Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

Emily

I've been living with Aunt Cheryl and Theodore for over a year now. Theodore got accepted into the most pristine university for supernaturals. They have a program for those who want to enter the Hunters Association. To say he was excited would have been a major understatement. Aunt Cheryl through a big party. My parents as well as a lot of other coven witches attended.

They all congratulated Theo on entering the university and showed their excitement for him to become the next High Magus. For the time being, Aunt Cheryl wanted to keep me being the Magus heir a secret. She didn't want others to look at me with hostility as well as put a target on my back. Theo was more than happy to keep that target on his back because he said, and I quote, "A real Hunter Agent always has a target on his back."

That boy was unbelievable. Of course, my parents knew, and only a few select that Cheryl trusted. When they visited, my mom was so happy to see me as well as Ian. However, it didn't last long. He and Cheryl got into it when she called him a mangy mutt. I'm starting to wonder why they even dated in the first place.

After the party, my parents stayed for a few days. Believe it or not, Ian and Cheryl didn't kill each other. Even though, she complained about how the house reeked of wet dog, and also how she constantly hogged my mom. When they left, I was upset, but I knew I would see them again. Cheryl had spent the better part of that year teaching me everything there is to know. From basic general education to the politics of the supernatural and human world. I pretty much had a PhD in every subject. It was hard work and a lot of cramming, but I did it.

The reason for all this is that she plans to bestow me with the title of High Magus as soon as my trials were over. You see, in order for a witch or wizard to be initiated as the High Magus, they must undergo three trials that test their mind, heart, and will. Those three are the main qualities of becoming High Magus. If I fail even one of the trials, I won't become High Magus. The onyx stone around my neck is the proof of me being heir, but thankfully, no one knows that. To ordinary people, it is just a choker with a black, but to me and my family, it is proof of my heritage.

The reason is that inside this stone is my familiar. The High Magus is given a guardian to protect them and guide them. It could be an animal, a supernatural, or even a human. It is unknown. The stone is also supposed to lead me to the trials. The trials are a mystery. They are supposed to come to me, and this stone is supposed to slowly turn white when I pass all of them.

I finished all my knowledge. Now, I had to wait for the trials to start. I didn't know when they were going to happen or even if they were going to happen.

"Em?" A voice snaps me out of my thoughts.

I turn to see Theo giving me a worried look. "You ok?" he asked.

We were in the middle of packing his stuff up for the university in his van. I wanted to go with him to check out the campus and help him unpack. Since he was in the Hunters program, he had to arrive a month early. The school wasn't far from here, so Cheryl didn't need to worry about missing her son.

I was sitting in the trunk of the van playing with my choker when he sat beside me.

"Yeah, I'm fine," I muttered. "Just..."

"Worried about your trials?" he finished.

I nodded. "I don't know when they are going to happen, what's going TO happen, or even if I'm going to pass them."

I placed my head in my hands.

"Hey, hey," Theo said, placing a hand on my shoulder. "You've been preparing for this moment ever since you were little. Hell, I've never seen a more determined person. I know you can pass these trials like nobody's business."

I gazed up at him. His eyes showed me hope. I smiled and nodded. "You're right."

"I know I am," he gloated. "Truth is, I'm scared too. My father was a greater Hunter, and he always told me that it was important to protect those you loved. He died doing that, and I want to make him proud."

I placed my hand on his. "You'll be fine. You'll be the best Hunter the world has ever known."

"Thanks, sis," he grinned.

We gave each other a much-needed hug before Aunt Cherly came out. She helped us with the final preparations and saw us off. I sat in the passenger seat while the entire back was filled to the brim. I only brought a duffle bag since I decided to spend the night in his dorm. I wouldn't be able to experience college since I know everything already. Besides, I've been taking Theo's spotlight a lot lately, and I think he deserves to have college all to himself.

We made a few stops along the way. Fill the gas tank, get some food, and just to stretch our legs. The college was five hours away. However, since my aunt has a liking for teleportation, she can visit anytime. Theo was more practical. He wanted to experience the long drive, and see everything along the way. I respected that.

After a long five hours, we finally reached the campus. It was huge. Both humans and supernaturals attended this school, but only the humans who knew of the supernatural world could attend. Theo found a parking space, and we made our way to the registration. The line was long, but not too long. I opted to stay with the car until he got back. Everyone here was a part of the Hunters program. I leaned on the hood of the car waiting for Theo to come back when I sensed something. I don't know what it was, but it was warm like melted chocolate.

Yeah, I want chocolate.
