Annalise could hear a beeping sound from the distance and the distinct hum of background voices. Her eyes were shut against any view and she wondered where she was.
Slowly, the consciousness of her surroundings heightened, and the voices became louder, taking a coherent form.
"What if he gets to know she got injured because of Laura? How will we get out of it?" She heard a voice ask. Her head was still too heavy for her to figure out whose it was.
"And who's going to tell him?" A snarky female voice asked. "He pays us to take care of her and we've done so for the last twenty-one years. A small fall isn't our fault, right?"
"I feel terrible," The man said in a small voice. It almost went unheard.
"Well, suck those feelings in and get yourself in check, and if not for anything, for our daughter's sake!"
