Watching his second brother get knocked down without being able to put up a decent fight enraged the third brother to no end.
How was it possible that his two brothers ended up unconscious at the hands of a person they looked down on?
He could not accept it. "How dare you harm my brothers?!... Are you tired of living?" He roared.
Max shrugged. "They attacked me, can't blame me for fighting back. Did you expect me to stand and get killed?"
The third brother was having none of Max's cockiness as his body shook uncontrollably from the anger he felt. "Good, very good. I hope you keep that smug look on your face when I'm done with you!"
He was done weaving hand seals and had already begun to circulate his magic.
Max did not respond, staying silent as he waited for him to complete his summoning.
The girl at the side felt the need to speak up at this point. "Stop him!... He is trying to summon his beast!!"
Max casually replied. "I know. I'm quite curious to see what it would be."
"This…" the girl was left stunned, same as the third brother.
They could not understand Max's thought process at all.
For them, a smart combatant would have already rushed to the third brother to stop him from summoning since it was clear he had no magic.
But this guy was looking forward to his opponent's summon, while not bothering to attempt to summon as well.
The girl remained mute while the third brother felt insulted.
Did this unassuming bumpkin take him for such a weakling that he did not bother to stop his summon?
Fine then, in that case, he would surely make him regret it!
The third brother brought his palms together. "It's already too late. You will regret looking down on me!"
Max did not respond, his eyes shining as he anticipated what was to come.
The next second and a spatial tunnel appeared behind the third brother followed by the emergence of a… mosquito?
Max almost collapsed.
"What the fuck is that!"
The third brother chuckled. "Haha, scared now, right?"
Max put up a brow. "Scared?... More like disappointed. How the hell do you become a Summoner and your contracted beast turns out to be a Servant class that is not much stronger than magic-enhanced humans?"
The third brother's jaw dropped. This guy had the nerve to look down on his summon!
"Do you know how much I had to go through before I got contracted as a Summoner?!" the third brother felt insulted.
Max face-palmed. For now, his hopes of bearing witness to an awesome summoned beast just like the ones he read about as a child, would have to wait.
First, Mentor with his frogs, and now this guy with his Mosquito… Where the hell are the dragons and phoenixes.
He glanced at the third brother's summon again.
It was a Mosquito twice the size of a normal human but that was about the only thing special about it. Everything else was normal and its energy fluctuations were so minuscule that Max wondered how it passed as a contracted beast.
Of course, his feelings were understandable.
In the world of magical creatures, they were separated into five different classes based on their constitution and cultivation, namely: Servant, Ruler, Lord, King, and Emperor.
Servant class magical creatures were not that different from magically enhanced humans based on their combat strength which made them barely passable as summoned beasts.
They could be used as mounts or the likes, but in battle… it was best to fight with bare hands.
Which made Max wonder why the third brother was so confident he would be defeated with the appearance of his… ahem, noble summon.
Max sighed. "Honestly, I'd prefer if you fought me yourself, your summon… is embarrassing."
The third brother's cheeks turned red as he exploded. "Shut your trap!... Buzz, get him!"
Max's jaw dropped.
The mosquito obliged as it dashed at Max, sharing its master's feelings as it directed killing intent at Max.
Its speed was so so, enough to cause normal magicians to buckle but Max… was no ordinary magician.
Just as the mosquito got within meters of him, he moved out of the way, an unassuming frog standing behind him.
The mosquito was moving too fast and so was unable to stop immediately.
Just as its eyes landed on the frog, the frog also spotted it as well. Suddenly, the frog communicated with it.
"You look good… but would look even better in my belly."
!!!
The mosquito sensed danger and immediately tried to turn and flee, unfortunately, it was too late.
The frog shot out its tongue, grabbing hold of the mosquito before it even got a chance to retreat.
Before the mosquito could cry out to its Summoner, it was swallowed whole.
With a hearty belch, the frog returned to normal, acting as though it did not just eat a creature several times its size.
The third brother was left speechless and the girl at the side had her eyes wide in shock.
Everything happened so quickly.
First, the mosquito attacked. Then, Max dodged and then the mosquito got swallowed by a frog.
If anyone else had spread such a tale, they would never have believed it but it happened before their eyes!
The third brother suddenly dropped to his knees, his attention still on the frog that swallowed his contracted summon.
Only he knew how much effort he put into becoming a Summoner. It allowed him to gain respect and benefits amongst those in his camp but now… all his hard work was gone and what's worse… it was swallowed by a freaking frog!
His fighting spirit was doused. As he glanced at Max still standing with a casual expression on his face, he trembled.
"No need to harm me."
Bam
The third brother knocked himself out leaving Max a bit surprised.
"Huh, that was unexpected."
In any case, he was done. Turning toward the girl still pressed on the rock, he walked up to her.
The girl instinctively backed away but again.. a rock blocked her path.
"I hope you don't mind, I've got a question for you," Max remarked.
The girl sized him up before asking. "Who are you?"
Max placed his palm on the back of his head as he flashed a smile. "Didn't you hear?... I'm a friendly Sage with curiosities."
