Chapter 1 - What a cliché way to die...

I was just on my way to school when my friends surprised me. I swear that my soul almost left my body when they did that. We were having fun while we talked. Well, that was until...

"Look out!"

A truck was going out of control and was just about to hit us. With all my strength, I pushed my friends aside as I was hit by the truck. I was sent flying quite some distance before I landed on the ground with a loud thud.

Everything was hurting. My vision was turning blurry as my ears rang. I faintly heard the yells of my friends, but I couldn't understand them. I'm just glad that they're okay...

Although, I was disappointed in one thing about all of this...

Truly, what a cliché way to die.

---

When I opened my eyes once more, all I saw were the happy smiles of a beautiful woman with white hair and blue eyes and a handsome man with black hair and red eyes. I was confused and I tried to speak, only to find it difficult.

I tried reaching out, but then I say that my hands were... small and chubby... Oh God, don't tell me I got reincarnated...

"Look, he has your eyes, Edward." Said the woman.

"Yeah, he has your hair too, Ellis." Said the man.

They looked at me with loving eyes and held me close. It was at this moment that I began to tear up, now realizing that I've truly left my family on Earth. That there is no way for me to return. I didn't even get to see my sibling get born...

Since I was crying loudly, the woman started to pat my back while saying that everything was okay. Of course, I calmed down after a few minutes. However, something unexpected happened after that...

---

"CLOSE THE GATES! MEN, KEEP FIRING AT THEM! DON'T LET THEM GET NEAR THE WALLS!" Yelled the captain as he charged another [Fire Shot].

The knights followed his orders as they closed the gates and continued shooting arrows and spells at the oncoming horde of demons. However, something was weird. Their projectiles were bouncing couldn't the demons.

It took the demons getting closer to the walls for them to realize that there was a barrier. Now, this isn't that uncommon. Some demons have the ability to cast a barrier, but not to this extent.

"Petty humans, did you lot really think this will be enough to destroy my magnificent barrier?"

The voice resounded in the ears of all the knights and even the captain. The captain was especially shaken up. After all, this was the voice of someone who decimated his army a few months back...

"Grand Mage!"

It was none other than the Grand Mage of the Demon Lord, Roswell. Hearing his name being yelled out by a familiar voice made him cackle.

"You're still alive? Just another trash for me to take out I suppose."

Hearing this, the captain gritted his teeth. He was burning with rage, but he knew better. If he lets his anger get the best of him, then countless lives will be at stake. Although, it was already too late. No matter what actions the captain will choose will be futile... Because in just a blink of an eye...

"GAH!"

The walls collapsed as the Grand Mage shot a [Hellblaze]. The knights and the captain were burnt to a crisp. Their screams resounded throughout the whole kingdom. Citizens ran about as the couple who just had their child gritted their teeth. Today was supposed to be a happy day after all...

Edward took his sword and rushed outside, but not before telling his wife to not follow him and just to stay put. Ellis was more than worried for his husband, but she knew that he was right. She was in no fighting condition. Not to mention their newborn son...

Back to Edward, he was now killing off the demons that were terrorizing his kingdom. It was all easy for him until the Grand Mage arrived. After this monster arrived, all of his attacks got deflected while the enemy keeps on landing good hits on him.

"Haha! This is all you puny humans can do?"

Edward grinned as he finally finished up charging his attack. Converting the accumulated damage he received into Mana, he put all of it into his blade. The blade shone a bright red as it began emitting incredible heat. The Mage was intrigued by the attack that this man was preparing, but he felt that if he didn't take this seriously, then it would cost him.

And so, the Grand Mage cast his strongest barrier. Edward's grin just stayed on his face, although on the inside, he was preparing for what was to come.

'I just became a father and now I'm already going to die? Well, even if I return alive, I'm going to have to retire from being an Adventurer...'

With a heavy step, Edward dashed toward the Grand Mage. He raised his sword about his head and with a war cry, slashed downwards. A beam of red light came out of the sword and headed towards the Grand Mage. It hit the barrier cast by the enemy and stopped. The Grand Mage smirked but just a few seconds later, that smirk will turn into a frown...

*Crack*

The barrier started cracking, at a fast pace too. The Grand Mage began panicking and was just about to warp away, but he was stopped by chains that were made out of the Holy Element. It was the [Bind] spell of Edward.

Now unable to move, the Grand Mage looked in horror as the beam of light broke through the barrier. It hit him head-on, creating a large explosion that burnt the debris near to a crisp.

Thinking that he finally finished the demon off, Edward finally let out a pained sigh. His body was turning pale, cracks appearing everywhere as his very life was fading. This was the cost of that move.

"My, my. That really was quite the move."

"!!"

Dread washed over Edward as he saw the figure of the Grand Mage floating. In his hands was an orb with a dark glow to it. Edward knew what this weapon was. He couldn't believe that the Demon Lord will lend this weapon to the Grand Mage.

"...Weapon of Destruction... Edos." Edward whispered.

"Oh? I see that you know your stuff. Well then, disappear from this world along with this kingdom."

The Grand Mage grinned as he raised his hands up.

---

Ellis felt it. The Mana in the air was gathering in one spot and just a few seconds later, a large explosion resounded once more. This time, she knew that it wasn't from her husband. She quickly put used all of her Mana to cast a barrier around her as she held her son, but it wasn't enough, the explosion was breaking through.

With a sad smile, she put her son back in the crib and she put her necklace on him. This was a one-time use Nullification Barrier, and worse of all, it can only support one person. It was given to her by Edward in case of an emergency and now was that time.

"Sorry son, we couldn't be good parents after all."

Her son reached for her face and she complied, moving in closer and kissing her son on the forehead. That was the last vision time the child saw his mother as darkness covered his vision.
