"the cops" ...Mira was still quite surprised that the police were at her house. It is quite unusual for them to be her and they never came with anything good. It was considered bad luck when the police came...
"The cops!!" Her mother repeated amazed.
She came to the door and looked at the officer from head to toe as if confirming that truly, an office was in her home.
"How may we help you?" She asked gathering herself from the shock.
"We have come to conduct a search in your home" the officer replied curtly and Mira's mom looked even more confused.
"A neighbor Hood search" she asked once more. Maybe they were going from door to door conducting the search... at least that's what she thought.
"No. We have been given orders to search your house"
"Why?" She asked almost immediately. She couldn't just understand why the police would want to search her house.
"Well, a lady reported something items to be missing, and we believe that we would find them here" he replied once more curtly.
This time Mira too was confused, she just kept quiet so that her mom would do the talking but this time, she couldn't help herself from speaking.
"Why would anyone accuse us to stealing?", She was very upset with the accusations. It was a strong one too and it could lead to a serious problem.
Mira's mom gave her a sign to calm down and let her do the talking.
Mira could only nod.
"Pls may I know who it is that believes her property would be found in my home?" She asked seriously this time.
Rather than answering her, the officer said , "am sorry ma'am but you are delaying our time. If what we are looking for isn't in your home then we would gladly leave" .
Mira mom just looked at him. It was obvious that he wasn't going to reveal who it was so she and Mira shifted out of the way and allowed the police to carry out their search.
Even though Mira's mom tried to maintain a calm face, she was panicking. She didn't know what they were looking for or why they were searching her house but she was still scared.
But she knew one thing for sure, when you show signs of nervous when with the police, it makes you more suspicious that you may be hiding something and you were afraid of being discovered. So she maintained a calm expression. But she forgot one thing, she didn't inform Mira to do the same.
Mira was a wreck where shoe stood. She didn't know why but she couldn't just relax. She had a very bad feeling that the search won't end well. No matter how hard she tried to look calm and collected, she just couldn't. She felt uneasy and was so worried.
She looked at her mom's face. She looked so unconcerned.
' doesn't she care about this? How can she be so unconcerned in this situation' she asked herself still looking at her mom's expression.
She was baffled that her mom was still quiet with everything. She had expected her mom to be hysterical like every other mother who would be afraid seeing the police searching her house after being accused.
"Mom" she whispered trying to get her attention. Her mom looked at her questioningly.
'does she want to confess something' that was the first thought that came into her mind. She thought maybe her daughter knew what the police were looking else why would she be whispering.
"Mom, how could...." Mira couldn't complete her statement cause the officer in charge of the search had walked in. He looked at mira accusingly but said nothing.
"Officer , did you find what you were looking for?" Mira's mom asked, curiosity eating her .
Mira sucked in her breath waiting to hear what he had to say. He face didn't show any expression so no one could tell whether he found what he was looking for or whether he didn't.
He just stared at them blankly....before raising his hand slowly and held up a ring with a little diamond in the middle of it..
"This is what we are looking for " he coarsed voice sounded in the house.
Mira and her mom just looked in disbelief. This didn't belong to them. It was too expensive for them to afford. This could only mean one thing, they Have been accused .
"Mira levenson, your under arrest", the officer with his thick voice said. Before could react, she was handcuffed.
"Stop. My daughter would never do that" Mira's mom pleaded as she struggled with the officer who was handcuffing Mira.
"Ma'am, I advice you do not interfere with the police work. If you want to prove your daughter innocence then come to the station. Take her" the officer commanded and the walked out.
"Mom!" Was all Mira could say as she was led out. Even though when they got out of the house, no one was on the street to witness her arrest , she was quite certain that they peeped from the windows. They just didn't want to interfere.
"Nooo".....Mira's mom broke down in tears.
***********************
"I didn't know do anything. I didn't steal anything . Her being in the police station would affect her reputation and leave a big impact on her life.
Right now she was so confused, scared and unhappy. this was the time she needed her mum more than ever. She wasn't even worried about herself too much but about her mother. The accusations leveled against her was so serious and she wondered how they will be able to get her out of this.
The worst part of the situation was that mira did not even know who owns The Ring and how it ended up in our house.
"Would you keep quiet young lady! You're disturbing the entire station" all of the officers yelled.
"But I didn't do anything. Please you have to believe me" Mira pleaded once more.
"We would believe you when you prove it. You should be worried about how you fight this case instead of shouting" the officer who ransacked her house said.
The threw to the prison cell where she was to be alone.
Right now mira felt like the most of fortunate person in the world.
First she lost her jobs then she lost her boyfriend and now she found herself in the prison for something she never did .
Life couldn't have been more unfair to her. I was just hell bent on treating her badly.
She has always been unlucky from the day her father died. And she had only her mother to depend on and now she was also putting her mother into suffering with everything that's been going on in her life.
The cold air blew and she shivered.
Right now all she wanted to do was to be in her home and hug her mum but that was far from happening with the current situation.
"Mira" she heard a very familiar voice. Her mum was here and she was here to save her daughter..
"Mira" she called out more softly with r
tears choking her voice.
"I'll get you out of here I promise".
Mira could only nod and enjoy the warmth of her mother's hand on her cheek. The mother gave a smile not the one that was happy but the one that was saddened by The turn of events.
"Officer, is there a way I can get my daughter out of this? I know she is innocent of all the claims" Mira spoked to the officer in charge that had come to their house earlier on.
"I'm afraid you'll have to wait for the person who who accused your daughter to come and see whether truly this is the ring she's looking for" he replied tiredly.
"when will she get here officer I need to see her" Mira's mom replied desperately.
"You will have to wait then" the officer smirked.
How can he joke in this situation... Mira's mum thought. But there was nothing she can do. At least talk at the moment she is the most vulnerable.
Suddenly a woman and entered and all heads turned.
Mira's mom whose head was down looked at the shoes that just walked in.
Slowly she raised her head up and gazed at the woman dressed exquisitely..
"Oh you're here"...
