Chapter 68 - Luca was dead and it was because of her

She walked around for a while till she heard a shaky voice laced with strong Italian accent.

"I don't know what to do Mia! I'm also helpless ah!"

"How can you say that? You know if it gets into the hands of the police, this matter will probably be dismissed. We don't know how capable the other party is" Mia's voice rang out.

Police? Other party? What on earth were they talking about?

Kahlan halted wanting to hear the rest of the conversation.

Her mind traced back to earlier when they both had odd expressions on their faces, even Luca's wife was looking a bit stressed...She had thought the it was because of work.

It turned out they were hiding something from her as she had thought.

"I feel sorry for that madam, you can tell she still loved that husband of hers to some extent. Now, he's dead! Luca was indeed an eyesore but isn't it harsh to die in such manner"

"Don't let Kahlan know of this matter Mia. She might be related to the cause of Luca's murder" Marcello warned.

What? Luca was dead? and...it had something to do with her? How was this possible...

She took two steps back shaking her head in disbelief but her thoughts went back to that sadness and pain she saw flashing across Luca's wife's eyes. Her husband had died but she was still trying to appear strong in front of her, smiling and indulging her as if everything was fine.

That only meant that what Marcello had said was undoubtedly the truth. Luca might have died because of her!

If not so, why would they hide such a crucial matter from her?!

Luca was dead! It was because of her!!

Those words kept sounding in her ears, the dejected expression of his wife throwing her into disarray and striping all form of rationality from her. She took few more steps back in disbelief, her body trembling in shock.

She turned around and bolted towards the exit of the bar.

She had to find answers, why was nature treating her unkind. She didn't care what danger was out there waiting for her, she only hoped nothing bad will happen to those that cared for her, treating her with utmost kindness including their loved ones and family all because of her.

She wasn't asking for too much. Was she? This bouts of endless misfortune has rendered her completely spiteful.

After running out of the bar to an unfamiliar street she walked around aimlessly, tears rolling down her cheeks.

Should she find Luca's wife? But what would she tell her? She stopped in her track, feeling grief wash over her as she stood in the middle of an open place with people busily scurrying by.

She had developed the habit of wearing white ever since she started dating Leo. Making her discard her colored clothes slowly replacing it with white.

That way, she felt closer to Leo. Anytime they met, they both wore white looking like a couple even though Leo's clothes were branded and of higher quality but hers was pitiful.

She didn't mind anyway, she looked down on the white cloth she was putting on silently, it's not as if she didn't want to stop wearing them but because she had no money to purchase new one.

At this time, she had already calmed down but started walking around again not knowing where she was headed.

After careful thought she decided to walk home, thinking she would better cool off alone.

She walked into a silent looking and somewhat of dejected street, leading to the route adjoining to her place of residence.

Unknown to her, a figure had been following her right from when she left the bar and was still following her afraid to lose sight of her.

Her head was down and she had many thoughts eating up her mind as she walked dragging her feet tiredly so she didn't notice this particular figure was getting closer and closer.

The figure, having gotten much closer to her grabbed her by the arm tightly leaving her no room for escape.

Kahlan was shell shocked and immediately open her mouth to shout. Yet this figure had beat her to the game, suddenly covering her mouth and nose with a handkerchief.

From the sturdy, strong arm clasping both of her arms and holding her in place.

She let out muffled sounds in protest, kick at her back because the person was holding her from the back.

She quickly detected a strong scent from the handkerchief, her brain set off an alarm but she felt dizzier at each passing second.

"Good girl, don't struggle...I'm still enjoying touching this smooth skin of yours" the person behind her said in mischievous grin.

What was going on? Was she being kidnapped? But why? She had always lived with her head down and had no money, what would they want from her?

Unless the Cypher family has found her and wanted to take her back to that prison like college.

As her thoughts reached here...

Chill traveled down Kahlan's spine as she succumbed to the awaiting darkness.
