"Yes, and offer to marry my grandson in return for an opportunity to complete your studies."
Hearing this, Assistant Jin, who was seated in the front passenger seat of the car listening to his old master and the lady talk, was also bewildered.
This evening, when his old master told him to get a car and drive to the place where the young lady who saved him worked, he was taken aback. Even more surprising was when his old master told him to invite her into the car because he wanted to speak with her personally.
On several occasions, even the president requested to meet and speak with his old master, but he was never granted his request. However, now his old master himself has come all the way here to talk to an naive young lady.
Then, when he overheard his old master say that he wanted to reward the young lady for her kindness, that's when he somewhat began to comprehend his old master's actions. He assumed that his old master might've wanted to personally thank his life saver and would reward her with money or something, only to be befuddled by his next words (more like an offer).
…
'What offer? What marriage? To what grandson?'
For a good few minutes, Amayah's mind went blank, unable to comprehend or think of anything.
As she awoke from her stupor, she politely inquired, "I'm sorry, sir, but I think I misheard you. Could you please come again?"
Her reaction did not surprise Old Master Emerson in the least. When he made this offer to her, he had anticipated something like this. He replied calmly, "Yes, you heard me correctly, young lady. I'd like you to marry my grandson in exchange for the opportunity to finish your education at no cost to you."
Getting the confirmation again, she just didn't even know what to think anymore.
'Like what is this for real. And what is with that bizarre offer to marry his grandson? How did me saving him turn into me marrying his grandson?'
She again tried to refuse the old man again, saying, "I understand your concern for your grandson, sir, but this is not possible. How could a nobody like me marry your grandson and we don't even know each other, more or less have meet each other."
"I am the Patriarch of the Emerson family, and my grandson is Nolan Emerson."
Hearing this, she was struck dumb. Who did not know the infamous Emerson family? Even the president had to bow down in front of them. As for Nolan Emerson...
This name rang a bell in her head as soon as she heard it, and she remembered who he was. She didn't know much about all of these upper-class families, but she remembered this name, Nolan Emerson, because it had some interesting information associated with it:
Nolan Emerson, the only legitimate heir and the former CEO of the Emerson Group, got into an accident two years ago, leaving him blind in both eyes.
She just didn't get why this mysterious Emerson Family's patriarch would want her to be his granddaughter-in-law. They had an abundant amount of wealth that they themselves didn't know how much it was. He could find any other girl to marry his grandson and they would happily agree to it.
She gave another shot at denying the old man. "Even if I accept your offer, I will be unable to marry your grandson because I have not yet reached the age of majority, more or less the legal age for marriage."
Old Master Emerson was surprised at her maturity, which was beyond that of her age. She could still hold herself together, stay calm, and talk things out without losing her temper with him.
"You have no other family members around who could help you complete your education, and if you accept this offer, the Emerson family will pay all of your personal and educational expenses in return. And if we talk about your age, don't worry about that. As long as you agree to the offer, everything else will be taken care of easily. I would not like to force my future granddaughter-in-law."
She clearly understood the hidden threat behind the old man's words. How could she forget that this was the patriarch of the powerful Emerson family. He could do anything with his power and influence, even if the other party did not agree. She was also aware that if she didn't accept this offer, it would be hard for her to complete her education. Even though she worked many small part-time jobs, she was barely making ends meet, and it was best not to bring up the subject of her upcoming college expenses. Once college starts, she needs to focus her attention on studies, which will leave no time for her to work part-time and earn her expenses at all. Even though this old man did not speak much, every word had a point that she was unable to deny. She had no other choice, nor words left to counterattack with. She did not want to give up on her studies.
Feeling helpless she took a long deep breath to build her courage, and agreed.
"Ok, but I don't know how to take care of a disabled person."
Old Master Emerson was so happy that she accepted his offer. Not wanting her to change her mind again, he instantly sealed the deal.
"There'll be no need for that; there are many servants to help."
Just as they finished their long talk, Assistant Jin's voice rang out from the front seat, "Ms. Young, we've arrived at your residence."
Amayah looked outside the window and realized that it was already dark, and at some point while they were talking, the car had already left the bakery and was on its way back to her home to drop her off.
Thanking everyone, just as she got out of the car, it sped off and disappeared into the night. Looking up at the night sky, closing her eyes, she took in a deep breath, feeling the peace of nature, praying that the decision she made was right.
