Chapter 6 - The Howl In The Wind

Sofia looked around the woods, going deeper and deeper into the darkness of the woods. She knew this was the worst idea she had ever come up with, but what else could she possibly do right now. Sofia wanted to cry because her secret was made known to everyone. Now she was out of medicine, and no one believed Sofia about her illness. It was an uncommon thing to have stress-induced seizures, but she had it.

The air was warm, and the moon was full, lighting her way enough that she didn't trip over too many things. Sofia sat down on a fallen log and thought hard about her life. Sofia's life was dull, and she had no choice but to keep it that way. At least she was alone now, and she wouldn't be too stressed to induce a seizure.

"Sofia?!" Tom hollered as he made his way into threw the thick woods.

"Sofia!" Tom hollered again, but this time he was close enough to Sofia that she heard him.

She sighed and didn't answer him right away. Sofia was still upset at him, and she couldn't believe that he had made up how he liked her. She knew it was a lie, but he did try to protect her from Casey. Sofia was trying not to think about that or how Casey had made fun of her. Even Roy got mad at her, which made her smile a bit. Her friends did come to her aid when she needed it the most. Being out here by herself must have worried them.

"Sofia, I have been calling your name for ages! Everyone went looking for you; you shouldn't be out in the woods by yourself. There are wolves, and you can get lost out here and die, for crying out loud! Are you at least alright?" he asked, making her shrug.

"Just like high school all over again. You also lied about liking me because that was what Casey wanted to hear. I must say you're a good actor," Sofia informed as he stood by her.

"I didn't lie about what I said to her," Tom insisted, but Sofia chuckled.

"Sure you didn't, then I'm a superhero with laser eyes," Sofia started as she crossed her arms, annoyed.

"Sofia, you are a fantastic person to me. I do care about you a lot, and I know I don't show it or didn't show it at all to you, but I never felt like I could have a decent relationship with a girl. You are honest and kind; your artwork is beautiful, and I know you look younger than you are. I know the looks I will get from dating you, but I don't care about that. I care about if you are happy. I will have a lot of explaining to do when I get home.

My parents sent me here not only to get a job but to ensure I didn't get an STD over the summer. I know I'm not the best guy, but I would like it if you gave me a chance Sofia," he explained softly.

"Tom, why? Why do you like me? I'm not like other girls; I have medical issues that can kill me," she informed.

"You are everything I wish I were and more, kind, funny, thoughtful; I'm not known for that. I wish I were, though; growing up in London; I got into the wrong crowd. Sleeping around was one of the things we did, and honestly, I regret it. I have also never really been so honest with myself or others. It's complex and different, and I wouldn't say I like it much, but it's a good start," he explained with a weary smile.

"It is a good start, so most of my teeth are implants. I only have three teeth that are mine due to a calcium deficiency. It runs in the family, but I got it the worst of my two younger sisters. I don't tell people about it because they don't believe me, like with my seizures," she sighed.

"That is cool! You could be a pirate but cooler and also a lady," he said, making her chuckle.

"Dude, there were real female pirates out there," she smiled.

"Really?! Huh, I never knew. Let's get out of here, and I will try my best to make sure you stay calm," He smiled.

"Fine, okay," she smiled as he got up and held out his hand for her to grab.

"You never said if we were a couple or not," he said as she smirked.

"Well, you like my fake teeth, so I didn't scare you away. I guess we can be a couple, but I don't sleep with someone on the first date or the seventh either," she commented.

"Okay, so two threw six is okay then?" he joked.

"Tom!" she said, shocked.

"Just kidding. How about whenever you feel up to it?" he asked.

"Now, That's more like it," she smiled as she grabbed his hand, and they started to head out of the woods.

"Sofia!?" Rose asked as Maxwell held the shotgun in his hands.

Everyone was now trained on how to use it even though Maxwell was very uncomfortable holding it; he knew firsthand there were wolves and hunters out there.

"Sofia?!" Rose yelled, holding the flashlight in her hand.

It was dark out in the thick woods of the camp. The shadows of the trees were making shadows that didn't look human and making the forest scarier than when the sun's warm rays lit it. The nocturnal birds were making their sounds, and small animals scurried along the ground, making bushes rustle. It made the pair very jumpy and but they were both worried that Sofia was going to have a seizure out in the middle of the woods and be found dead. Neither one wanted that, especially now since Tom outed himself to make sure her secret was never told.

"Rose?!" Tom yelled, hearing her faint voice off in the distance.

"We're here! Stay there! We will find you!" Max yelled as they started to call back to each other.

But then there was a growl. It was low and quiet but loud enough for Maxwell to hear it. He stopped dead in his tracks and turned around quickly. There was nothing there, but he felt eyes staring at him into his very soul.

"Rose, run!" Maxwell said as she looked at him, confused.

"Max, what's wrong?" Rose asked as he heard another growl making her back up.

"Max backs up slowly," she said softly as he started walking backward.

He broke a twig, and a massive animal tackled Max to the ground. The creature started ripping him apart, making max scream in lain and agony. Without thinking, Rose grabbed a large stick and hit the monster with it, but it hit her arm. There was a howl in the distance, making it run away and leaving the two bloody and terrified.

"Max! Oh my God! Tom! Somebody help us!" she screamed as she tried to stop the bleeding, but there was so much blood. Could they even save him now?
