Chapter 3 - : Journey to the Undead

Yui PoV

I'm Yui Tasha, 48 y/o with a family of 6… but now, it's only me. My whole family was a victim of the vampire attack that happened in the year 2018, approximately 5 years ago… Well, it's probably just me who knows what really happened since everyone thought it was caused by a storm. Thanks to Haven, I was able to regain my memories…

She's been awake for 6 months now, I do get scared of her at times and other people would probably get scared of her too so I bought her gray eye contacts- cause that's her original eye color- and I always told her to wear a mask to hide her appearance that literally shouts "Emma vampire, yow." whenever she goes out.

Anyways, I have already told her everything that happened but there are some things I didn't tell her… like when I tried to kill her after regaining my memories, but whenever I see her, I see my youngest daughter. In the end, I couldn't do it. I just continued taking care of her, I even learned medicine so I can properly check up on her condition since I can't just take her to the hospital and show her to the world.

Speaking about her, she's been going out a lot lately, even in the daylight- I forgot to mention, she'll become an ash in just a second if she goes out in the morning… I mean, that's to be expected… She's a vampire. I'm just worried 'cause she only uses a hoodie to cover herself… but I'm more worried about something else…

It's not that I don't trust her, still, she hasn't eaten or drunk anything since she woke up. She may be different from humans, but no living creature could last long without eating anything. I'm not thinking that she's eating someone right now… but she might…

Haven's PoV

I looked at the night sky while walking back home- to Mrs. Tasha's house.

Looking back now, it's been 6 month since I woke up and I haven't really eaten anything since then… I was able to live without consuming anything for five whole years, why can't I now, right? And I was so busy learning about humans that I even forgot that I'm hungry.

I mean, I was once a human, but newspapers, magazines, and gadgets were limited to this village back when I was still young so besides our old TV, I don't know anything that's been happening outside the world. Apart from that, a lot of things had changed while I was sleeping so I have a lot of things to cope up with. I'm no human being anymore, and learning about them will make it easier for me to coexist with them. I'd be dead if anyone finds out I'm actually a vampire-

"Hey, Are you a vampire?"

Fuck-

I immediately turned around to see who it was. It's a young guy, he's probably around my age. Damn, I was so occupied that I couldn't even sense him-! Wait, that's not what matters right now! How did he-

He laughed after seeing my dazed reaction, "I'm sorry. I'm Steve. I've been seeing you a lot lately and you're always covered up, hiding yourself with that hoodie and mask despite this hellish summer… like a vampire you know." He explained and laughed again… but I'm not. I mean, I THOUGHT I WAS ABOUT TO DIE!

That seriously scared me to death… I mean I already died once… still- Ah mou!

Wait… he looks familiar…

"You look familiar." he also said. "Have we met before?"

We were both silent for a moment, trying to remember something…

'Roar! I'm dracula!'

Then his eyes suddenly widened, "Haven! God, I almost forgot you, you liked vampires so much you always played dracula in every game we played!" and he burst out laughing.

Yeah, ha-ha funny― That was so embarassing!

And if I can remember, he's the only one in our group who gets scared of me.

"Don't tell me you're still playing one at this age?!" he asked, giving me a mocking grin.

"No." I answered and walked away but he stopped me.

"W-wait. You've been gone for a very long time, can we… talk a little bit more?"

He's in love with me. I've been learning about humans and finding that out is easy when he's this obvious.

"Sure. Follow me." I have to go home first. Mrs. Tasha is probably worried by now. He slowly nodded, he was blushing. I ignored it and continued walking.

He just silently follows me and sometimes steals a glance.

When we reached the house, Mrs. Tasha was outside. She looks uneasy.

I walked faster and when she saw me, relief flashed on her face.

She walked towards me to open the gate for me― us. "Have- Who's that?" He's referring to Steve who's currently beside me.

"I-I'm Steve. Haven's childhood friend." he introduced himself.

Mrs. Tasha stared at him for a second, "Steve… oh that kid. The ones who always get scared of Haven." Mrs. Tasha said, making Steve blush out of embarrassment. See? Told yah.

"It's nice to see that someone still remembers Haven. Let's go inside first." She offered and led the way to the house.

Mrs. Tasha told us to sit first and quickly left us to make something to drink.

Steve's just sitting there looking around like a good boy that was taken to visit a stranger's house.

"So what have you been doing these past few years?" I asked, breaking the silence. He was startled for a moment and laughed awkwardly after.

"I've been living in the orphanage since my parents died 5 years ago. Actually all of our friends too, aside from you, have been living in the orphanage since then. We're all in high school now… just studying so we can help the sisters who took care of us." he answered with a bittersweet smile. Must have been hard for them…

"How about you? We all thought you'd died in that incident… Where have you been all this time?" he asked back. I was taken aback for a moment.

'I slept for 5 years.'

I was about to make up a story when he asked again, "Aren't you hot? Why don't you take off your mask and hoodie first?"

I was stunned, "I-" I was cut off when Mrs. Tasha came back with a tray of teas and answered Steve for me.

"Her skin is very sensitive to dirt…" she put down the tray in front of us and sat beside me. "She's been having treatment in Washington and just came back here a few months ago. She's not yet fully healed so she has to be very careful."

Wow, I almost stood up and clapped my hands at how fast and great she makes up a story.

"Really? Since when did she have that? He was fine back when we were kids." Steve asked curiously. Looks like he's buying into Mrs. Tasha's lies.

"Since the incident 5 years ago. Seemed like Haven had a traumatic experience that gravely affected her skin condition."

Standing ovation! I won't be surprised if I find out she was a writer in her past life.

"I see…" Steve mumbled and gave me a concerned look.

"Okay, that's enough. Have tea first. I made that, hope you like it." She offered tea to Steve which he wholeheartedly accepted. I can smell a sleeping pill on it. I faced Mrs. Tasha and gave her a questioning look.

Her face turned from calm to a serious face giving me a We'll-talk-later look.

What did I do?

We had a bit more conversation with Steve until he slowly fell asleep on the couch.

Mrs. Tasha grabbed my hands and took me to her room.

"Did I do something wrong?" I asked, she looked so furious.

She looked as if she was about to shout at me but stopped. She took a deep breath before looking at me again, less angry but still serious.

"What happened to your senses? Didn't I tell you to walk away quickly if you sense someone approaching you? One wrong move and you're dead― isn't that what I'm always saying?" I looked down, unable to make excuses.

She walked away from me and I saw her taking an old thick book. She came back and handed it to me.

I looked at her questioningly before taking it.

I read the book's name, "Journey To The Undead."

"It's a book about vampires. I bought it to find out more about you. I've read there that vampires can erase someone's memories. Try doing it to Steve before he starts to get too attached to you… I can see it in his eyes, he's in love with you." this time, she's calmer. I nodded as a response.

"Then, can I have this in the meantime?" I asked, referring to the book.

"It's all yours. I have already read it all. Although not everything in there is accurate, it can still help."

"Got it. I'll go back to my room first and see if there's anything else I can do aside from my speed and strength as a vampire."

With the guide of that book, I was able to learn how to erase a person's certain memories and alter them.

After erasing Steve's memories, Mrs. Tasha sent him back to the orphanage the next morning while he was still sleeping.

We never met again after that. I'm always alert whenever I feel like someone's about to approach me and was able to safely get away from it.

A year had passed and all I did was learn about humans and vampires. 3 months ago, while looking up about vampires' whereabouts on the internet, it led me to the word 'portal' and since then, I've been searching for it. I don't know what it looked like so it took me long before I finally found it.

Yep, you read that right. I found a portal⎯⎯ , not the first portal I found though. I found at least 2 more portals but I felt like it wasn't the right one I'm looking for. The portal in front of me now feels so welcoming as if it's telling me 'go in and you're home.'

I came back to Mrs. Tasha's house. She's sleeping. I erased her memories about me but still made a note for her 'Thank You' and left it on her side table before leaving and coming back to the portal. I know it's a bit unfair to just leave Mrs. Tasha alone just like that after she took me and looked after me for 6 years but… for the sake of her and the balance of this world―

"I'm taking off."
