Chapter 12 - First Job (Part III)

"I've given you everything. Please, release us!" The borrower pleaded desperately.

"Dad..."

"Greg..." Both the mother and son couldn't contain their sorrow. As I showed no mercy towards the father, those around us couldn't help but overhear our conversation.

"Let you go? I can't do that. After all, I'm not the only one interested in your money." Even if I had the option to release him, I had no intention of doing so.

"Since you're out of money, I have a suggestion that could earn us a quick buck. You may be older, but I'm sure your organs could fetch a high price. And if that's not enough, I'm certain your wife and son would also contribute." My harsh words weighed heavily on them.

Their son tightly shut his eyes and gritted his teeth, his anger evident. Meanwhile, the mother appeared dizzy and on the verge of fainting at the terrifying prospect of organ sales.

"Well, aside from selling your organs, there are wealthy individuals with peculiar tastes," I remarked, shifting my gaze between the mother and her son.

In my world, there were certainly individuals willing to pay a substantial amount for someone's wife, especially if she remained attractive in her forties. The concept of "MILF" was quite popular.

Regarding the son, wealthy people often had unique and unconventional interests. Undoubtedly, he could be valuable to someone with such preferences.

"Please... Please show us mercy. This is all on me. I will do anything. Just leave my family alone." I was surprised he had this in him for someone with a gambling addiction.

His tears fell, and he could only beg me to end this nightmare. Deep down, he knew his begging wouldn't work, but it was his last and only resort.

"Enough!" Someone else who was spectating intervened.

"You're causing a disturbance in public, and this airport doesn't tolerate it," she admonished as she approached me, her expression filled with disdain.

"Fine, I have no problem leaving. However, I intend to take those three individuals with me." The girl wasn't dressed in airport personnel attire, so it was likely she had her own motivations for intervening.

She let out a mild expression of annoyance, confirming my earlier judgment that a strong sense of justice didn't necessarily drive her but rather irritation at my presence.

"Can't you let the family go? I'm sure what they did could be forgiven," another individual chimed in, this time a rather typical-looking guy.

"Let them go? This family of four owes three million dollars. I would be willing to release them if they could provide that amount right now. And since you're so eager to interfere, how about you cover their debt?" Holmes had initially borrowed three million, but the amount had likely increased with the typical high interest rates associated with loan firms.

"..."

The room fell into a hushed silence as they all grasped the enormity of the debt. For most, coming up with four million seemed impossible.

"That's five million. Can you drop this now?" To my astonishment, the man had given me even more than I had anticipated.

"Are you certain you want to pay for them? The man in front of you requested a three million loan to fuel his gambling addiction. He's not exactly the wisest decision-maker," I taunted him playfully.

"Just consider it a generous gesture," he replied nonchalantly, not delving into the details.

"Very well, my business with the family is concluded. Once you return the money, the contract will be null and void."

With our business concluded, there was no need to stick around. The atmosphere here wasn't welcoming, given the morally questionable nature of the work I was involved in. Ripping off the contract at this moment would be unwise, as the man before me could easily reclaim the money. It was time to leave the airport and put this job behind us.

The man who gave me the money appeared indifferent to its value. I passed on four million to Jessica, retaining a million for myself.

My role was simply to settle the person's debt. Given her apparent wealth, I doubt she'd notice the million I held onto.

Now that I've finished this assignment, I understand the appeal of working in this sector.

This task felt like an easy monetary opportunity. Lend money and receive a higher return. It's a straightforward venture, albeit with some questionable aspects.

"Wasn't it impressive for a first attempt?" She hinted playfully, inquiring about my first assignment.

"I felt it was a bit underwhelming, possibly because I was interrupted." I might have earned more credits if given more time.

"Did I meet your expectations?" My completion of the task depended on Jessica's assessment of my performance.

With a million dollars now in my possession from that man, this job isn't essential anymore. It might have garnered more points, but it wasn't crucial.

"For a rookie, you performed decently. There were several errors, yet they're correctable. One main issue is your unfamiliarity with global pricing. But that will improve with experience." She paused after offering her feedback and remained silent.

"What other areas do I need to improve in?" I hoped she'd lay out all the issues now so I could address them before they became bigger problems.

"To begin with, you drew too much attention. Some folks tend to play the hero and might resort to unnecessary force. It's in your best interest to keep such dealings away from public eyes."

"Additionally, control that sadistic streak of yours. It was evident you found pleasure in others' misfortunes. Even if they're at fault, it casts a shadow on you." I hadn't realized my smirk was so obvious. Moving forward, I resolved to mask my emotions better. After providing her insights, she smiled, and we hailed a taxi for our return.

The initial job netted me a thousand points. Even though it was interrupted unexpectedly, these points edged me closer to the prowess I sought.
