"I found the Sword" Connor said, looking at the man as he sat eating some bread.
"Good! I hope you know how to use it"
"What can you tell me about this place?" Connor asked. He finally met a local and was not about to leave without gathering proper information.
"Looks like I'm going to be stuck here for a while. Anywhere I can get some food or pick up some gold?" Connor wanted to settle down in some sort of town, maybe get himself a job and pay some people to teach him how to fight, as he can use those kinds of skills back on earth. As for learning Magic, like the Novices he saw use, was out of the question no matter how attractive it seemed, as he might need to join the inquisition to learn but he did not want to have any more contact with those people.
"Not around here! I just asked for the post so I can watch the storms. Amazing things when they blow past. Strange how they never come inland" The man, who was named Kam, said as he looked towards the ocean in the distance. "Anyways. A few weeks ago i would have sent you to the Harbor Town, but not anymore"
"Why not?"
"It's full of the inquisition! Protecting those ruins and recruiting for the damn white robed cult at the Monastery" He said, spitting. "Fucking bastards!" His hate for them seemed evident, as he frowned whenever he spoke of them. He continued shortly after. "I'm with the Don myself. We're the only ones who're still free. Living in a camp in the middle of a swamp, I know how it sounds, but freedom is freedom! I'd head to swamp if i were you, see if the Don'll take you in, or try your luck in Harbor Town maybe you'll find a way. As long as you stay away from the Monastery"
"So is Harbor Town safe? What are the Inquisition doing there?" Connor asked.
"Not much at the moment. There are still some of our boys there. They might help you out" Kam continued. "And that white robed lot probably won't bother you too much" He said, standing up. "I can show you the way, but believe me, you'd be better off at our camp"
Connor thought about it for a second. This Don seemed to be some sort of criminal or outlow of sorts. He can perhaps learn how to pick locks and other skills which might come in useful back on earth. As for Harbor Town, he can find a proper job there, exactly what he wanted, and maybe make a deal with a Novice of the Monastery and learn a bit of Magic.. Thinking this through, Connor couldn't decide yet.
"You mentioned a Monastery. What happens there?" He asked. Magic was something he couldn't resist. Firing fireballs and whatnot seemed unreal, so he needed to make sure the Monastery was as bad as he said before making a proper decision.
"The last place you wanna be!" Kam said quickly. "It's where the Inquisition trains their recruits.. Brainwash them!.. Stay well away from there"
"What's the Don got to offer me?" Kam is a good guy, which made Connor slightly curious about the Don and his camp.
"Meat, beer and a job? They might even train you as a fighter. You got a sword after all. Most they'll let you have at the Monastery is a staff. Just a big stick! That's not a real weapon!" Kam seemed adamant on rejecting the Monastery. Connor kept asking a few more questions, painting a proper picture of each faction and what will be offered and taught to him.
It went like this. The Don were, like he assumed, outlows. He'll be taught everything from pickpocketing to pick locking, archery and swordsmanship. But what they mostly specialize in is how to open locks, pickpocket, maybe acrobatics which would be useful while sneaking into residences and last but not least, how to sneak, and everything else that might get you in prison.
As for Harbor Town. If Connor wished to join the guards, which was the only place to learn any form of combat there, he would be taught the ways of the sword and shield with something Kam called Crystal Magic, which were essentially Spells like Magic bullet, Fireball and Frost.
The Monastery though was a group of Mages, so what they taught was fairly obvious. But other than Magic, Connor can learn Rune Magic, which Kam knew nothing about.
'So it's like Archers with swords.. Warriors with this Crystal Magic thing and Mages!' Connor thought to himself. He thought about it for a bit and couldn't make a decision. But he leaned more towards Harbor Town and the Monastery, which had access to Magic, so he decided that he'll figure things out along the way. Right now though, learning how to picklocks and how to fight as fast as possible seemed to be the most important thing, but going to Harbor Town to learn anything won't be an option at the start, only after earning their trust, and to be recruited to the Monastery can be done by earning the trust of Harbor Town's Guards so you can be invited. The easiest and fastest option to learn a few things without the responsibility was at the Don's camp.
"Alright, show me the way to your camp!" Connor said. His will as strong as ever.
'I will not die by some beast, I will live and survive through EVERYTHING!'
