Chereads / Brain Eater in the Apocalypse / Chapter 22 - Detour and Attacked

Chapter 22 - Detour and Attacked

Pati turns right in a junction before he saw the green light stabbing the sky is already near, about one mile away or maybe a bit more. With the Heavy Walkers he killed before, he gains an additional 27 Strength and 10 Vitality alongside 4 black coins.

For some reason, the air nearing the green light becomes colder.

Not that the actual air around him got colder but it's like his senses are tricked to feel the coldness of the air, it's hard to explain but the feeling is nothing Pati has ever felt before. While sprinting through the empty and desolate street, Jeff looks around with a frown.

Jeff glances at the buildings on the side of the street that they went past.

Although it's just a brief moment, the corner of his eyes caught something moving from the buildings. And soon his eyes saw a couple of people on the top floors of the buildings peeking from the window, they doesn't look like Zombies.

"Yo, Pati! I think I saw survivors in these buildings", Jeff said while still sprinting.

Hearing this, Pati glanced up, and just like what Jeff said he saw many people peeking from the top floor of the buildings on the side of the street. Since this part of the city is a business district, every building around here are skyscraper.

While looking at this, Pati frowned, 'They must've been stuck there since the Black Wind'

During the start of the apocalypse when the black wind struck them, Pati is in the cafeteria and it's opened so he got hit directly by the black wind. These people are inside a building, so they should be sheltered from the black wind.

After the black wind struck, Zombies are starting to appear.

Judging from the building that is at least more than 20 floors high, they must've been stuck there with Zombies crawling on the lower floors that are ready to devour them if seen.

"Should we help them?", Jeff looks at Pati and asks.

Deliberating for a moment, Pati then shook his head, "Let's go to the green light first. After that then we can start thinking of saving them, if they survive for two days then they can survive for a couple more hours"

With that, Jeff nodded his head before glancing over his shoulder.

Jeff's eyes widen before a slight chuckle escape his mouth when he saw his back, tapping Pati by his shoulders he then said while pointing at the back, "Are we running too fast? Look at them"

Upon hearing this, Pati stopped and looks at his back.

Out of his expectation, Dinda and Salsa are riding a bike. Dinda is trying to pedal to catch up to them while Salsa is sitting on her back, 'Where the heck did they get that bicycle from?', Pati thought shaking his head.

But seeing that they didn't complain at all and even figured out a solution, Pati is impressed.

"Why are we stopping?", Dinda asks with slightly heavy breaths.

Hearing this, Pati shakes his head before he points to an alley on the left, "We're going to go through there, follow us close from behind. There will be some Walkers there so make sure to stick to us"'

Although there are some Walkers scattered on the street, they are too slow.

Even with Dinda and Salsa that are riding a bike, these Walkers can't catch up to them thanks to their stiff bodies. But if they're going in an alley, the Walkers will be able to block them.

Salsa who peeks from the back then asks, "The green light is in front of us, why are we going there?"

"Well... about that", Jeff mutters before glancing at Pati, but then suddenly,

Crash!

Boom!

Dinda and Salsa were surprised upon hearing a loud crashing sound that came from their front, the both of them looks in the crashing sound direction before they saw a creature there. It roared menacingly with survivors running around the place.

This Zombie is taller and more monstrous than a Brawler, it stands more than eleven feet high.

What's more terrifying about it is not just because of its sheer monstrous body, but the four purple tentacles that are wiggling on its back that catch and strike the running survivors like a whip. Even when the survivors hide inside a room, the concrete walls are nothing to those tentacles.

Jeff points at that Zombie on the far end with his thumb, "We find that thing..."

"I know what you are going to say but don't even bother asking, we're not strong enough to save those survivors. Just focus on the task at hand. After we're strong enough if you want to help them and bring them to the military base on the north, then I won't stop you", Pati quickly added seeing Dinda and Salsa were about to say something.

Hearing this as if Pati can read their minds, Dinda and Salsa didn't say anything.

The four of them then resume their journey going through the alley to take a detour from that monstrous Zombie, they dash inside the alley with Pati at the front whacking every Walker that came into their way.

Dinda and Salsa are sticking close to the two of them since the Walkers are many here.

Not only that, even though Pati smacks the Walkers out of the way some of them didn't die. If they're too left behind then one of them might grab the bike they're riding. About three minutes later, they reach the end of the alley.

But just as they emerges on the other end of the alley, they all stopped in a union.

The bike that Dinda and Salsa ride makes a screeching sound as Jeff and Pati stopped in front of them, both of them are looking up sensing something heading towards them.

"Watch out!"

Caaw!!

Boom!

In the nick of time, the four of them jumped to the side seeing something descending from the sky.

Dinda and Salsa jumped off of the bike after they heard Pati's shout, the two of them then got up while holding their knives tighter and saw the creature that attacked them. Pati and Jeff also did the same as they recovers and gets into their battle stance.

All of them look at the creature that attacked them and destroyed the ground where they stood.

The creature in front of them is in fact a Zombie, it should be a former bird that got turned into a Zombie. It's shaped like a bird with two wings and a beak, but there are no feathers on its body except on its wings.

Even though it should be a bird, Pati can't decipher what kind of bird it is.

Since it already turned into a Zombie, this bird Zombie has decayed ashy skin with a disfigured face and is even missing an eye. Its beak has a hint of former yellow but is now tainted and turns brownish.

Upon looking at this Zombie and how fast it can fly, Pati frown knowing that they can't escape.

Without even a hint of hesitation, Pati dashes in using his Leap skill followed by Jeff who is also not that slower than Pati. They both are like fierce tigers that are not scared of anything.

Pati clasps both of his hands together intending to hit the bird Zombie with Hammer Fist skill.

Although it was a bird Zombie, it seems to have a hint of consciousness as it covers its body with its wings to block Pati's attack. Putting everything into this one attack, Pati hammered the bird Zombie with all his might.

Bam!

It feels like steel, Pati feels like he's hitting steel, not a Zombie.

But nevertheless, that one attack pushes the bird Zombie back before hitting a building wall on its back. Dinda and Salsa manage to get out of the way almost getting hit by the bird Zombie, they both rolls on the ground before jumping away to safety.

Just as they jumped away, they saw a couple of Walkers heading toward them.

"Let's let the boys deal with that thing, we need to at least beat these Walkers", Dinda said while holding her knife in front of her, Salsa also nodded her head before they jumped in and engage in a fight with the Walkers.

On the other side,

The bird Zombie roared loudly upon crashing to the wall making Pati and Jeff widen their eyes in alert, it was very loud and just might be heard by the monstrous Zombie from before.

With a swift movement, Pati dashes in again before he used his new skill.

"Fear of Mind!"

Swish!

Just after he activates his new skill Fear of Mind, the bird Zombie's body suddenly becomes stiff. This allows Pati to punch its body embedding it deeper into the wall before Jeff uses his All-out Slash skill and slashes the bird Zombie on its head with his machete.

Clang!

Under the fearsome duo, the bird Zombie got sent crashing to the side.

Its beak snap because of the dull machete imbued with the All-out Slash skill, Pati then jumped up and use his Hammer Fist skill right on the bird Zombie's head and killed it instantly.

[Gained a level 16 Featherless Striker Eagle Chaos]

With the bird Zombie killed, Pati looks to the side and finds the girls are fighting the Walkers.

Although their movement in using a knife is a bit clumsy, they slowly start to get used to stabbing the knife without holding it back. Dinda already killed two Walkers while Salsa to Pati's surprise already killed one on her own.

They're starting to adapt to the situation and it's a good thing.

"Should we help them?", Jeff asks from the side.

Hearing this, Pati shook his head and looks back at the bird Zombie's corpse, "Let them be, they also need to get stronger to survive", he replied but soon frown when he saw a weird item that he had never seen dropped from a Zombie before.

Aside from a green crystal and two black coins, there is an arm-length bone that is ashy in color.

Pati took the bone and inspects it, 'What is this thing? Can I use it as a weapon?', he thought before he shifted his gaze to the abandoned car on the side. With light steps, Pati approached the car before swinging the ashy bone vertically.

Crash!

Just like that, the car got destroyed by one hit.

But it's hard to tell whether it was because of the power of the bone or just his sheer strength that caused this. At this point, even if Pati holds a wooden stick he probably can destroy a car just like this.

'It's quite durable, maybe I'll use this for while', Pati thought while nodding his head.

A moment later Dinda and Salsa finished off the Walkers around here, Dinda killed five Walkers on her own while Salsa killed three. It was a massive improvement for them since Dinda almost died killing a Walker before and Salsa got helped by the guy that died.

"What level is your level?", Pati asked the others.

Hearing this, Jeff, Dinda, and Salsa replied in order after looking at their status window.

"Just reached level 10 before, got a new skill. It's called Body Charge"

"I'm level 4, I can feel my body got stronger..."

"Level 3..."

Pati nodded his head in confirmation seeing that the girls are getting stronger and slowly adapted to fighting the Walkers, he then looks at Salsa before she immediately nodded her head and went to the bird Zombie's corpse to harvest its brain.

After doing that, his eyes then shifted to Jeff who got a new skill.

'Hmm... he got a new skill in level 10 while I got my new skill in level 15, is it because he's very talented or it's just his class as a Berserker?', Pati thought inside his head. During the start of the apocalypse, the amount of Chaos Jeff got shows that he's more talented than Pati.

At least that is what Pati thought.

In this case, it must've been because of his Berserker Class that gave him a skill at level 10. But nevertheless, the Fear of Mind skill that he got from reaching level 15 is very useful.

From the fight before, the Fear of Mind seems to stun the bird Zombie for a moment.

It's a very powerful skill already and he can't even imagine if he can do it to everyone, but there's no way that he can do that to just anyone otherwise the Fear of Mind skill will be too overpowered. No games would allow a skill that is overpowered.

Trying to make sure, Pati glanced at Jeff.

Jeff looks at Pati innocently but then suddenly his mind got hit by a wave of invisible energy making his eyes widen, he can't move his body for a solid three seconds before snapping out of the skill.

"Fuck! What was that?!", Jeff cursed while holding his head in pain.

Hearing this, Pati replied while rubbing his chin, "My new skill, I'm just trying to learn more about it"

"Why do you need to try it on me you fucker, try it on the Zombies!", Jeff complained, his mind still slightly throbbing because of the Fear of Mind skill.

But Pati didn't reply as he was dwelling on his thought.

From that test to Jeff he finds that the Fear of Mind lasted three seconds but he's pretty sure the bird Zombie before only got stunned for less than that, so this at least confirms that the effect of the skill varies depending on the target.

When Pati was about to ask what Jeff felt under his skill, he noticed something.

Pati looks down to the ground and finds that the ground around them is darker, he then looks to the side and finds that about 600 feet from the ground from where they stood looks normal again getting light from the sun.

Underneath his feet, the ground is darker. Almost as if they're standing in a shadow.

But just as he realized that,

Caaw!

Caaw!

A couple of cawing sounds can be heard from above.

Instinctively Pati and the others look up and saw at least more than three dozen of bird Zombies that are hovering in the sky creating a circle, their attention are definitely fixated on them judging from their beaks that occasionally glanced at them.

Upon looking at this, Pati gritted his teeth glancing at the dead bird Zombie he killed.

That bird Zombie's roar should've been the cause of the appearance of this horde of bird Zombies, and this can't help but make Pati curse, 'Shit... there are so many of them'
