Chapter 42 - 42- Stephen Tells

Stephen listened to the Malkhan man's detailed narration. Sometime he said something to the man. Then at last he cleared his throat.

The Inspector said, "We are already all-ears. Do tell us." Other two constables were also akin to listen to Stephen. Stephen started, "Today, before midday, around ten o' clock, two teenagers – one girl and one boy, appeared on the Malkhan hill. The boy was coming in front of the girl as if guiding her, who was carrying a backpack. On reaching the brink of the village the girl ordered the boy something. Surprisingly enough, the fair boy knew Malkhan language – though not that polished – raw and rough, but understandable. He declared that they had come for getting some information. So they needed some elderly men of the village. As only seven elderly men were available there, no woman was there, those seven elderly men including the this man inside the police station sat inside a cottage nearby. Veronica said something to the boy and the boy would translate them into Malkhan language and ask to the elderly men sitting inside the cottage. At first the questions were upon their life style and culture. Then all of a sudden Veronica got a photo of a mustached man and asked through the boy if they knew him. Then the girl told something to the boy. The boy faced this old man here and told him that the mustached man in the photo had seduced his wife successfully. – Malkhans are very simple and generally peace-loving people. But one thing they can never tolerate, that is, if someone tries seducing their wives or tease about their wives. Normally they are not violent. But if someone seduces their wives or tease about their wives they can even kill their fathers."

Inspector Robert said, "Do you think, the boy had intentionally said so?"

Stephen said, "I don't know sir. But I don't think that boy would say such a horrible thing. He is just a teen ager. I think perhaps he does not know very clearly about the Malkhan's culture. He merely knows the unpolished version of Malkahan language. That is it…"

Inspector Robert said, "It could be a case of slip of tongue. What exactly the boy said in Malkhan language?"

"E nisua loka ta tuma gaon ku asithila…"

"What does it mean?"

"This mustached man copulated with your wife."

Inspector Robert took some time. Then he said, "If I am not mistaken, you have used eight Malkhan words in that sentence, right?"

Stephen nodded his head and said, "You are a genius sir."

"Oh, flattery is totally unnecessary Stephen. I will ask you something, can you do it for me?"

"Yes sir."

"Think of homophones of these eight words and see if we alter any of the eight words with those homophones, does it make any sense."

Stephen looked confused. Inspector Robert said, "Don't be confused my man. Look, I think the boy had distorted any of the eight words. Find the correct word and the Malkahan sentence you said may mean something respectable…"

Stephen took sometime. Then he said, "Eureka sir. E nisua loka ta tuma goan ki asithila. It means: Do you know the mustached man."

Inspector Robert said, "See, the boy had distorted a couple of words and ultimately the meaning of the sentence changed, then the old man here got angry and tried killing the boy and the girl… I knew a talented and wise boy would not risk his own life in such a foolish manner. Get me the boy and the girl…"
