Sam
Day of the outbreak...
I looked down at my loveable oblivious friend, Perry. She was staring at the front of the room where our teacher was teaching, but that was well over 5 minutes ago.
I tapped my hand on the desk, "Perry," I smiled when she looked up at me. She was adorable sometimes.
I began walking out of the room and Perry quickly followed after me, "What's up?" She asked, she definitely knew I had some tea to tell her.
Some people had a therapist, I had a short brunette with a bad temper. She was amazing though- Well unless she was hungry. Then she was pretty much a chihuahua.
"So, Evan asked me out on a date! I was a little skeptical at first but he gave me daffodils! Like, how did he even know they were my favorite?" I laughed and looked at Perry. She was once again in her own little world.
I reached over and tugged on her flannel, "Are you even listening?"
Perry nodded, "He sounds like a tool." Well, there's the answer to my question.
I threw my head back and groaned, "I just told you about how he bought me flowers and asked me to the movies!" I got butterflies just thinking about going with him. He was beyond dreamy. Nearly 6'4 and on the football team.
"Exactly, He sounds like a tool." Perry winked at me and I rolled my eyes. What would I do without her?
"All students return back to class. Restricted movement is now in place." A loud recorded message began to blast over the intercom.
Perry and I looked at each other in sync, "Skip?"
The two of us flashed a devious grin and raced to the girls bathroom on the second floor. No one took these restricted movement practices seriously. We usually skipped and hid in the bathroom. Go Humble High!
We rushed into the bathroom and Perry locked the door while I threw my bag onto the floor. For the next however long, This would be our little hangout. It stunk a little and wasn't clean, but anything beat 4th period with Mr. Freeman.
I cocked an eyebrow at Per, "Didn't we just have a drill a few days ago?" I was a little anxious.
"Yeah but you know how they do these things. Couple times a week once a year." She shrugged and sat on one of the sinks.
It was weird how often they did these things. I shrugged it off and began pacing around the bathroom while scrolling on my phone. I scrolled through Igram, trying to distract myself but It only made it worse.
My eyes widened as articles about a disease or illness or sickness or whatever the article I was reading decided to call it began to populate. It sounded like something straight out of a movie.
"Perry", I covered my mouth and walked over to Perry, "Look," I handed her my phone.
Perry looked from me to the phone and gingerly took it from me. She began scrolling through the pages and looked back at me like I was dumb.
"So what? Its just like the flu." Perry shrugged and handed me the phone. The flu? Thats what she gathered?
"Keep reading," I crossed my arms and Perry went back to scrolling. After another minute or two she laughed, "This is fake. Some 'Walking Dead' fan probably made this up."
I shook my head, "Per, This is real. The CVC posted about it. They don't just post anything." My voice was shaky but I couldn't help it.
"Call your parents." Perry pushed the phone into my hands and I tilted my head at her. I forgot about them. My mom was a politician for the state and my father was neurologist researcher. They would be the first people to know.
"Okay. That's a good idea." I quickly pressed a few keys on my phone and held it up to my ear. The line rang and rang until finally she picked up.
"Sam?" My mom sighed in relief.
"Mom?" I said softly, trying not to scare her.
"It'll be okay Sammy. Everything is okay." She spoke softly and calmly and I blinked back tears.
"Mom, Is this real"? I asked quietly, turning away from Perry.
"No one is sure yet, Hon. It seems like it could be but who knows? Social media makes it hard to tell." My mom was trying to make it less scary for me. I could tell.
I nodded at her words and gripped the phone tighter, as if somehow it would keep her here with me.
"Your father and I are going to come get you. Stay-" The familiar beeping of a line dropping filled my ears. I felt the waterfall of tears begin to form.
I turned around to face Perry and inhaled, "The line went dead."
She gave me that familiar 'You're being dramatic' look and I glared at her.
"Students, Stay in your classroom. Lock and barricade the doors. Do not let anyone in." This time our principals voice rang over the intercom. He sounded panicked. Which is return made me mor panicked.
"What did your mom say?" Per asked in a hushed tone. I felt the guilt eating away at me. We wouldn't be able to bring her. My mom would never go for that.
"She's coming to get me. We are going to our cabin on the coast." I looked away from her and back to the door. Perry knew I couldn't take her. She knew how my family was.
"She should be here any minute then, right?" Perry asked and I nodded. "Okay. Lets go then." Per grabbed her bag and I followed behind her. Somehow my little 5'4 friend was braver then I was at nearly 5'11.
We slowly crept down the abandoned halls of our school. It was eerie being the only ones walking around in it. I wondered if our classmates were in the classroom and how long they would be in there.
I followed my best friend until we hit the lobby where we hid behind an open glass door. Neither of us could pry our eyes away from the sight in front of us. The usual front doors to our school were now barely recognizable.
Bloody handprints covered the glass, single shoes were sitting on the ground and belongings of students were beside them. It looked like something straight out of a horror film.
I felt my phone vibrate and I pulled it out of my pocket. I slid a shaky thumb up the screen and unlocked it. I felt relieved when i saw the text from my mom.
"She's here," I looked over at the black object blocking the view. My parents' SUV.
I quickly said my goodbye to Perry. I gave her the tightest hug possible and promised we'd see each other again soon.
I pushed myself to my feet and ran over to the front doors. I avoided pushing where the blood was and when I was out I avoided all of the belongings on the floor.
Who knows, maybe they're be back for them.
I pulled open the door on the SUV and hopped in. My parents both smiled at me and began checking me out in every way possible.
I smacked away their hands, "I am fine! I don't feel sick." I rolled my eyes and pointed at the steering wheel, "Can we just go?"
"Of course, Samantha. We just want to make sure you're safe." Dad gave me his usual smile and put the car into drive.
"Now, You weren't like bit or scratched?" Mom looked over her seat at me. I scoffed, "What? Thats a weird question."
"Just answer it, Sam. Were you bit or scratched?" Dad looked at me through the rearview.
"No." I sighed and looked at the window. Why were they even asking? It was no use in asking why. They never told me anything.
I hope this goes away quick.
