The atmosphere in the car was degrees away from what it had been two hours ago when Alex and Vanessa set out in search of Buddy's owner.
It hadn't always been homely between them, as there was never a shortage of bickering and name calling, but for a short while Vanessa felt something had been different.
From the moment they had dropped Sophia at school to few moments ago when they had shared those flyers, there had been some silent truce and reasonable change in their communication, and that had awkwardly felt good. But seeing the quick revert in Alex's demeanor, Vanessa couldn't help but wonder what had suddenly changed.
She shot Alex a side glance as she tried to figure out if she had said or done something, but despite the intent rack of her mind, she couldn't find anything.
She inwardly sighed seeing the taut look on his face, and his firm hold on the wheel.
Something was wrong, she could tell.
