Chereads / When We Were Married / Chapter 38 - CHAPTER 38

Chapter 38 - CHAPTER 38

I was laying on my bed while I wait for myself to fall asleep and let the weekend finish so I could have some fun at work the next day. I thought sleeping tonight would be easy for me but after a few minutes of trying to get myself to sleep, someone knocked on my door.

I had just finished eating dinner so I wondered who it was and why would that person knock on my door at this time. I immediately went out of my bed and went to the door and opened it. It was Ali. "What's up?" I asked him as I open the door wider so he could enter.

"Were you sleeping already?" he asked me as he walk into my room. He noticed that my lights were already turned off and I forgot to open them before opening the door.

"Almost," I answered him and closed the door, and switched on the lights. "So, why are you here?" I asked him as I lean on my table and put my arms in a cross in front of me. He was sitting on the edge of my bed and is barely looking at me. "Are you now ready to tell me what happened?" I asked him pertaining about the conversation we had the last time and he said he cannot tell me something yet.

"No," he answered. I was quite shocked because I thought he was really going to say it right now. "I just want to talk with you," he added.

Right now? It's 11 pm and he just wants to talk to me? "About what?" I asked but he didn't even answer me and just kept staring at the corner of my room and acted as if I wasn't there. "You know what? You were acting very weird lately," I couldn't help but point it out to him.

"What do you mean?" he asked me though I knew myself that he knows exactly what I was talking about. I put my hands on my side as I look at him and gave him a questioning look.

"What is it that you can't say to me?' I asked him, "You've been keeping it for weeks now and the way you act in front of me makes me feel curiosity grow stronger. Why can't you just tell me about it?"

"I told you to forget about it because I can't tell you about it yet," he said.

"You shouldn't have told me that you were going to tell me about it later if you didn't want me to think about it," I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms again. "You should've just lied instead of telling me that something was up because you know me, I am the type of person who thinks about everything," I told him.

"Yeah, I know you so I cannot tell you about it yet," he replied using the same tone I was using and it's starting to make me feel like this conversation will lead us to a fight.

"But you told me something was up already, why not just tell me about it?' I told him. His reason has no use because I am already thinking about it anyway.

"I don't even know if I should tell you this or just keep things this way," he murmured but I heard it.

"What do you mean? You told me something was up already. Just tell me,"

"It's going to be hard for you to process this," he sighed.

Now I am starting to get annoyed. "And how did you know?" I asked him sarcastically.

He looked back at me with strange eyes. "Because it was very hard for me,"

What he said made me stop. he's a stronger person than me. He knows that and after having a hard time because of it, he didn't want to tell me because he knew me too well. he knew that I was weak.

What he just said just made me become curious about it even more. I don't know what it was all about. I have no idea what it was related to and what he just said made me have an idea of how huge it is. How much it would affect me and now that he said he had a hard time dealing with it made me imagine myself crying because of it.

I put my mouth shut after what he said and decided to just not force him to tell me again. "I'll tell you when things go better," he said.

Now that I think about it, people tend to keep things from me because they knew how much something is going to affect me. Zach did the same thing too and look what had happened. Was it all because of the people who chose not to tell me about it or was it me because I was too weak to be told about it?

"Just promise me that you ain't going to make it a huge problem for yourself," he said as he stand up from the edge of the bed he was sitting onto. "I don't want to see you getting depressed before I could even tell you about it," he said as he walked toward me. When he got in front of me, he raised his hand and put it on my head, 'You tend to think too much,"

He left the room after saying goodnight and I was left alone and didn't move an inch. It took me a few minutes to realize that I was starting to think about it again. And that is what Ali didn't want to happen.

I breathe heavily when I felt myself getting anxious. I let myself breathe that way until I calmed myself down and went to bed right away and forced myself to sleep.

The next day, I met Ali in the kitchen before I went to work. We don't eat together in the mornings and this was actually the first time that I have seen him in the kitchen before he goes to work.

To follow what he wanted me to do, I kept myself from mentioning it again so I can assure him that I was fine. I don't want him to worry more since he had already told me that he was having a hard time dealing with it and I don't want to put myself on his shoulders as a burden because I know it was already hard for him.

We had a normal conversation without mentioning even the smallest thing about what he was keeping himself from telling me. "You moved your baby's urn?" he asked me.

"Yeah," I answered without looking at him.

"You should've told me. We could've done it together,"

"No, it's fine, I know you were busy at work,"

"You've done it yourself?" he asked and I nodded. "Does Zach know about it?" I didn't expect him to mention his name, so I looked up to him.

"Y-yes," I said, "I sent him the baby's name," I told him reluctantly. I don't know if telling him this is necessary.

"What did you name her?' he asked. I am glad that he asked about the name and didn't ask why I told Zach about it even though it was too late. Now that I think about it, I look like I was just coming to him because I wanted to build another connection with him.

"Everleigh," I answered him shortly.

"What did he think about it?"

"He liked it," I said. I don't know why I am suddenly feeling comfortable talking about it.

After eating breakfast with Ali, he volunteered on taking me to the building. I thought that he doesn't usually do this so I agreed with him and he drove me to the building.

The conversation in the car was normal. Of course, we tried getting that topic away while we were together and we reached the building without talking about it which made me very thankful. "Thanks for driving me here," I said as I take my seatbelt off.

I looked at him wondering why he wasn't answering, but then I caught him staring at the huge building. "Your ex-husband is wealthy," he said.

"Stop calling him that," I told him,

"Alright," he said and finally looked at me, "Take care,"

"Thanks," I said and left his car.

The entrance was fully renovated. It doesn't look like it got through that kind of situation anymore and what I liked about it right now is that it has a larger space for people to get in simultaneously. I got in with a bunch of bodyguards going inside the office.

I got intrigued why there were so many so looked up to see who they were guarding and saw a man walking inside the circle of bodyguards.

The man looked wealthy. By just looking at his clothes and the watch on his wrist, you can already tell. Not mentioning the bodyguards swarming around him.

The next thought that I had after concluding that he was wealthy was why he had a lot of bodyguards.

He must be a very important person. I've seen my dad with bodyguards before but not with this many. I don't know how much threat he thinks is in this building for him to bring that many.

Will they even fit in a single elevator?

I continued going to the office and ignored them.

"You're late," I suddenly heard Lydia speaking behind me. She told me I was late when she was just about to enter the office herself.

"Mind you," I said and chuckled as I open the office door so we could enter together. When I entered the office, my eyes caught Leslie walking out of her office and started walking toward me.

"You, come with me," she pointed at me. My eyebrows rose up and I pointed at myself too.

"Me?" I asked her.

"Yes,"

"What for?"

"Just come with me," she said and waved her hand.

"Right now?"

"Yes, right now," she said.

I immediately went to my seat and put my bag on my chair and followed Leslie to where she was going. "Why are you suddenly bringing me with you?" I asked her and tried to walk as fast as I can so I could catch up to her because she was also walking so fast.

"I have a meeting. It's urgent," she said.

"What doe sit have to do with me?"

"You're coming with me because I forget things and I might not remember what they're going to say later,"

"Where's your secretary?" I asked her and stepped into the elevator with her,

"She was late, she got into an accident,"

"What?!"

"Yeah, this meeting is really important so I need you to be there,"

I wasn't prepared to be in a meeting but I had to come with her. Someone opened the door for us and when the meeting room's door opened, I saw people sitting at a huge and long table. There must be something that all departments have to talk about. Leslie sat beside the marketing department's head and I sat behind her. There was a chair behind the members of the meeting where I saw everybody's secretaries were sitting.

Since I was brought here to take upon Leslie's secretary's place, I sat on the chair behind her. She handed me a notepad and whispered, "Just write whatever you can," she said. "The meeting will start in a few minutes,"

I nodded and put the notepad on my lap and looked at the whole meeting room. A meeting room as huge as this exists within this building.

The long table wouldn't fit inside our office. I know that for sure because it was too big that I can see almost 30 people sitting at the table, not including the other empty seats. The whole room has dim lights. Curtains are covering the glass wall that views the other parts of the city.

There are huge screens on every side of the room so you could watch what the presenter was presenting on any screen you were comfortable in.

I didn't know what more is beautiful about this office and how it was better than others since I have never been in a company meeting room before.

I was busy looking around when my eyes met Zach's. My eyes widened for a second when I saw him looking at me when he walked inside the office.

How could I ever forget that he would be participating in this meeting?

He sat on the seat in the middle of the table in front of everyone. Of course, he's ranked the highest in this building. When he sat, he glanced back at me and all I did is to keep my eyes away from him.

"Then let's start," says someone who walked toward the other end of the table where a huge screen was also put. But before he could even say another word, I heard a loud sound coming from the door.

It made me flinch and made my heart beat fast. Everyone in the room was surprised. I looked at Zach and he just sat there and looked at who was interrupting the meeting. I looked at the door and saw familiar faces coming inside. they were bodyguards and there were a lot of them.

I saw them in thE lobby earlier. After a few moments, the expensive-looking blonde guy entered the meeting room with his hands in his pocket and stood in front of all of us, and smirked. When I looked where he was looking, I saw Zach sitting on his seat without moving an inch.

What the hell is happening?
