Chapter 28 - Volturi arrives

Simon was going towards the battlefield with guards of Volturi, he had already made his decision not to help the Cullens any further. He just hoped Jasper and Alice didn't get into any other mess because even he didn't know what he would do then.

The Volturi arrive and survey the battlefield, they see the Cullen's standing there as if they had been expecting them and the bodies of many newborns. They are mildly impressed that the Cullens survived without any casualties and that they were not required to help them.

Simon ignores the nomad vampires and Jasper as if he doesn't even know them with them doing the same as it was not known by everyone that Simon indirectly helped the Cullens. And continues to survey the battlefield.

Then Jane notices a girl cowering behind the Cullens.

"What is that?"

Carlisle and Esme push her behind their backs attempting to protect her, gather their courage and start to explain, "she was a newborn with the army we have offered Bree asylum in exchange for her surrender."

But none of the Volturi are pleased by it and just stare coldly at her.

"The Cullens have no asylum to offer nor are required to do so."

Jane torments Bree with terrible pain, as she uses her ability, and starts interrogating her to learn about her creation.

Bree screams at the top of her lungs as pain overwhelms her senses, she is barely able to get an answer out, "I don't know who the leader of the newborn army was. Riley trusted none of us with the knowledge."

Jane keeps using her ability for a few more moments before deciding that she doesn't know any more useful information.

Edward slyly suggests, "the Volturi surely knows about the vampire Victoria and her actions, after all they are the overseers of the vampires."

Before the situation escalates Carlisle comes in between and tried to resolve the situation, "if they had known, they would have acted early and stopped her themselves after all what she did goes against the main laws of the Volturi."

None of the Volturi seem to be bothered by Edwards comment, they simply don't care about what others think about them.

Simon moves towards Bree, "now then what should happen to you?"

Carlisle and Esme answered immediately, "we'll take her into our coven and we vow to take responsibility for Bree."

But none of the Volturi look convinced, Jane says, "you are in no position to do that. She has been found guilty by the Volturi, your opinion is wothless. We don't offer second chances." Her eyes moves towards Bella who had wrapped the cut on her arm with a cloth and was behind Edward, "the Cullens will be in enough trouble when Caius learns that we have been taken advantage of, seeing that Bella is still human, even though we had decided to show you mercy by not executing her then and there."

Bella understands that the Cullens are in trouble due her being a human and quickly says, "a date has been set."

Jane stares at Bella before backing off from her as it was never her objective to deal with her.

"Destroy her." Jane order Felix as she points towards Bree.

Knowing that trying to protect Bree will bring the full wrath of the Volturi upon them, the Cullens resignedly step out of Felix's way, leaving the terrified Bree to her fate.

Felix pulls off Bree's head with his hands and crushes her head leaving her lifeless body.

The Cullens just stare as it happens since they knew they weren't enough to face the Volturi, they feel remorse on her death but nobody did anything after all they didn't know her well.

The Volturi leave after making sure that no other newborn is still alive. Simon didn't stop behind this time to talk to Jasper and Alice.

Seeing the Volturi leave the nomadic vampires breath a sigh of relief and turn to Jasper, "we have repaid our debt we will be leaving as well." And they all go away in different directions.

Carlisle rushes to the Quileutes place to treat the wolf that had broken it's ribs while the rest of the Cullens go their own way.

Jasper and Alice go their separate way to have a moment by themselves. After seeing that Simon and Jane neither greeted them nor stayed behind to talk to them, they had understood that a friendship might be maintained but it was impossible to go back to the way they were before.
