DEVYN'S POV
Dripping tears call me back to consciousness. I open my eyes to see Denzyl leaning over me. His eyes are closed in deep concentration, and his brows are furrowed. His lips are parted, and small, quiet pants escape his mouth. I shift a little to look at my surroundings. I am lying on the ground in what seems to be a slit in a cliff. When did he bring me here? Denzyl feels me shift, and he opens his eyes. They sparkle with tears as he looks down at me. Why is he crying?
My body is freezing, but Denzyl's touch takes away the cold. I slowly reach up and wipe a tear from his cheek. He is cold to the touch. Memories of the freezing sea flood my head when I wonder why Denzyl is so cold. I did this to him; I do not think demons are supposed to get this cold.
"I'm so sorry," the demon cries softly.
His words confuse me. Why is he apologizing for saving me? Strange. I do not know what he is trying to do, but it seems to be stressing him.
A lump appears in my throat as I watch a tear trickle down his face. Something in me does not want to see him cry. Wait...why am I thinking this way? He is a demon!! Even though these thoughts run rampant in my mind, I do not stop myself from cupping Denzyl's cheek in my hand and rubbing my thumb over his pale skin soothingly. "It's okay," I whisper. I do not know where that came from, but I want him to know it will be alright.
This causes the demon to release a breath and close his eyes. I watch as an orange crystal starts growing around us. The crystal refracts the sparse light beautifully and radiates a comforting warmth, making me relax as it increases in size. The case begins to throb and vibrate as it grows over my head, threatening cracks appearing in the glowing crystal. Denzyl is quick to cover me as the crystal shatters.
"Agh!" He cries out desperately and clenches his jaw. The ground surrounding us is covered in crystal shards, cutting Denzyl's hands as he fists the ground.
My breathing suddenly becomes strained as a freezing pain in my chest appears. I take a short gasp for air as my chest tightens, my vision blurring from pain and lack of oxygen. The demon looks down at me in worry and places his hand on my chest. I swallow and catch my breath as the pain slowly resides with his touch. What was that? Was my heart freezing?
"Devyn," Denzyl whimpers. Why is this demon so emotional? I have never heard of demons being able to care for someone, much less a human. But Denzyl's sad, grey eyes strike up something in me. I reach my arms up and cradle his head, gently pulling him down. I turn on my side as Denzyl lies down beside me. The demon wraps his arms around me as I place my hand on his cheek and look into his eyes.
"I'll save you," Denzyl whispers as he pulls me close to him.
We keep eye contact as the crystalline structure slowly begins growing around us. The demon's grey eyes portray a deep concentration as he continues to develop the case. A single tear escapes Denzyl's eye as the crypt successfully covers us.
"We'll be alright," Denzyl sighs as he closes his eyes.
My eyes droop as the case hardens together. Denzyl seems to be relieved, and his body is relaxed. I reach out and wipe the tear that is trailing down Denzyl's face only to find it has turned into a tiny crystal drop. I, too, relax as the crypt grows stronger, and our souls go to sleep. The crypt emits a soft glow as our souls begin to slowly heal. I do not know how long I will be in the crypt, but I strangely feel safe in Denzyl's arms; a safety that I have never felt before.
