When I wake up, I realize that I'm in my bedroom. My big ass dragon body hangs off parts of my bed as Pops does something on his phone. When I try to move, he notices me only to stop me. "Don't move, we don't know how bad you are," he says with a cautionary tone I've rarely heard from him. Normally he's a wacky jokester and does dangerous stuff. He has only used that tone when it was really serious. I make a small huffing noise in response, and he chuckles.
"Yeah, it sucks. I don't know if you should change back yet, that wing looks torn up a bit along with your leg and chest." I didn't notice the bandages around my left leg, chest, and wing. He seems to notice my confusion and tells me. "We barely got you in here, but you sort of helped while you were unconscious. You climbed into bed and didn't move for the last day." I let out a bigger huff.
A day!! I missed school! How did Lizzy get to school?! "Relax, we told the school you were sick, and Olivia took Lizzy to school this morning. Dani, Riley, and Jacks got the full explanation and we had to explain to Bree why there was a dragon in the back trails," he chuckles at the last part. "I'll get Olivia and your dad to see if they can confirm whether you should change or not." I nod and Pops leaves my room. I sigh and lay my head on my pillow as my tail flops off my bed.
The next thing I know Sarah is barking from the door while Olivia, Dad, Bree, and Pops come into my room. "Should he change back?" Pops looks at Dad.
"Can you turn back?" Dad looks at me with a hint of worry in his eyes, so I focus on changing back and feel my bones start to shift before an overwhelming pain shoots through my wing to my back, causing me to let out a roar of pain.
That's not normal. There's normally a bit of pain and I end up sore for an hour or two but it hasn't been that painful since the first time I tried to stop a change after getting too angry.
"Alright, let's not do that!" Olivia says as they all uncover their ears. I let my weight fall onto the bed so I don't cause any more pain before Dad speaks.
"Yeah, I think another day or two of rest before trying that again might do something. Let yourself heal before doing too much."
"What about school?" Olivia looks at our dads.
"We'll make sure the school thinks he's out sick for the rest of the week," Pops says. I huff, trying to ask about who's going to take Lizzy to and from school.
"We can't understand you," Olivia points out the obvious.
I give her a look, trying to say, "No shit," but Bree buts in.
"Can you write in this form?" she asks. I shake my head. "You can tap your phone right?" I nod this time.
"Oh, you can type what you want to say!" Olivia realizes and runs to grab my phone. She gets it to the notes app and sets it next to my front right claw.
I tap a single letter at a time and use terrible grammar to say, "Wat bout Liz"
"Oh, I can pick her up again. And take her home," Olivia offers before adding, "And Riley and Jacks said they're coming over when school gets out. Dani said she's still helping her brother." I nod slightly.
"You should keep resting. I'll get you some food and water," Dad leaves to grab it.
"When you're able to change back you're gonna have to explain what actually happened," Pops says and Olivia nods.
"Yeah, all we know is that Sarah came barking and we followed her to find you blacking out," Bree adds.
"That reminds me, I grabbed a few of your scales. The ones that fell off," Olivia points to my dresser where half a dozen of my black scales shine against the sunlight gleaming inside through my window. I nod and lay my head back down sadly. I'm missing school which means I'm gonna have to catch up when I get back. I can't ride my motorcycle or give Lizzy her helmet. What about this weekend? I was going to take everyone up to the mountain to relax.
"I see that look," Olivia states. "You'll be back to school and your friends by Monday. You always heal fast."
I nod in response to her assuring tone. I would smile but that always looks creepy in this form. Olivia, Bree, and Pops all give me reassuring smiles before leaving while Dad comes back in with a glass of water and what looks like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
"Make sure to eat," Dad smiles and plants a typical dad kiss on my head, right above my eyes. I nod and he leaves me to eat. After doing my best not to make a mess while I eat and drink I lay back. Sarah comes into my room and somehow manages to find an empty spot on my pillow and we both fall asleep.
