Chapter 8 - Lionhart Academy

On another beautiful morning, Mason looked out the window as he thought about his future plans. He knew his mother, she had probably already told several people about his awakening. He was probably going to get a lot of questions about being a Mage, even though he didn't feel like answering them.

'From the village brat, to the only awakened huh. Well I like the attention, so who cares if they're two-faced.' Mason thought.

"Mason!" Elena yelled from downstairs

"Yeah!?" Mason yelled back, but he didn't get an answer.

"What's up mom!?" Mason shouted even louder, being slightly annoyed.

"Fucking hell, fuck this shit. Every fucking time." Mason cursed in a low voice so his mother wouldn't hear him.

"Yes, mom? What's up?" The kid asked in the sweetest voice he could. Still annoyed that he had to come downstairs for the answer.

"Pass me the remote." Elena said while pointing to the chair.

Mason looked at the chair, and saw the remote laying on it. His mother, 5 meters away from the chair. Sitting comfortably on the sofa.

"Mom, is this the only reason you called me?" Mason said with veins popping out on his forehead.

"No dear, breakfast is ready. I was just kidding" Elena said while laughing out loud.

'Why is she like this, well anyways I get her delicious breakfast so I won't complain!'

After that hilarious joke from Elena, the two started eating. It was saturday, so Elena didn't have to go to work. She planned on having a discussion with her child today.

"How is life as an awakened?" Elena asked with a joking voice.

"It's pretty fun, I've been trying to level-up. I'll become strong and rich, so we can move to the capital and have a good life. I'm already level 9, so I'll get there eventually!" Mason said with a smile

'Level 9?!' Elena wasn't ignorant about mages, they were always on the news after all. She knew most newly awakened Mages take at least a month to get to level 10. Even the genius people would take 10 days!

"Mason, have you ever heard of Lionhart Academy?" Elena asked

Mason didn't know it, but it had academy in the name so he could guess what it was.

"It's a school right? You know kids from this village don't go to school, since it's too far to go by foot." Mason said while yawning.

"I know dear, it's not just any school. It's the top school for Mages in the country. Your father had some connections in the capital, so I could probably get you into the school. You want to go?"

This arrived in Masons mind as a bomb.

'My father? Number 1 school? Capital?'

He had many questions about it but he decided to leave them be, his mother would have told him if she wanted to. Besides that, he could go to the best school in the country? Of course he wanted to, getting stronger wouldn't be a hassle over there!

"Of course I want to go mom, but who would stay by your side. I know it isn't easy for you. Also, how would we get the money to enroll me there?" Mason asked worriedly

He knew his mother had a couple of friends in the village, but she didn't go out with them much. So usually, he is the one to always stay by her side whenever he could. Now, if he went to the capital, who would be the one to accompany his mother?

"You don't have to worry about me, dear. I'll be fine alone, didn't you say you wanted to be rich and powerful. Your chance is here, you should take it. I saved up enough money for your trip to the capital, and for the enrollment itself. If you have enough talent, the academy pays for it. Since you're already level 9, you should be just fine." Elena said, knowing her childs future was the most important.

Elena stood up from the table, and once again went to sit on the sofa. Leaving Mason alone to think about what he should do. It's not an easy decision, since the capital was a 3 day travel by car.

There wasn't any airplanes in this world, since the skies were the beasts' domain. Cars were also expensive, so even riding in one as a taxi would cost Elena a lot. Especially if it was 3 days of driving.

"Mom, I've made up my mind. I'll go to the academy, and I'll pay back all the money you spent on the trip in a month! I don't want to be a burden on our finances." Mason said, filled with determination.

"Good, I'll go make some calls. After I'm done you'll know when you can leave, in the time you have left here. Go say goodbye to your friends and such" Elena said with a chuckle, knowing Mason didn't have any friends."

Mason just rolled his eyes, he knew his mom liked to joke around with him.

"I was going to test put my power, but I guess that's going to get stalled until after the weekend. I want to stay with you for as much as I can now, mom." Mason said

Elena had a slight blush on her cheecks, as she thought back to the days her son was still a cute little kid. That was all in the past as Mason was now already grown up.

The mental state of the silver haired kid wasn't one of a 14 year old most of the time. Since he didn't have friends and only spoke with his mother, he started to adapt to her personality. He was still childish sometimes though, according to Elena.

'Lionhart Academy, huh. Sounds like a rich kid school, will I really be able to go there?' Mason asked himself, knowing he could only find out himself. He had been reading novels, so he knew about the stuck-up rich brats that he could find in school. Not that he ever cared about that sort of stuff.

'Hopefully this time I'll be able to make some friends, maybe even a girlfriend' Mason was back in his usual delusions, showing that he really was still childish sometimes.

After some time, Elena walked towards Mason. She had finished her phone call, and came to deliver the answer.

"The academy told me they would be testing new candidates next week, on sunday. That means if you want to be safe, you'll depart wednesday. This test is also the way they decide on who gets a scholarship, so you can't miss it." Elena said

"Alright mom, thank you for giving me this opportunity!" Mason said with a smile on his face.

"It's your own effort dear, now go train. I don't want to send you there for you to fail, after all."

Mason nodded as he walked towards his room, deciding to pack his bags now. He would probably forget if he didn't do it immediately.

'I'm really going, huh. It doesn't feel real.'

After finishing packing his bags, Mason went outside once again. His mother was right in saying he didn't have any friends, but he did have people to take revenge on. The wicked smile on his face told you that whatever he was planning, wasn't anything good.
