Chapter 5 - A Criminal's Judgement (Ch.5)

FIRST MISSION: WAKE UP

MISSION LEVEL: EASY

MISSION STATUS: COMPLETED

REWARD: BASIC INTRODUCTION (UNLOCKED)

HIDDEN MISSION: MAINTAIN CONSCIOUSNESS

MISSION STATUS: COMPLETED

REWARD FOR HIDDEN MISSION: N/A

Chantria frowned in astonishment as she read through the words on the status screen.

She scoffed as she took notice of the unreasonable hidden mission even as she pondered over how this Harem System even worked.

The first set of sentences disappeared to be replaced by a new set of sentences.

-ACCESS REWARD (BASIC INTRODUCTION) IMMEDIATELY?

-SAVE FOR LATER?

Chantria read the words thoughtfully, the basic introduction seemed like a rather promising option and Chantria hoped it could help her better understand her present situation.

Chantria doubted where she currently was had anything to do with heaven or hell and if she had to be a fish for heaven knows how long, she at least wanted to know why.

Chantria was just about reaching out to access the basic introduction when her ears twitched, picking up voices from a distant.

"Someone's coming!" Chantria thought in alarm as her eyes snapped open, her gaze scanning the vast ocean depth in search of the source of the sound.

Chantria was not even certain if she was to be elated or wary,

It would truly have been horrifying to spend the rest of her existence all alone, beneath the sea, surrounded by just fishes for company.

However Chantria wondered if whoever was approaching would bear ulterior motives, after all, what she currently was definitely did not look like an every day sight.

A large shadow overhead caught Chantria's attention and Chantria tilted her head up, squinting her eyes slightly.

Since she realized she was at the depth of the sea, Chantria had not even attempted glancing up to the surface, it was too far up and Chantria did not even know how to use her tail or what she would find on the surface.

If this version of the afterlife was anything like back home, then she certainly would not find a very welcoming reception above the surface.

The large shadow overhead seemed to Chantria to be a boat or a ship of some sort and it glided over the surface of the water at a very slow pace.

And then, the voices Chantria had heard before came again, this time more clear to Chantria's hearing and Chantria realized with astonishment that she could actually pick out the words that were being said from such a great distance.

"I'm innocent! I swear it! I loved her! I couldn't have harmed her, you must believe me!" A voice screamed,

The tone of this voice was thick with sorrow and it seemed whoever was speaking was also sobbing heavily,

For whatever reason, this heartwrenching scream and desperate pleading tugged at Chantria's heart.

"Criminal Amir Naeem, you stand accused of the murder of Saint Chantria. Your guilt is proven beyond doubt."

"As a Kei of Saint Chantria's harem, you have committed an unpardonable crime." Another voice began in a hateful tone.

'Saint Chantria?' Chantria wondered,

The name and title of 'Saint' sounded awfully familiar to Chantria, as did the crime the first voice was being accused of,

But try as she might, Chantria could not place exactly where she had heard of something like this before.

Chantria dismissed her thoughts deciding the name probably sounded familiar to her because it coincidentally happened to be her name as well.

Chantria shook her head slightly and focused her attention to listening in on the voices.

"Please! You have to believe me! I didn't know! Someone... please!" The heartwrenching voice came again, it's pleading getting even more desperate.

"Your actions have resulted in an imbalance! The seas are overflowing their banks and flooding cities in wrath at the death of the guardian! The other guardians have tried and failed to tame the seas! Your actions will result in the death of thousands!"

"And you still dare deny your crime?! You shamelessly hope to live?!" The second voice roared again.

Unable to counter the words of the second voice, Chantria heard the first voice break down into sobs, his cries aching Chantria's heart.

Chantria frowned slightly, wondering what a natural disaster like flooding had to do with a pitiful person who desperately tried to be heard and vindicated.

Chantria could hear echoes from a far distance and she guessed there were a lot more people on the sea shore, perhaps they had come to watch the judgement of this Amir Naeem.

Chantria could pick up a few violent exclamations like 'murderer!' and 'kill him!',

Chantria wondered if the after life had no human rights activists... such ancient methods of execution had long been outlawed.

At most, one would get a life sentence or a death by hanging charge if the crime was severe enough, however there was no cause for an execution to be held under the scrutiny and mockery of the public.

Regardless of whatever reason, human life was to be cherished and respected at any cost, this was a concept that had been ingrained into Chantria's heart since she took up a course in the medical field.

For medical practitioners, there was no guilty or innocent, everyone deserved a chance at life and that was the way it was meant to be.

Chantria had long accepted her only concern was saving lives, regardless of the back story of the life in question.

"By decree of His Imperial Majesty, the Emperor! In light of your status and past affections with the noble saint, you will not be publicly executed by decapitation!"

"This is in honor of the noble saint! However you are to be tossed into the deep from whom you have snatched a guardian and may the deep decide your fate!" The second voice announced.

"No please! You have to believe me! Please!" The first voice cried out desperately.

Chantria's eyes widened as she watched the shadow of a thrashing figure lifted over the edge of the boat.

"They are going to toss him into the ocean!" Chantria realized with horror.
