Chapter 2 - Sheno's Birth

August morning 2006, modern world, Peshawar city of Pakistan, romantic weather and Ali's family is in its stupendous mood. They are living a luxurious life. Humma (Ali's wife) is sitting alone in her room and it is the last stages of her third trimester of her second baby. Her room is on the second floor of the house and is fully adorned with modern style furniture. She is in her round, soft sofa while imagining the life of her two children; meanwhile her maid knocks the door.

Humma: Come in.

Maid: Ma'am, Sir is calling you for dinner.

Humma: Hmm, I will come. You go now.

She looks in the mirror and then goes downstairs.

Ali: Common Rose it is Sunday today and you are all alone in the room. Come here, sit with us.

Humma: Oh dear! I was little busy.

She hugs Almir (her son), joins the table and the maid serves her the meal.

Humma: You were busy in what? Ornamentation of your room, on call with your sister, watching TV, doing internet… What???

She gives him a smile and then hit his lines in to a deep centre.

Humma: Darling, you know I am curious about my second child, whether he would be a male or female and of course I have no objection, if any of them.

Abruptly, Granny { Alis's mother} comes out of her room and joins the dinner-table.

Granny: Yes Humma, I also don't have any objection. We have a sweet male baby – she kisses Almir- now either male or female both will be fine. But if Ali's father would have been here with us today so he must have given priority to a female baby, which is a blessing for sure.

While talking about her late husband, granny becomes sad and Ali shows some gestures of emotional support to her mom.

Humma: You know I have already chosen names. If she is a girl then we will call her Aabish, and if a boy, then will name him as Arham. These names are so unique. Have you listened to them before mama?

Granny: Oh, I have never heard them before. Such pretty names they are.

After the dinner, Humma tries to go back to her room but as she goes upstairs, labor pain bows her down. Mr. Ali takes her in his arms. Granny calls a driver and they bring her to a hospital.

It is nearby mid night by now, weather is horrible, lighting and thundering is all around.

Doctor admits Humma. Mr. Ali and his mother remain outside from the labor room and thus they pass rest of the night on hospital chairs.

Granny: We have left Almir on blesses of maid. He is just three years old. He might be upset, better we have taken him here.

Mr. Ali: Nothing to worry mama, the maid is very responsible.

Granny: I know she is, but Almir cannot live without me. He always requires her mama or me at least.

Mr. Ali: And you're always scared for him.

Granny: Of course, he is my prince, but its pleasure that he is felicitous, now he will have a partner baby just in few hours.

Eventually, doctors came out from the room. Mr. Ali went to his wife and Granny rushed to a nurse, standing there.

Granny: Boy or girl? (She asked enthusiastically from the Nurse and took 5000 rupees from her purse in order to give it to her as a reward.)

Nurse: None of them. (She replied with an apology).

Granny: What do you mean?

Nurse: A third-gender and doctors said there is no possible treatment.

Mr. Ali shows a confusing expression. Humma holds his hand in her hand and gave him a sorrowful expression with tears. Granny put back the money in the purse, silently. Nurse gives the baby into her hands and left the room. Granny takes the baby with no feeling.

There is complete silence for few minutes. Then, Granny starts crying.

Granny: Oh God! How ill-fated! How unfortunate! How embarrassing! ...

It is about to morning now. Mr. Ali calls the driver and they all come back home.

So, a baby comes to the world anonymously. Humma's family is dolorous, embarrassed and desperate. They hide it from their acquaintances, friends and from the relatives even. No celebration is done as they did at the time of Almir. They even want to kill the baby but they fail because of having a soft side in their hearts. At last they give the baby to their maid. They tell everyone, in their circle, that this baby is hers and their own baby is dead. She now lives in the servant quarter with her new mom. Her financial needs are fulfilled by her father but only as a guardian not as a real father.
