Susan sighed helplessly: "No one asked for marriage. Those things are probably nothing to rich people. And don't always go to Mrs. McAfee's store. By the way, have you eaten anything? Are you hungry?"
"But I don't think even rich people would just lend people something that valuable." Ella muttered but was still distracted by the food, "I'm starving."
Susan went to look at the fireplace and thought about reheating the morning beet soup and adding some bread to make it work.
She had only recently begun to take on some sewing work, and the money she earned had barely enough to buy some bread. It was still a long way off to purchasing meat for Ella and her two brothers.
Susan ignored her mother, and if the woman were hungry, she would come to find food herself. Not to mention that, even if Susan took the initiative to talk to her, she would not respond to her.
While Susan was busy at the pot, Ella was still rambling about men proposing and which girl had just gotten engaged.
