Chereads / The Hound of Abaron / Chapter 28 - Chapter 28

Chapter 28 - Chapter 28

Neither Gunner nor Apollo felt the need to stand around the city street. After they were clear of the hell hounds they both quickly took to running down the street to get far enough away they felt the hell hounds could not easily find them if they brought reinforcements from their pack to hunt them down. Apollo's tail was flipping about the air slowly as he tried to listen to the surroundings for signs that they might be followed. From the lack of presence he could sense of the pack he was sure they were both in the clear for now.

"Why would you choose to roam the city ruins when you know very well what the ruins of the city are like?" Apollo asked curiously as his purple eyes studied the man with a spark of something in his gaze that wanted to understand Gunner's intentions.

"Of course, I know it's dangerous out in the ruins of Abaron city but it's not like Prince Clyde is going to tell me what we're doing here and I hate being kept in the dark and forced to act like a lazy house pet." Gunner slowly pried open the door to an abandoned building before shoving Apollo inside and following from behind. Pulling the door back shut behind them they found themselves sealed together inside the building of what was once a local coffee shop. There was a faint scent of old coffee beans filling the air as they both stepped further inside to rest a bit.

"You know as well as I do that he's not intentionally trying to make you flee the safety zone. Why else would I be here if not for him requesting aid in retrieving you?" Apollo smiled smugly as if he wanted praise that someone would need his help. There was something about Apollo that always gave Gunner the feeling that he was very prideful in how useful he found himself to be. His ears twitched slightly as he stood there in silence with his thumb pointing directly at himself.

"You really feel like you're above others, don't you?" Gunner asked him bluntly as he could not restrain himself from questioning the demon's self pride.

Walking over to an old booth Gunner slid his way down into the seat and relaxed himself a bit. After all the running and fighting he had done so far today it felt good to finally be off his feet. Out of the corner of his eyes he could see the expressions on Apollo's face shifting as if he had been insulted. The tail of the demon had dropped low to the floor as his ears pinned back firmly. A look of annoyance was painted clear as day on his face as he glared down at Gunner.

"What? I come out into the ruins of Abaron to aid you in returning safely and that's the thanks I get? I feel appalled.." Apollo scoffed as his head snapped to look in another direction. The way he was acting reminded Gunner of a teenage girl throwing a tantrum.

"I didn't mean it like that." Gunner had to hold his laughter in as he watched the demon's refusal to give him so much as a glance. When it came to teasing the demon Apollo it was beginning to feel like a great way to pass his time. The reactions the man gave Gunner were always something that felt refreshing.

"Shh.." Apollo's ears suddenly twitched as he hushed Gunner where he sat. His ears could easily catch the slightest sounds that were out of place and at the moment something was bothering him.

"Why are you-?" Gunner wanted to ask him why he was being hushed but the demon quickly raised his hand in the air to silence him once more before he could finish asking. Watching the way he was acting put Gunner slightly on edge as he wondered what was wrong.

"Something's not right." Apollo said as he followed the faint sounds his ears were picking up all the way to a door at the back of the coffee shop.

As Apollo pushed the door open he found himself standing outside the back of coffee shop. Faint sounds could be heard from Gunner's own feet as the man walked up beside Apollo. Kneeling down on the ground, with the aid of his tail, he began to pry a manhole cover from the middle of the street. The process was not an easy one but with the aid of his tail he was able to manage it. The manhole cover was heavy but tossed aside like it was nothing to Apollo. Sounds from below the city began to flood the silence of the street that resembled that of a sleeping beast faintly snoring.

"What is that?" Gunner asked as he knelt down closer to the no longer covered manhole. He could hear the faint sounds of the beast below as his eyes slowly swept in Apollo's direction to see him twitch slightly at the question.

"Ah, that~" Putting a smile on his face Apollo slowly raised his finger into the air as his tail waved back and forth behind his back. As much as he expected to be asked that question when he realized what the noise was he still could not believe that Gunner seemed so intrigued by it. "Looks like one of the entrances into a beast den."

"So.. there was a den that close to the safety zone? Is it a hell hound den or something else?" Gunner asked as he knelt down beside the hole. The sounds the beast made as it slept were loud enough that he could hear it clearly with the manhole cover off. It was clearly heavily asleep since it slept through the manhole cover being thrown aside by Apollo a moment ago.

"This should certainly be reported when we get-" Apollo went to speak but before he could his eyes caught sight of Gunner climbing straight down the manhole's ladder. There was no time for him to object to Gunner going down the manhole causing him to pace back and forth as Gunner's figure was quickly down the hole. After considering his options Apollo exhaled heavily and followed after him. The scent of the sewers mixing with the beast made his entire being shudder to the core. It felt to Apollo as if his very sense of smell at been violated and he had to fight off the queasy feeling that followed suit.
