"Just remember, girl: we make the monsters."
"Then they can only be as bad as we make them," she insisted. "And we can only be as bad as they make us.

In Danish religion, there is a tree, a serpent, and three spinners who spin our fates. The tree connected three worlds: Asgard, world of the gods; Jotunheim, world of frost giants; and Niflheim, world of the dead. The serpent, Nidhogg gnawed at the roots of the tree. And then there are the Norns.
Norns are the spinners. It is said that they are the only ones who know our fates, the only ones who know what we are about to do. They don't control us, no. They just know our fates and spin those fates with threads of yarn. Sometimes, you believe you will have great fortune, but the Danes will say that the Spinners are laughing at you while your great fortune turns out to be a pile of rocks.
