." Says Sunnie while patting briefly over his shoulder.

Heartless does not reply with anything except taking a deep sigh.

"Well! I will not disturb you." Adds Sunnie.

Sunnie stands up with the intention to leave.

"Do you remember J. Black!" Suddenly Heartless' words grab his attention.

Sunnie begins to memorize thoughtfully.

"J. Black! Who married a woman by putting false blames on her husband who was an army captain? I told you about him." He adds to help with a hint.

Sunnie gets it, "Oh Yeah! You told us about that guy."

"Robin is the only daughter of that woman." Tells Heartless.

"Seriously!" Sunnie gets an astonishing earth.

He adds "She is the daughter of that army captain, Mr. Robert!"

Sunnie asks "You hate J. Black the most in the whole world. Don't you hate that woman?"

"Yeah, Of Course, I hate him the most but not that woman. But I don't like her either. She is selfish." Admits Heartless while raising one of his eyebrows.

"What type of mother is she? She left her only daughter even when she was so young and needed her and married another man! What does she want now?" Asks Sunnie frustratedly.

"She wants to save her." Adds Heartless.

"So why did she leave her? Huh!! A preplanned Drama!" Sunnie puts forward another question.

"This is a cruel world, my friend, the innocents are killed here." He advises his friend.

"Well! Why does she want to save her?" He again replies with a question.

"It's a long story! J. Black did not know that she had a daughter until a few days ago. His reason to kill Robin is to take over her property and some other things. He knows very well that there is no one to fight for her rights."

"What about her father?" Asks Sunnie.

"He is a kidney failure patient. He had a heart attack a few days back but fortunately recovered because of a kidney transplant." Tells Heartless.

"Thank God! … J. Black can never acquire her property because her father has a strong personality." States Sunnie with a blissful sigh.

"That's why he killed him!" He abruptly puts forward a brief statement.

"What?" Out of amazement, his mouth is left open and eyes blinkless.

A few minutes of silence passes.

"Doesn't she know that?" Asks Sunnie.

Heartless replies "No! Certainly not! J. Black knows about my involvement in this case."

"Everything is going wrong for her! What are your plans right now?" Sunnie asks once again.

"I discussed a plan with that lady. It was about saving Robin by giving a greed of her property to J. Black." He solemnly states.

Sunnie seems frightened and worried for her "What would happen when she comes to know about the breaking news regarding her father."

"She wouldn't want to live anymore. That's it!" He states.

"Hey man! I know you are named heartless by the world but you are not actually Heartless! We know you very well, being your friends." Sunnie begins convincing him with his accent turning emotional but suddenly takes a break because he has an idea that Heartless does not want to continue this topic.

After the passage of a few minutes of silence, Sunnie rejoins "One minute! Have you taken the responsibility to hand over her property to J. Black?"

Heartless admits "Yeah! This is not a big deal for me."

Turning aggrieved and displeased, his face possesses mixed expressions of anger and worry for his friend,

"Ah! … Well! What can I say! But whenever you need your friends, all four of us are ready to do anything for you."

Heartless denies "I know! That day Tim … Ah! I don't want to repeat it. It increases my pain … But I am not going to involve you all!"

"But we are not cowards. In fact, we all love each other!" He Insists him.

"Don't you remember that night of December? Eight years have passed, and I have not met Tim since then. My lovely friend is still in bed." Out of anger, his voice turns a bit louder.

Two minutes of silence in the room pass.

"If you have forgiven him so why don't you meet him." Asks Sunnie with great eagerness to know.

"I am not even able to be his friend." He gives a firm statement in a low voice.

"Are you mad? Why don't you understand that it was a misunderstanding? Okay, let's suppose, if this is not so, he is still your friend. Don't you know? A friend in need is a friend indeed!" He frustratedly cries aloud.

"I am not a child. Shut up!" Heartless states with an exasperated sigh.

Sunnie seems to be feeling irritated. He binds his hands and turns his face aside in a childish way. "Huh! You will not understand."

Heartless abruptly commences telling, "Do you know what? When Robin saw me for the first time, she was also trying to save me, not knowing who I am! (Laughs mirthlessly) Her sentences were the same as that of Tim… "Runaway! Save your life!" … and hence I sunk into the memories of that December night… It was a terrible night. It made me heartless." His tone turns full of anger.

"But it made you stronger also." States Sunnie with a mirthful smile over his lips and lots of love in his eyes for him, letting a tear drop from his eye.

"Do you think that helping Robin will recover your mistakes?" Asks Sunnie.

Taking a deep relaxing breath, Heartless closes his eyes.

While standing up, Sunnie pats his shoulder with lots of love and says, "Well! My friend! The night is going darker. You must sleep."

Heartless replies with a firm nod whereas Sunnie departs from the room and shuts the door.
