Chereads / When I Die / Chapter 10 - Ch.8

Chapter 10 - Ch.8

Perry

I looked around for any way into the room. The door was blocked by shelves and the window only had a gap. I slid off the coat I had borrowed and threw it on the floor. I might be small enough to fit.

I tried to block out the sounds of those things and Quinn's grunts. My heart was racing.

Placing my hands on the cool metal of the gate, I pushed it up as far as it would. I'd have to make it work. I hopped up onto the counter and slid under the gate. The pulled pieces of metal cut into my back but I ignored it.

My breath caught in my throat as I began to sweat. Quinn was stuck behind a shelf and two of those things were trying their hardest to get to him.

I was terrified. I wasn't ready for this. Why did I volunteer?

"Fuck," I breathed and grabbed onto the metal gate. I began shaking it and banging on it,"Over here you ugly fucks." I called and shook it harder.

They stopped trying to get at Quinn and directed their focus at me. I hopped onto the counter once more and went out the way I got in. I kept shaking the gate and calling for them. Soon, the biters were in my face, only a thing layer of metal keeping them from ripping it off.

I watched as Quinn snuck out from behind the shelf and pulled out a knife. It was a weird shape. He slowly walked behind them and I shut my eyes. The sounds stopped and their bodies dropped.

"Thanks," Quinn whispered, out of breath. I nodded and slowly opened my eyes. The creatures were no where to be seen. I nodded and turned, grabbing my coat and walking towards my stuff. I wanted to go home.

Life wasn't supposed to be like this.

"Perry, Watch out!" Quinn called from the room and I turned to look at him. He was staring at something else. I slowly turned my head and my heart began racing once again.

I was face to face with one of the biters once again. This time, without the metal gate to separate us.

It released one of those ear piercing screams and I covered my ears. I had never been next to one when it had screamed. I felt like my head was going to explode.

Without a seconds hesitation it pounced at me, shoving me into one of the shelves.

The shelf fell back with both of us on top. I used my hands and feet to keep it away but it didn't seem to work. He was too strong. It was too strong.

"C'mon you got it, princess." Quinn was now standing a few feet from us. He had a smug smile and his arms were crossed against his chest.

"Fucking," I grunted, "Help me." I said. I felt my arms shaking underneath its weight. I could hear the chomping of its' teeth as it tried to go for me.

"You've got it." Quinn said and rage filled my body. I reached for a piece of the broken shelf and gripped it tightly. I felt it cutting into my skin but I gripped hard.

With every bit of strength I had, I pushed away the thing and waisted no time shoving the piece of metal into its skull. Breathing heavy, I looked down and reality clicked. I had just killed something.

I just murdered someone.

"I told you. You had it." I looked at Quinn and felt all that rage come back.

"Who the fuck do you think you are? I help you and this is how you repay me?" I asked and stood, my legs and hands were still shaking.

"I didn't ask for your help." Quinn stated blankly.

"But I asked for yours and you stood there twiddling your god damn thumbs." I spat at him.

I shook my head and stepped over the body to my bag. I quickly grabbed it and winced. The cut in my hand was deep and it hurt like hell. I'd have to see if they had a doctor or nurse at the compound. I switched hands and walked out of the store.

I'm not really sure how long I walked until I saw the vehicles and everyone standing next to them.

"I dont give a fuck what protocols you have. They're late. I'm going after them." Keith was in the face of the driver from earlier.

They didn't notice Quinn or myself until I was shoving my bag into the chest of one of the soldiers.

"Perry," Keith looked at me, relief was all I saw before concern.

"What the fuck? Are you okay?" He asked and I didn't answer. I was tired and pissed off.

"Private, What happened?" The driver asked and Quinn shrugged nonchalantly, "Ran into some biters."

I scoffed and shook my head. Sure. That's what happened.

"What did you do to her?" Keith asked, stepping closer to me.

"Nothing," Quinn smirked and looked at me. I felt nauseous. I stepped away from everyone and walked to one of the SUVs.

Keith followed me and opened the door. Before I could get in, He placed a gentle hand on my shoulder and turned me towards him.

"What happened?" Keith asked, looking me up and down. I was covered in blood. Some of it was mine and some was that things'.

"Nothing," I sighed and ran my other hand through my hair.

"That doesn't look like nothing," He said and cautiously grabbed my injured hand. I winced. I hadn't realized how bad it really hurt.

"You're going to need stitches," Keith reached into his pocket and grabbed something white.

Gauze?

He began wrapping it gently and lightly around the wound. I winced and he looked up at me and back down.

"Ill stitch it for you when we get home, okay?" I nodded at his words and he helped me into the SUV.

Soon enough everyone was in and we were on the way back to the compound. Well, I guess our new home.

"Perry," I whispered as I placed her on the bed. She had fallen asleep on the way back. I'm not sure what happened but she was in rough shape. As soon as she was awake and could tell me what happened, I'd know what to do with that asshole she was paired with.

"Perry," I said and gently shook her shoulder. She gasped and sat up. She began looking all around until her eyes landed on me.

"Fuck, I fell asleep, didn't I?" She rubbed her eyes and I nodded.

"You were tired," I said quietly. She chuckled, "Still am."

I smiled, "Are you okay?" I asked and Perry looked at me.

"Yeah why wouldn't I be?" Perry smiled and I returned it. We sat there for a few minutes. We didn't talk or look at each other. We just enjoyed the peace.

As much as I wanted to let her rest, I needed to know.

"What happened?" I asked and placed my hand on her leg. I wanted her to know I wasn't the enemy.

She sighed and sat up, closing the distance between us a little. I felt my breathing pickup as she ran a hand through her hair.

"I helped Quinn with two of those things. I got attacked by one. He refused to help." She looked down and I felt angry. He refused to help her?

"What?" I scoffed.

"Its not a big thing. I just got scared and I," She inhaled and looked back up at me tears in her eyes, "I killed one."

I felt the shock from her words hit me. She killed one? I had and I didn't think much of it. But I hadn't seen her killing one anytime soon or, really, ever. She was just too pure for that.

I put a hand on her cheek and wiped away the fallen tears, "That must've been hard. I'm sorry, Perry. You did good though."

"It doesn't feel like it." She sniffled and I nodded. It doesn't.

"Im tired, Keith." Perry sat back against the pillows and yawned.

"Do you want me to stay or go?" I prayed she said stay. I wanted to be here for her.

"Stay. Please."
