Lara wasn't his mate.
He wasn't expecting her to be his mate, rather he firmly believed she was already his and the pull of the mating bond would merely be a moment of revelation. He ran and ran and ran, where? He wasn't sure. All he wanted was to put as much distance between them as he possibly could. Tears blurred his vision and as his mind caught up with the reality of the whole situation, he felt his limbs go numb. He collapsed on the ground, legs giving out, it was all too much for him.
Her face flashed in his mind, the fear in her eyes when he caught them, the way she had moved forward, not to talk to him but to protect her own mate. Her lips moved, she was saying something, but he was too stunned to be able to hear anything. A myriad of emotions passed on her face; fear, pain, guilt, regret. Fear being the prominent one as if she was afraid of what he'll do to them. It was at that moment that he realized how his own emotions were a mess, hell, he himself was afraid of what he'll do to them.
That familiar rage had made its way to his brain, kicking out every sane thought, all he wanted was to let it out. He had turned his back on them and ran. Drowning in misery, he hadn't paid much attention to his surroundings, completely missing the scent of the few wolves that had been following him for a while. They were rogues, like the one he had killed before. It wasn't until one of them crept up to him, fangs out on full display as the large wolf let out a growl, did kai realize he was surrounded.
His anger flared up, 'fools' he thought, they had walked right to their graves. He got up to his feet, pulling himself to his full height, and let out a snarl, louder than all of those rogues combined. He ripped apart the first one that jumped on him, tearing at its neck, relishing in the way its growls turned to screams before completely being drowned out as the wolf choked on its own blood.
Rage. Lara had always said his temper was going to be his downfall someday and maybe she might have had a point there. But she didn't know where it came from, he had never shared that part of his past with her, not with anyone. Their pack labeled him as the crazed wolf because of his temper; not knowing that it was what actually had kept him alive in life-threatening situations, had made him the strongest wolf in their pack. His temper was the only thing that had kept him going rather than giving up on life.
And right now, he let it take over, it distracted him from the pain in his heart, from his desire to just give up on everything. He let his primal instincts, the wild side take over; enjoying the feel of pulling the life out from each one of those who came at him. He sank to the dance of death, projecting the storm of emotions inside on the rogues who were stupid enough to chase him. He relished when they cried out in pain; mirroring the pain he felt in his heart.
In a span of mere minutes, he had killed around five to six rogue wolves. He shifted and looked around at the mess he'd made and stumbled away from them. As the adrenaline from the fight snuffed out, the rage melted into pure misery that consumed him whole. His sharp ears had caught the sound of flowing water nearby and he stumbled toward it. He should probably wash off his wounds, one of the rogues had managed to bite him and though rogue venom couldn't truly poison him, it slowed down the natural healing process. However, before he could reach the waterfall, another obstacle stood in his path, a massive black bear. Although he was good at hunting bears, he was too exhausted and wounded to be able to take him down. A vicious fight broke out between them and for the first time in his life, Kai was on the losing side yet he somehow managed to cut the throat of the animal with his long talons. And then everything blacked out as his body gave up.
...…..
His body ached all over, groaning, he slowly opened his eyes and panicked when his sharp nose detected the smell of the species he hated the most. Humans.
The flash of bright light made him cover up his eyes with his arms.
"Hey, we're here to help you, we'll take you to the hospital. You're gonna be okay, buddy" the human that was holding him, spoke and Kai twisted away from him. One look at his surroundings made him realize he was in a man-made box similar to the one they had in their pack.
"No" he huffed out. "Leave me here, I'd rather die than go anywhere near the city" He grabbed the handle to the door but no matter how much he pulled at it, the door didn't open.
"Listen, you don't look well, we have to get you to a doctor" The human spoke and Kai had the urge to pull out his talons, that would scare them off.
"No" he almost growled making the human scoot back in his seat. "I said leave me here and go away" He turned to the door to get out, but he felt dizzy. He didn't even remember how many days had passed after he had fought with those rogues and before he could even reach the door, his consciousness gave up.
...
A mixture of scents filled his nose as he came to his senses. The surface he lay on was soft along with the blanket that covered him. Slowly blinking his eyes open, Kai looked around in bewilderment. Where was he? He gingerly sat up, taking in his peculiar surroundings, his nose then caught on the pleasant smell of wild honeysuckle. It was calming somehow and Kai closed his eyes to breathe it in, letting it fill his lungs. When he turned his head toward the source though, he scampered away in such a hurry that he fell out of the bed, making numerous items on the bedside table crash down as well.
The sharp shards of the broken item cut his skin open, making him hiss but he was on his feet in an instant, ignoring the tiny trails of blood now flowing on his forearms. Kai felt a tug at his heart, an unfamiliar emotion filling him up which added more to his disoriented state. The human, having heard the loud noises, was now waking up and Kai merely stood there, staring at him in utter shock.
Mate. There was no denying the pull he felt in his heart as if his soul itself was bound by chains to the stupid little human in front of him.
No. It couldn't be. The wolf Goddess was truly cold-hearted.
Kai stood there, completely stunned, trying to process his fate and when their eyes locked, the idiot let out a blood-curdling scream.
