Chapter 9 - Knowing When to Run

"Why do you fight for these humans? They are so much less and you could be so powerful." Remis said in the language of the dead. One that only those from the other side would know. Savon knew it because he was born to it. Well his acolyte was.

"I will do what I want." He answered. "And you are in my way." He told him and swung the blade in his left hand at him. Remis blocked it by picking up a lamp but Savon hit him in the side with the blade in his right hand. Remis came forward and they crashed to the floor. One of Savon's blades was knocked loose and slid away from him.

"There is a great reward for you." Remis growled blood dripping from his mouth.

"You won't get it." Savon supplied slamming his head forward and into Remis's. Remis fell back and Savon was on him. He drove the blade he had into his abdomen and dug his nails into Remis's chest tearing at the flesh. His hands, more like claws at the moment. Savon's features twisting slightly. Becoming more animal like, even his canines were sharper in that moment.

Remis flipped Savon off of him and went at him pulling out the blade. Savon rolled as the blade came down. It missed and Remis came at him again but stopped as pain showed across his face. Behind him stood Kayla holding the other blade, it was stuck in his back. Thing about high level demons, they just didn't go down easy.

Savon took the moment to grab the blade that Remis had away from him. He swung it up and into his neck nearly taking his head completely off. Remis fell to his side not moving, but Savon knew that he was dead this time. He moved to get up, Kayla looking at him. For once he was glad for teamwork.

She turned and ran to where Neil had helped Todd up. He didn't look in such good shape. The smell of his human blood calling to Savon but he ignored it.

"We have to go!" Someone said coming into the room. "We're going to be in deep trouble in little bit here." Neil handed Todd off to the man that came to them, he turned to them.

"We have to check for others. Make sure that they made it out." He said.

"The only ones in the house are downstairs in the basement." Savon said.

"We'll check." Neil said and moved to leave the room. Savon made an annoyed sound and Kayla followed after grabbing her weapon from the floor.

They ran down one hall and came to the stairs, running down them finding no one. Just as they came to the next set of stairs that went down and into the living room. Cameron came running out of a room there and looked at them.

"We have to go." He said and Neil nodded going first and gesturing for him to follow. Kayla right before him. Cameron moved to follow, but Savon slammed his weapon down on the hand rail stopping his progress.

"What are you doing? We have to go." Cameron exclaimed. The others looked up.

"You are not Cameron." He answered.

"Of course I am, now let's go." Savon up and swung at Cameron who jumped back. Kayla and Neil both shouting for him to stop.

"He's not Cameron." Savon pointed his weapon. "Another possesses his body." Neil opened his mouth to say something but Cameron laughed. A deep evil laugh that wasn't him.

"Very good human." Cameron turned and darted for the two on the stairs just missing Savon's blade. He hit Kayla who went back and into Neil. The three of them ending up in a heap at the bottom. Savon was fast to follow. Cameron grabbed Neil dragging him back.

He pulled out a blade and moved to plunge it into Neil's chest. They were in the living room and from where Savon and Kayla stood it was easy to see the massive wound on Cameron's chest that had been hidden by his vest a moment before. Cameron could not be saved, his eyes were solid black, and his human soul was gone, they both knew it.

"Wait!" Neil shouted but it was to late Savon stepped forward and hit Cameron in the heart, killing the possessor demon in him. Cameron fell to the floor not moving. Neil got up anger on his face but they all froze as clapping came to them.

It was slow and condescending with how it was done. They looked at the man standing to the entrance to the living room. Neil moved back toward Kayla who recognized the man as one of the three that had passed her and Todd in the hall.

He had pitch black hair, was on the taller side and well muscled. He had yellow green eyes that he didn't take from Savon. It was more like Neil and Kayla didn't exist. They edged backward as did Savon. Which didn't give them any confidence. If Savon was backing up it couldn't be good.

"Twenty two years." He said, "Twenty two years it's taken to track you down." Savon's grip on his weapons was tight. This was not the person that he wanted to meet right now. He'd never felt panic before, but it was threatening him now.

"Astor." Savon felt compelled to say his name and the two behind him seemed to stop breathing at it. He could smell their sudden fear. Hear their heart rates pick up. Beating far faster than his was, he needed to stay calm and think.

"We can make this quick and easy."

"Go." Savon said over his shoulder to them, but he didn't take his eyes off of Astor. That would be a deadly mistake.

"No stay. I'd like an audience when I teach you a lesson long deserved." Astor moved forward, he was fast. Nearly a blur as he moved, but to Savon he could see his movements clear as day. Savon brought his arm up and got Astor right in the jaw with his elbow.

However they both went back and into the wall with the momentum that Astor had. It cracked with the force of the impact and Savon felt metal piping from inside the wall tear into his back.

'Let me full control. I need to protect you.' Savon felt the sharp jab in his mind to surrender himself completely to his acolyte side. It wasn't for any reason but to protect him. To allow him the savagery that he would need to survive.

Astor grabbed him and tossed him into the table there, cracking it as he slid off of it and to the floor.

'Yes.' Savon said and felt himself change instantly, the marking on his body grew hot and moved against his skin. His very skin crawled like it wanted to change. To become the very thing it was, and this human body was confining.

He stood and his eyes were a neon green, and glowing. The black ring around them stood out greatly. Both his lower and upper canines were sharp and pointed, his other teeth nearly the same but dulled a bit.

"You always were so promising." Astor said looking at him. The two humans were gone but that didn't matter to him. He had what he wanted right here. They'd all be dead soon, all be under his control now that his key was returned to him.

"I won't do what you want." He said. "You'll have to kill me, start over." Astor looked at him pulling a weapon of his own. A long sword to Savon's two shorter curved blades.

"Not an option anymore." He said and came forward. He was going to have to maim Savon badly to get him back. Savon could live through a lot and they both knew it. Short of losing his head nothing was going to kill him unless he could pull his acolyte from him. However Astor didn't think that a possibility anymore. He was no child and his acolyte was strongly bound to him.

It was quick and fierce with how they fought. Both scoring hits and drawing blood, Astor was surprised at Savon's skill. At his connection with his other half. He was a half breed, he should not be so strong, not so accomplished living among humans. But it made Astor eager, oh how easy it would be to bring the rest of his kind up with the power stored in Savon.

"You spend your time with humans it makes you weak." He said, meeting Savon's attack with jarring force. Savon felt the pain on his muscles and joints stopping the blows.

"I've learned to make my two halves coincide. I am not the weak one, you wanted one that was strong, advanced. It was why you killed all the others before me. No child of yours was going to be weak and pathetic." Savon was trying to decide his best way out. It wasn't looking so good and other demons had arrived. If he was talking, he had more time to think, and Astor was like the rest. He loved to gloat.

"You are a disappointment in your duties, not your abilities or skills." Savon just curled his lip at him.

"I am not property." He said swinging his blades and getting a hit on Astor's side sending blood across the sofa there.

"You are what I say you are, and you are my property! Stolen property that I will have returned even if it is in worse shape physically than when I found it." Astor came at him, this was the hardest fight he'd had in a while. He wasn't disappointed to know that his genetics had provided one such as Savon, but it was annoying at the same time.

Astor hit Savon and out through the French doors they went. They hit the rail there and flipped over it and into the garden area. They wrestled, fighting and drawing more blood. Savon grabbed a metal rod and hit Astor with everything he had. Sending his mind into his and demanding that he let Savon win.

It caught him off guard, the strength of the attack and his mental capacity for it. Astor went back and Savon came up, he struck him in the chest impaling him to the ground. Savon didn't wait. He grabbed his weapons and ran because the number of demons that were sweeping into the area would kill him before he'd get Astor.

Astor made a sound of rage, and grabbed the metal pole that was through his chest and into the ground below him. He had to snap it in half and pull himself up and off the pole. Then he was up and across the yard. His eyes pure yellow as he stood at the back of it near the river there, the son of a bitch!

The water was swift and harsh moving here. He'd have to jump in and that would put him at a disadvantage. Savon would be the first to get out and he couldn't know where. He'd have to run up and down the fucking river. Savon could move as fast as he did and with that bit of time he would have covered ground fast. The element of surprised was gone and the energy and blood from the wound would also handicap Astor in another fight.

Astor wasn't going to be tracking his scent, not with the water and even with him bleeding. He looked down at himself. He had multiple wounds, and was bleeding heavily the chest wound was bad and he needed blood. Savon had gotten away from him with a bit of luck and being underestimated. He was far better, their brief fight had told him that. But he'd run, Astor was sure he could best him had he been properly prepared. He'd gather numbers and go after him.

"I will have my property returned." He said turning and moving back up to the house. Savon was very comfortable with the talents he had, and there was more where that came from. Chances were he hadn't tapped into them yet. He was only thirty three, with the years he would grow more powerful. Astor couldn't let that happen. Couldn't let him grow more powerful outside of his control.

With a vow he moved back up to the house. He would get Savon back even if it killed him. He would be worth more than his weight in gold if he could get control of him. Hone his skills, all of them not just the ones that he knew that he had. He'd have complete control over the acolytes with Savon on his side he could see it now. There wouldn't be a loop hole for them to escape him. He needed to find him, and find him now.
