Eva buried her face in her knees, her body shaking terribly as she toiled to maintain her thoughts and senses in check. Everything seemed to be falling apart and she didn't have a clue on how to fix them. It suddenly felt as if life wasn't worth living anymore.
She started to feel dizzy and lightheaded as her chest constricted and she struggled to get enough air. She tried to take in deep breaths, but they came out in short, panicked gasps. She felt like she was suffocating, and her mind began to race with the worst-case scenarios.
'He left you...'
I'm alone.
She thought about yelling for help, but then who would hear her? Kai had gone to the Court to handle some matters related to increasing the number of soldiers while Sebastian was still on his mission. Gwen was too far away to hear her while Theo...
She didn't have a clue as to where he was and why he left the door shut.
She thought about breaking the door down, but she didn't know enough about her powers. The only thing she knew she could be able to do was applying Kai's techniques which were what had motivated her to speak to Theo. If she knew that this would happen, she would've never attempted to brag and lie out loud.
She felt helpless and trapped, and her panic only grew as the minutes ticked by.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she struggled to breathe and then sobs echoed through the empty room which started resembling her room back in Isabella's castle. She felt like she was losing control, and she didn't know how to handle the overwhelming fear and dread without begging somebody silently in her mind for help.
"Eva!"
'Don't listen to them...'
"Are you in there?"
She gasped out, droplets of water streaming down her face as she clutched at the wall to lift herself up on her quaking legs. Parting open her lips to answer back, she realized that only a small sigh escaped her mouth. Her mouth felt too parched as she licked her dry lips and attempted again.
"Birdy I'm sorry— just please tell me that you're okay!"
A voice.
'Ignore it.'
His voice...
Eva's eyes darted around, trying to spot the location from where that warm, soothing tone arrived, and then her eyes landed on the door. It was shrouded in darkness, the lights in the room on but only a few.
She hadn't spotted candles anywhere in Eden, only weird switches which she flicked to open the light. Eva found it fascinating and magical, and each time she looked up at them in a daze she always felt eyes staring straight at her.
It was twilight outside, night hovering over the sky and she took a feeble step toward the door to get closer.
"Please answer... Please." he sounded so weak and helpless, Eva felt something inside her die down at the vulnerability in his voice.
"Eva knock something or make some noise if you aren't able to speak." Gwen's voice entered her ears and she swallowed painfully.
'You should never have been born...'
Her parent's dead faces surfaced in front of her like a faint memory and the only thing that was holding her from falling apart was the certainty that he was standing out there. Just a few feet away. All she needed to do, was reply back so they could break her out.
Her teeth chattered due to the cold that had seeped in because of the dead fireplace. Darkness had loomed over the sky and she shivered, yearning for some sort of warmth to hold her forever.
She wasn't strong...
'Your fault...'
"Listen to me because I know you're listening. You managed to get out of that hell using your own mind and strength. You stayed alive, you can't let that go in vain. I'm standing right out here but something's blocking me from using my powers."
Eva blew out a small breath from her dry lips and weakly knocked her hand against the nearby wall as hard as she could. It echoed off in her ears and she was certain it was loud enough that he and Gwen would've managed to hear it.
"Oh thank god you didn't black out." she heard Gwen gasp out but what she wanted to hear desperately right now, was his voice.
"Okay listen to my voice, you haven't figured out your powers yet, only that you can use them when you're panicked which you are now. Try directing that toward the door to break it open." Theo said, his tone reflecting how serious and worried he was feeling outside that barrier that divided them both internally and externally.
But what he didn't know was that she didn't feel much panicked. She was scared and Eva knew that both in and out. She was afraid of being lost in a world where nobody recognized her. A meaningless world where all her friends were nonexistent.
A world that didn't consist of him...
That place was currently the voices in her head that continued to torment her the second she thought something promising. Stumbling toward the entrance, she placed her hands on the door and breathed out shakily, noticing that she could see her breath coming out in the form of mist.
"I'm right here. Direct all your fear and panic toward the door. You'll be fine." she almost sobbed out again in relief that he wasn't the one shut her inside.
You were wrong...
'You don't know anything!'
Eva closed her eyes, unable to bear the sight of watching her trembling hands for too long. As she struggled to calm herself down in order to focus, she suddenly felt a surge of energy coursing through her body. She could feel the power pulsating inside of her, threatening to burst out.
She was terrified of what would happen if she lost control of her powers, but that was what she wanted to happen. Only a wave of powerful energy could break open that door if not even Theo's power could damage it.
So she delved into her mind, searching for some sort of string to pull or a light switch she could flick that would just let her chaos flow free from inside her.
She needed to let its restraints fall...
That was the only way she could be free.
