"And thus the world was changed forever. The Rains of Moon fell over creation, and dragons were born." -The Shattering
***
"Don't Worry, Silver, help is on its way," Dancer lied.
"If that's the case then why are we running?" Silverwing said in his usual sarcastic tone.
Dancer knew he saw right through her, even when she was merged with her Purple Horned Dragon, he could read her like a book. Truth was they were in a bad situation. Flying through jagged mountains and sharp rocks while five enemy dragons were literally hot on their tail. This mission was supposed to be easy.
Even as the size of a building she could feel her heart beating out of her chest. If they didn't make it out of here soon.. she paused, not letting that thought continue.
Communication was jammed, the magic that linked them with their commanders was severed. Help was not coming. They were alone, outnumbered and frankly, she was a little scared.
"Guess we have no choice but to fight." Silverwing said in her mind. Luckily the link between them was stable. Dragons can't speak so it would be difficult to communicate in the middle of a fight. Still, they had been flying together for a long time. If anyone could get them out of this mess, it was Silverwing.
"I'm with you Silver," Dancer said. Before they knew it two of the enemy dragons had caught up behind them. Bolts of blue magical energy flung towards Dancer from the sparkguns on the backs of the enemies. She felt a sharp pain in her back right foot. "I'm hit." She wanted to scream but her training wouldn't allow for it.
Silverwing lifted his body and widened his wings to slow himself down, allowing for the two enemy dragons to fly right past him. Before they could react he had already opened his mouth and let loose a large inferno melting nearby rocks and breaking much of the gear on the back of one of the dragons. It dropped from the sky.
Following his lead, Dancer whipped around and from her gear made a glyph of magical protection in front of her enormous body. The bolts from the sparkguns did nothing to the shield she had created and the dragon attempted to slow down, but it was too late. Dancer used her horns to stab the enemy right through, and her claws ripped his gear apart. Lacerated, that dragon fell from the sky.
"Good work, but there is still three more." Dancer said, entering a defensive formation.
"I like our odds, Dancer." Silverwing moved to her side, and the two of them waited for the rest so they could finish this.
"Maybe we should try to hide? If we wait behind these rocks they might just go past us."
"Hiding will only work for so long. I'd rather end this quickly so we can go home. Besides, its not really my style to wait and do nothing."
"There are only three of them left, right? If we go towards them, maybe we could catch them off guard?"
"There's the Dancer I remember." Silverwing rushed forward, his wings making a loud boom, carrying him to incredible speeds. Dancer followed right away. They had done this maneuver a few times before.
"This is going to be just like Northrun isn't it?"
"Probably, but let's hope this time only one of us loses flying privileges."
The two of them twisted and turned through the mountainsides and cliffs. Rocks shattered as they flew by them.
"The first sign of the enemy, I want you to give them everything you got. We will do as much damage as we can, then we will dive and evade. Hopefully that will confuse them long enough to call off the search. If they pursue, we will ambush them at the lower heights."
"I'm with you, Silver, but please be a little careful. Judy would kill me if I let you get hurt."
"I will take the blame. She is scarier than one of these dragons sometimes, But that's what I love about her."
Dancer caught a glimpse of something shine between two of the rocks.
"Dragon scales, up ahead. Its time." She steadied her wings into a slower speed to increase her accuracy. Silverwing did the same, but kept it in a faster formation.
Just then they saw two enemy dragons turn around the bend of the cliffs. Dancer unleashed her sparkguns. Channeling her magical energies through the gear and sending blue bolts directly toward the enemy. Her mouth opened and she let loose a large fireball. Her aim was true, the bolts surprised the other dragon for only a moment, but that was enough time for them to be engulfed in the fireball.
Silverwing used a similar attack, Dancer noticed, but his hit first, and his fireball was smaller. They had downed two dragons almost simultaneously.
"Where's the third one?" Dancer paused and looked around.
"They must have gotten lost in the cliffs, Let's get out of here before..agh!"
The sound of a loud bang pierced Dancer's ears. She felt the heat as though it was right next to her. Then she saw Silverwing fall. He must have gotten hit. Her wings folded in and she dove after him.
"Silver! Silver talk to me!" Their link might have gotten severed if the hit was bad enough. Silverwing was falling faster and faster, head pointed straight at the ground as though he was trying to dive on purpose.
"Silver! wake up!" Dancer was bigger and a bit stronger, but Silverwing was faster, that's why they were such a good team. However, right now, she would give anything for a burst of speed.
She felt a sting on her tail. Must have been a shot from a sparkgun. Dancer's instincts and training forced to her look behind her. The fifth enemy dragon was diving towards them, shooting from their sparkguns. It was large, red, and had a bright yellow scar from its face down the side of its long neck.
Snapping back, Dancer turned toward Silverwing and did the only thing she could think of. Her mouth opened and she let loose a stream of fire as close to her friend without actually touching him. Dancer used all of her breath that she had left before she saw his eyes shyly open.
"Silver! Up! Up!" Dancer opened her wings like sails stopping her descent. The scarred dragon dropped down past her. She pointed her body straight down and fired her sparkguns.
"I'm not letting you have all the fun!" Silverwing twisted his body and flew straight and up, gaining altitude. The scarred dragon continued to dive until it turned between the rocks.
"I've lost sight of him." Dancer scoped the ground and there was no shimmer, The shadows of the rocks hid the enemy dragon. She flew towards Silverwing who was gliding over the mountains. "Are you ok?"
"Just some burn marks on my back, whoever that was didn't hold back with their fireball."
"Who does that sound like?"
"I'm smaller than you, I got to give more to do more." Dancer knew that if they weren't merged to their dragons right now, he would have winked when he said that.
"Save it for Judy." Dancer allowed herself a breath of relief. Both of them had somehow managed to make it out fine. Silverwing's injury would mean he couldn't merge for a bit while his dragon recovered, but at least they could go home.
Suddenly bolts of blue stormed from below. Dancer felt them pierce her scales. She put her hand where she was hit and felt the wet touch of dragon blood.
"Dancer! You've been hit!" Silverwing flew under her and attempted to grab her with his back to the ground. Her body gave and she stopped flying, allowing Silverwing flip upwards and carry her. He would be too slow, she thought.
"Drop me."
"Never."
"Drop me or you'll die."
"Never."
Dancer tried to hold on to Silverwing. She felt the heat of dragon fire as he was trying to evade the enemies attacks.
"Dancer hold on, help is on the way."
"I was lying. You know that."
A large fireball flew towards them, Dancer felt Silverwing drop her. Falling to the ground, she saw him engulfed in black flames.
When she woke up she was already split from her dragon. she touched her belly out of instinct but of course she was fine. She was in a medical tent from their forward base. Nurses, and knights walked about. she could even hear some of the dragons in the air. Then it all came back.
"Where's Silver?" A nurse walked to her and debriefed the whole situation. When they lost their link to base, Commander Ygrad sent a rescue squadron after them. They saw Silverwing get hit. The enemy got away, they were just in time to catch her before she hit
the ground.
"And Silver, is he ok?" The nurse shook her head and Dancer couldn't control the tears.
