Chapter 9 - Their First Encounter

Two days had passed, and Amayah was now inside a luxurious car, heading towards the place that was supposed to be her new home.

Yesterday, she signed the marriage contract that Assistant Jin brought to her home personally. He even had a lawyer on toes just in case she didn't understand anything or wanted to add any clause to the contract. She was surprised at how meticulous they were.

She opened the folder and started reading immediately from the first page. Although seeing all of the legal jargon used in the contract made her head spin, she read it anyway. Thanks to the kind lawyer who did his job diligently, she understood all of the contract's main points that were highlighted in bold.

The contract basically stated that she were to marry Nolan Emerson and in return the Emerson Family would take care of her financially.

When she reached the last page of the contract, it was already signed with the name Nolan Emerson written before the signature.

Amayah was strangely calm during the whole process. There was even a small smile on the corner of her lips. It was not a joke at all. The document almost looked like it was some sort of highly classified document.

She stared at the signature of her soon-to-be husband for a good few moments, then lifted the pen and signed her name with a flurry in the blank space below.

Back in the car,

Staring at the copy of the contract in her lap, she gave a bitter smile. She knew she had no other way than to sign this document if she wanted to survive in this cruel world and improve her future for the better. She couldn't believe she was married to a man she had never even met before.

The car soon came to a stop, and the driver turned to her and announced, "We're here, miss."

By the time they reached there, it was already dark at the Emerson family mansion in the City A.

Someone opened the door for her from the outside. As soon as she got out of the car, she was astounded by the beautiful and magnificent sight in front of her. It was basically a three-story hillside mansion. The mansion's bright lights shone brightly in the dark night, making it look even more majestic.

Assistant Jin approached her and led her towards the entrance. As they walked closer, she noticed all the maids lined up on each side of the entrance with their heads bowed to welcome her. They walked past the maids and into the mansion.

She did not admire the inside of the mansion anymore as they walked up to the second floor. Her heart started to pick up pace, beating loudly inside her ribcage. Assistant Jin took his leave from the stairs after gesturing to her to go on. She turned her head and skimmed through the quiet passage. It was really deserted on this floor, with no maids around. She took a deep breath and walked forward, stopping in front of a particular door.

In the study,

There was an old man standing near the window, his back facing the door. Two crisp knocks echoed in the quiet room, followed by the sound of a door cracking open. Assistant Jin entered the study and found his old master looking at the night scenery outside the window, seemingly unaffected.

"I've led young miss to the room, old master," he reported to his old master.

He just received a slight nod from the old man as an affirmation.

"Old master, may I ask you something?"

He was answered with silence, understanding that the silence meant yes, he went on to ask, "Why do you choose her out of all the young ladies to marry our young master?"

Actually, this question had been bugging his mind ever since that day in the car when his old master discussed the offer to marry his grandson in return for an opportunity to complete her education. He couldn't understand why his old master chose this young lady over all the other capable young ladies from prominent families.

His question was followed by more silence before Old Master Emerson finally turned around to face Assistant Jin and answered perfunctorily, "Trust my decision, Jin. You will understand when the time comes."

Old Master Emerson knew that there was something special about the young lady the first time he saw her in the CCTV footage of the hospital. If someone else was in her shoes, they might have chosen not to save him in fear of getting into trouble, but she brought him all the way to the hospital, even giving the police her statement without any hesitation. Despite the difficulties that life threw at her at such a young age, she didn't lose her kindness. When he met her in person for the first time outside the bakery, he could clearly see the innocence in her eyes. She was a courageous and determined girl who would never easily give up, which is exactly what was needed for his grandson.

Heaving a long breath, he turned back to the window. She was the last hope he had.

On the second floor,

She knocked on the door twice before opening it. As soon as she entered, before she could assess the situation in the room, a cup was hurled in her direction.

"Get out!" A voice roared furiously.

Instinctively, Amayah dodged, but the cup would've missed her regardless. It hit the door behind her and shattered into pieces.

Looking up, she found a stunningly handsome man seated at the foot of the bed, glaring at her.

So this was her new husband, whom she'd been contractually married to, Nolan Emerson.

Two years ago, the CEO of the Emerson Group, Nolan Emerson, got into a car accident. Although he survived, it left him blind in both eyes.

All the high-society debutantes, fearful of his fierce temper, had steered clear of him.

After seeing the 'warm' welcome she received, indeed, the rumors of him being the devil incarnate were proven to be true. But who was to blame for her extremely bad luck, Amayah mused sardonically.
