Throughout the rest of the day, Nick kept receiving worshipping gaze from everyone even the female coworkers who thought that he was a little too cold came looking for him with admiration filled gazes as they kept chattering after surrounding him.
" Nicolas, did you really save a young girl on the day of gang war?"
" I heard that he had to fight a goon to save that girl,"
" There was even a gun involved!"
" I heard it too, apparently Mr Newman snatched the gun from the goon and chased him away!"
" Bet those mafia men were taught a good lesson not to look down on a common netizen."
By the evening, when it was time to get off work, the rumour seemed to have gotten even wilder and Nick seemed to have fought with the boss of those goons, won the fight and even made those goons go on their knees and call him 'boss', Nick was fairly certain that by tomorrow he will become a brave warrior who used a scale to defeat the Devil King!
As he slid into his car, Nick banged his head on the steering wheel in exasperation, it was a good thing that tomorrow was Sunday and he would be able to get a break from these people who kept idolising him, maybe by Monday they would forget about everything and this matter will simmer down a little. However, as he thought about the culprit behind this whole fuss, Nick's face couldn't help but twist in fury.
" Mother!" as soon as he reached home, Nick didn't even take his tie off and just barged inside the living cum kitchen room and strode towards his mother who was frying some salmon croquettes. Ooh, it smelled great —- no wait, this wasn't the time to be won over by some croquettes! " Mother, why did you tell everyone, that I saved that girl? Did you really have to do that?"
Mrs Newman frowned as she turned off the stove after taking out the rest of the croquettes. " Why? What's wrong with it? You were the one who saved that girl, didn't you? Her brother told me, and he even thanked us."
Nick's face turned red with embarrassment, it wasn't that the girl's brother wanted to thank them but it was his mother who went on and on, telling him, just how brave he was and how he couldn't leave anyone who was wronged behind.
Even now Nick hasn't forgotten the look of utter disbelief on the face of that girl's brother, he was looking at him like he was trying to figure out how spaceships worked! But maybe it was because he too was a man, that's why the blonde beauty's brother simply went along with his mother and didn't say a word, he even thanked him for saving his sister, thereby saving his male ego from getting bruised in front of the doctor and nurses.
This was seriously humiliating… the girl saved him and her brother saved his self-respect.
" And what's wrong with me telling everyone about the good thing you did? My son has done something so good, saving a girl's life when there were goons involved, of course, you should be praised by everyone. In fact, I say that for your brave deed, you should be awarded by the president! Ah, I can't wait, if your brave deed gets a bit more popular then maybe I will be able to see you standing next to the president——"
"MUM IT WASN'T ME WHO SAVED THE GIRL BUT SHE WAS THE ONE WHO SAVED ME!" Nick couldn't listen to his mother's delusional fantasies anymore, standing next to the president? If she was talking about standing next to the president of cowardly cats then sure he will be the first in line with no competitor whatsoever!
As he expected his mother paused and then turned around stiffly, her hands still holding the bowl of salad that she was carrying. " What did you say? Say that again?"
Saying it once was enough but saying it another time? Nick felt like he was going to be sucked into a hole full of embarrassment. With a voice that was even softer than a baby, he relayed whatever happened that day. " And then she picked me up in a princess carry and rushed to a safe zone."
Clang!
Two clangs reverberated in the house one was obviously because his mother dropped the bowl of salad and the other was his father who just returned home after spending his entire day fishing, he seemed to have heard what Nick said and then dropped the bucket filled with fishes. The bucket was filled with water and thus, the fishes were still alive —— so, after his father dropped the bucket those fishes started to flop on the floor.
Reeling back, His father muttered, " My son….My son was princess carried by a girl! No!!!" He covered his face and cried while shaking his head. " If others found out about this, then how am I going to raise my head?"
" Honey! Calm down!"
" My son! My son is actually worse than a girl!"
" Honey!"
" My son!"
Nick watched his parents making a scene and when he looked up, Romi was standing in the middle of the stairs with an expression that was full of disgust. " Brother, you are so lame!"
" You are so lame, you are the lamest of all!" as Derren watched Vanessa walk like a macho wrestler in the flowery sundress with her hair tied in a ponytail, he couldn't help but comment from the sidelines. " You sure you are trying to get him enticed and not trying to challenge him to a fight?"
" At least, I learned to walk in heels!" snapped Vanessa as she raised her hand and showed a victory sign with a grin, " I think we will be alright with this."
Derren looked at her hunched shoulders, shaking legs and her manly posture. " No we, sure as hell won't. But after your performance, I will say just let this get over with."
