Chereads / The Pros and Cons of Immortality / Chapter 5 - Monster Hunting

Chapter 5 - Monster Hunting

"Holy shit." Maria whispers as she sat beside her husband. Their car racing through the lonely highways as she scrolls through the data given to her.

"I always kind of forget who your father is. Though his antics never cease to amaze me."

Leonard sighs, "He does that often. And it's been so long since I've seen him, I forgot what kind of antics he gets into sometimes. At least we have an idea where to start."

"You say that, but I still have no idea where to start. The immensity of his information is abnormal. How much time did he have to compile this?"

She then pulls up a file, "Look at this, he has a file on her family, when she was bought and how she was bought. For fuck's sake, there's even her favorite food! How to dispatch her and ways to buy her back as a double agent." She looks at him, "Why would he wait so long to give us this?"

Leonard laughs, his hand off the wheel as the car races through, "There are three reasons he would do this. He wants us to visit more often. He enjoys messing with us or he wants the complete annihilation of his enemies."

Maria laughs. "I don't know which one I prefer."

"Don't think about it, because he most likely would have done it for all at the same time." Leonard shakes his head in fond memories.

His current position as the intelligence officer of the Empire. Everything he does he learned from him, "He's also most likely bored after his resignation."

Maria snorts before she looks down, scrolling through the documents before she remembers something, "Oh, right! What the hell was that?"

"What do you mean?"

"That? You just suddenly froze when he talked about your education." Leonard freezes again as memories rush in, his mind in a frenzied deadlock.

Maria continues, unaware of his husband's reaction, "Frankly, I think whatever he did with you should work again. I mean, you turned out great."

Leonard shakes his head. "No, just no."

Arthur looks up a mansion, one moderately sized mansion that stood in the middle of the woods. The car behind them winding down. "What are we doing here?"

"What does it look like? Obviously, dad has something ridiculous cooked up for us." remarks Attie as she stood beside him, her eyes roaming the dark woods.

Remulus stands before them, hands on his waist as he chirps. "Correct! We're here to start your education! And the first of which is Chaos Hunting."

"Chaos? What now?" Arthur looks at him in confusion.

Remulus looks at him for a second, "Oh, right!"

He wears glasses. "Chaos is the raw and untamed magic flowing throughout the world. It is the most powerful of forces, power so vast it could turn anyone godlike."

Arthur nods, "Wow, that sounds like an awesome deal."

Remulus smirks, "Oh, it is. It is the most powerful of forces, yet with it comes a great cost."

Attie crosses her arms. "The complete degradation of their soul. A subordination to your desires and you lose your dick."

"That means you die for real." Remulus chirps. "No more second chances in reincarnation. Immortality becomes a mere dream."

Arthur recoils, "Ok maybe not that good of a deal."

"Yes, yet while those could happen. The powerful ones could tame Chaos Magic, pacing their absorption, taking in the burdens of humanity while they strengthen themselves. But to become stronger, that requires training."

Remulus smirks. "Training those idiots wouldn't do. Because they are subordinate to their desires."

He then grins, "So, kids! What did we learn!? That it works as a terrible crutch. Well, more like a wheelchair that hits you."

Arthur raises his hand. "Then why are we here again?"

Remulus points to the mansion. "Inside that mansion, there is a vein of chaos magic. Within it are demons, but since they're weak, they're closer to mindless monsters. Their bodies wouldn't last long without chaos' touch."

Remulus hand then lights up, a giant fuck off sword in his hand, "That's why they can't leave and we're here to exterminate them. Well, both of you mostly."

The two kids look at one another, Arthur's hand shines, Excalibur back on his hand while Attie smiles, the darkness in her feet creeping upwards.

"We'll take care of it."

"Okay, bye!" Remulus slams the door behind them.

"What?" Arthur tries to kick down the door. "Why are you leaving!?"

"You bastard!" Attie kicks the door, shadows creeping up her skin. "I'll kill you!"

Remulus holds the big fuck off sword in front of the door. "Adversity breed excellence, children. I know you could do this and I'll be here waiting."

Attie prepares to kick down the door before the shadow takes over. "Father, I shall not fail you."

Arthur just shrugs. "Well, if he thinks we could take it, we probably could."

"Of course, he always has." Attie remarks, her eyes glancing at the door as Remulus peeks through, his mouth clamping into tears.

"Soooo, you're the expert here, right? What do you think we're about to fight?" Arthur asks, his eyes fleeting across the large staircase as the wood creaks beneath him.

Attie then shivers at the wind blowing on her shoulders, "I am unsure. Though the mansion's eerie atmosphere gives me enough of an idea."

Arthur tense in fear, "You think it's ghosts?"

"There's a huge chance it might be." The wind then blows through the windows. Doors above the staircase creaking open as the mansion shudders.

Arthur steps to his sister's side, his arms shaking as they went up the stairs. "Don't worry, sister. I'll protect you."

The mass of darkness replies, "I doubt such a statement, brother."

"C'mon, I can take them. Excalibur should do the trick, right?"

"Of course, ghosts are just leftover souls and memories tainted by chaos. And if it's anything close to what I have fought, then they'll be easy for us."

A loud bang then follows such words. Arthur, now behind his sister, held her in his arms. His eyes then peek from behind her as he mutters, "Are there ghosts?"

"No, there are none." Attie spoke, stepping through the hallways, the shadows in her feet creeping through the ground as the soft rustle of leaves left Arthur terrified.

"Do you think we should head back?" Arthur asks, his eyes fleeting door to door as the wood creak beneath his feet, the smell of old wood wafting into his nose as the light dims.

"That would be unnecessary, since I feel their presence through that door." Attie points at the end of the hallway. Her mind steeled as weapons form on her arm.

Arthur then freezes in fear. His hand gripping her shoulder. "Do we have to go?"

"Of course, we would have wasted our time otherwise." With that, she walks forward, her steps resolute as Arthur follows close behind her, his eyes never leaving the door.

His hand gripping his sword as he asks, "You know, Remulus wouldn't blame us."

Attie sighs her hand over the doorknob, "Brother, calm down. We open this door and we kill everything in it. You did it with me once. We can do it again."

Arthur nods, "Got it."

Attie then pushes open the door, opening it to a sight neither of them will ever forget.

Before them stood a six feet tall cockroach standing on its legs, as hundreds of its children swarm beside it, their appearance so monstrous, the two children stood, frozen in fear.

"AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

"FUCK NO!" Attie shouts, the shadow jumping off her skin as the children dashes away in fright. Arthur's sword disappears as the two run like their life depended on it.

"Attie! hit it with some kind of fucking magic." Arthur shouts. His steps, frantic as panic courses through him.

"Fuck no! You slash it apart instead!"

"Bitch! Do you want me to die in disgust!? That shit would spray so much shit on me. No amount of shower could ever save me!"

"Then you want me to, older brother!?"

"Yeah, I'm ordering you to do it!"

Then, as they argue through the hallway, they hear buzzing. A pit of despair forms in their stomach as they turn to the sound. The cockroach and its brood hovers before flying towards them. Its eyes lock unto their forms.

"AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

The sounds of their shout shatters the windows, their feet blasting through the mansion as the two children ran for their lives, their eyes stuck on the monster before them.

Arthur jumps from the second floor, "FUCKING JUMP!" his arms open wide as Attie follows suit. Their eyes on the mansion entrance as it opens, revealing Remulus frantically calling them out.

Remulus then widens his eyes, "Get the fuck out! Quickly! I didn't know that fucking bitch got this big!" A flamethrower appears on his hand as he shouts, "Get behind me!"

The two children then slide through the door, stopping behind him as Remulus roars, "Die! Motherfucker! Die!"

A great blast of fire then erupts from his weapon. The cockroaches erupting in flames as it screeches at him. He shouts, "Close the door!"

The two slam it close, the cockroach skittering at the door. Remulus slumps as the two children bawl on his chest. "DAD!"

Remulus embraces them as he ran. "Let's go! This place is about to get napalmed!"
