Three Days Later,
Eva stared at herself in the mirror and wasn't able to recognize the girl looking back at her. Dark circles surrounded her eyes and her lips were pale and chapped even after she drank two glasses of water after waking up.
As soon as her eyes had opened, she grabbed a jug and drained it fully. There was no one in her room so she had gone to the bathroom where she now stood. Her appearance looked as if she was about to die any second. Her body looked visibly thin and her hands didn't stop trembling. She wondered if she had gotten hand tremors but then again, what was the cause of all this?
Her mother's death.
Her sister's death.
And losing him forever.
Eva didn't expect Theodore to come and save her. She knew how hard it would be to locate her, even for him. She was sure that if her location was revealed, he would be here within an hour to bring her back. There was a hint of doubt in her heart but she pushed it away. There still had to be one person she could trust.
As she went back to sit on the bed, she stared blankly at the floor and tried to remember her last memories with her mother and sister before they died. The last time she had seen her mother was at the ball and her sister...
Diana had told her that Vanessa was killed at the young age of ten. Her sister's life had been destroyed and that too, all because of her. Because she knew they wanted something crucial from her and that's why the Queen was keeping her here.
Her gaze drifted off to her hands and she could see her veins more clearly than ever. She gripped her hands together to stop them from trembling and let out a shaky breath.
As she looked around with glossy eyes, Eva noticed that everything that was previously in the room had been removed. Only a small mirror was left that could be considered dangerous if she tried to cut herself with it which Eva decided not to unless it became unbearable. She smiled wearily as a tear escaped its cage and slid down to her pale cheek and down her neck.
She was officially trapped forever, this time with no way of escape. She couldn't get out unless somebody opened the door from outside and let her out. But there was no one left...
Her lower lip trembled as she clenched her hands into fists. No, she still had to take her revenge. She needed to kill that woman named Diana who was the reason for her anguish and pain. The one who had murdered her sister and stolen her life away from her. The one who killed her mother and told it to Eva with a bright smile.
Good, her heart muttered and for the first time, her brain agreed with it. Anger is a hundred times better than these tears and heartache.
The door creaked open and Eva raised her head to see Stanley— no, Alastor coming towards her with shock which soon transformed into relief and a smile.
"You're finally awake? Thank god!" he exclaimed and wrapped his arms around her stiff body. Eva made no move to return his embrace and waited until he got his hands off her.
Sensing no response from her, Alastor moved away with an awkward grin and scratched his eyebrow.
"How long was I out?" she asked without looking up.
"Three days."
If she was surprised, Eva didn't let it show on her face. Three days!? She had been sleeping for more than forty-eight hours? No wonder her body felt weak and her stomach ached more than ever.
"I'll ask the maid to bring some food," he spoke and was about to leave when Eva opened her mouth again.
"Why are you doing this?"
He twisted his neck around and looked down at the ground, not knowing what to say.
"He is bad for you." and they both knew who 'he' was. "I am just trying to keep you safe and doing what's best for you."
Eva bit her lip and chuckled, her eyes getting watery again. "Don't I have a say in what's best for me? You know, apart from all the terrible things Theo did," she watched as his eyes narrowed when she called him by his nickname. "He never trapped me inside a room. He showed me new things and I felt safe around him."
"You don't feel safe around me?" he gritted out, but Eva spotted a hint of sadness in his voice.
"I used to," she spoke and for the first time since he entered, she looked up at him. "I can't feel safe when you're with the woman who killed my mother and sister and destroyed my happiness."
"No!" he declined her accusation and took a step forward. "I promise that I'm not siding with her. I can't bear her presence around me, Eva, I swear it! After we're married— "
"What?" she asked, her mouth dropping open as she saw his serious expression turn into a shocked one and then remorseful.
"I— I'm sorry. The Queen was supposed to tell you that. She will tell you herself." he interrupted her when she parted her lips to speak. "I'll ask one of the maids to send food for you, and then the Queen might come to pay a visit."
Eva didn't raise her head to look at him as he turned away. She wasn't in the mood to listen to his excuses, she hadn't mourned her family enough to listen to anybody's reasoning. She didn't want to lash out at him so the best thing to do was keep her mouth shut, she said to herself.
Just as he was about to open the door, Alastor said without turning around, "What if he was tricking you? Making you think that you were safe and then using you for his own ambitions?"
Eva smiled weakly at his back and shook her head as another tear fell to join his companion.
"My first night there, Diana told me that he was a monster. I asked him about it, but he replied that sometimes a monster is not a beast like everybody portrays him to be." she paused and brushed away her tears that continued falling on her cheeks like raindrops.
"When is a monster not a monster?" asked Alastor in a confused tone and Eva chuckled weakly, remembering his words clearly in her mind.
"Oh, when you love it."
